I know, I know. FFXI is hated towards gamers condensed into code. But I want to like it again so badly. It calls to me and I long to play it again-- I just know I shouldn't. FFXI is a closer analogy to an abusive girlfriend than it should be.

I haven't played in.... let's say about 4-6 years? Maybe more? How long ago did that come out?

I want to know what's different- If anything's improved. Are all the players on there just oldies that keep replaying, or are there any new people to share the experience with?

I assume you still can't really solo, as that would be completely different game mechanics.

I don't know why, I just really want to get back into the game, but I don't want to start paying again for something that will just hurt me again. I especially don't want to play if I won't be able to find anyone to party with, since you -cannot- do anything by yourself in that game.

As for FFXIV, I heard that everyone hates it and that SE is trying to fix it, and are actually so ashamed for it that it's currently free to play until they "fix it".

Has anyone played it, have any opinions of it? How different and "the same" as FFXI is it?

FFXI is just the same depending on what you mean.

It still takes 2+hrs to get a solid xp group. Death still = 4-5hrs of lost xp gained, even with a rez. Levels at the end game are still going to take 5-6+hrs a day for a a week to gain. Getting any storyline quests done = next to impossible without 4-5 solid friends to play with. Raids are still pretty much non-existant. Japanese players who are anti-English are still the prevailant numbers of population. Good gear still takes 1-2 weeks to get, piece by piece. All the best items are still farmed by bots for gold farmers, though they did add "Burning Circle" missions that reward likewise items, though you still need 2-3 solid friends to complete them. Rare bosses and raid zones are still controlled by the larger Japanese guilds.

FFXIV? Well I dunno how well it's been since they fired the entire original development team due to disappointing numbers/gameplay.

Doom... don't.

I know a guy who plays it all the time, but even he'd admit that it's the same old game, just with more content. It's still got the bugs (including a bug that's been there since launch for 360 players), it's still got the rampant assholes who think the game is only for Japanese people, and it's still got the farmers. It's just not a very good game.

I didn't play XI but I do have XIV. I say go with XIV (after reading all the negatives on other forums) It is free to play (for now) and you can pretty much solo with the right combo.

So I went and bought the Ultimate Collection for FFXI....

I haven't opened it yet? ^^;

Yep, pretty much.

He'll see in less than a week thankfully, it doesn't take long to figure it out.

I'm more hoping his girlfriend hurts him for it.

I get the first month free, so $10 to have learned my lesson again isn't too bad.

I got into it a few months ago, had fun for a little while with a guild I found, didn't take long to get tired of it again. There are a few changes that make it easier to solo compared to launch, but still really start to feel the grinding of it before you hit level 18 and can finally get your sub job.

I started playing again. Still level one, but if nothing else nostalgia hit hard.

I give it less than 2 weeks. (speaking from my nostalgic return to it a few years ago)

If anything I'll quit because my girlfriend is overly clingy and won't let me play without whining at me.

Kay so I pulled a friend in with me.

I also got drawn back (told ask me why because hell if I know) from the cold.
Stopped playing around 2005 deleted the char etc etc.
But a few weeks ago i just got an urge to get back in. Not forHC gaming but for the nostalgia!
Any of you guys know what jobs to play for solo and casual play?
I was tank last time pld. fun fun fun but since i wanna play solo now I wont do that again.

You'd be 10x better off playing RIFT. It has a very EQ/FFXI/WOW vibe.

Sorry, after all the years I wasted (yes wasted) on FFXI I just can't justify backing up a return to it.

I played for about two months, then fell out of it after getting Fishing up to LVL 10. I didn't do as much as I wanted, but in the entire game I grouped maybe 3 times, and getting into a group for the city quests was almost impossible.

I kind of realized that without friends in there it was pointless..
