Even when you don't know them, it's who you know.

I just got a job as a hotel desk clerk a few days ago (yaay job).

My supervisor has basically told me that I only have the job because she personally put the application in the manager's box with a recommendation immediately after I turned it in.

Because: I was the only applicant not dressed like a hoodlum (reasonable); because my application said I'm a film major and she felt bad because her roommate was a film major and had a hard time finding a job (um, okay); and then the manager liked me because I was a psychology minor and she was a psychology major.

So, like, even not knowing these people, it was basically a "who you know".

I'm appreciative of the job, and apparently I'm the best trainee they've had in a lonnnng time, but my supervisor hasn't moved up from $8/hour in the 5 years she's worked there, and she's better than I'll ever be (and I'm at $8 right now). So there's no real room for progression, so basically it's spurred me on to find a better job.

I don't know what it'd be though.

Just wanted to share. I guess.

How badly do you need the money? Part-time I assume? If it pays the bills and you have a few bucks in your pocket and the work environment is healthy..... could be OK for now until you finish school or find something else.

If you're on good terms with your boss and they're understanding, I would 1) inform them that you're going to start looking for another job. Be sure to say that you won't give you notice until you do. 2) Ask if you can use them as a reference. Those two parts should be done with as much politeness and respect as possible. I don't think that'll be a problem for you. I'd even go as far as to explain politely to your boss that you don't see much in the way upward mobility in the job. Then again, you just started the job, so this might not be a good thing to do right off.

Basically, and I'm sure this goes without saying, stick with the job while you look for something else/better.

To be honest, though, I say stick with it at least for now. It's better than not having a job at all, which is a flipping miracle these days.

He just got the job, you can't really ask for references after a week or two of work.

And this is Doomdragon we're talking about, I'd be shocked if he'd remembered where his work was located a week later.

Woo congrats. This is a hotel? (since you said hotel desk clerk) I'm sure there is upward mobility if you look for it. Many jobs now-a-days doesn't really offer "job plan" you would have to find out what is available within the company and apply for it or at least get qualification (usually in the job training)

Ah, you're right, Jay.

In that case, Doomster, you go up to your boss, drop trou and ask, "So, how about it?"

Wait, no, hang on...

Start your blackmail folder now. In 6 months ask for a raise. When denied leave a sample on his desk. Congrats to the new shift supervisor.

Hahaha. All good suggestions.

Yeah, I actually already graduated, so that's why I'm of course going to stay there (I mean, it's not bad, it just doesn't pay the bills and there's no room to move up), but I will be looking for something a bit more long-term oriented.

Not trying to imply I don't appreciate the job, it was just interesting how it came about.

He already SAID there's no room.

Clearly, the ladderwell is the only way.

Either way, that route to a promotion would have its ups and downs.
