Finally saw Lost

Wow,

I know I'm late to the party, but I just marathon-watched Lost (over the course of the past month).

Why can't television be more like this? It was well directed and well-scored. I don't even remotely understand the controversy about the finale. I can't think of a better way to wrap it up. The only thing I can think of is that people expected the flash sideways to have something to do with the "magic" of the island, when in fact it really didn't. I don't know if they felt cheated or what. Or maybe they expected a big battle royale between Jacob's team and the MIB. But that would've been really stupid. I loved how they blurred the line between hero and villain, even with the island's archetype characters. Jacob wasn't all that great, and MiB actually helped people. I don't get confusion about any of the show's points either since as good as it was, subtle it was not. They pretty much explicitly explained everything on air in plain words by the end. Sure, they didn't explain everything, but I can't think of a single thing that was important to the plot that was left out, and overexplaining would've killed it.

Anyway, 5/5. Kudos esp. to the composer for his minimalist music, especially the way it layered up in the series finale.

EDIT: If this scene didn't choke you up, you're a cold bastard:

There really wasn't that much controversy. There was a vocal minority who hated it. No matter how they ended it, there were always going to be some who hated it.

As I've said before, I loved MOST of the finale. Most especially each of th reunions.

What I didn't like, though, was those last 10 minutes or so, where we find out that the flash sideways is in fact, the afterlife. I just felt cheaped after spending so much time with these characters, only to find out they're all dead. It felt like a bad cop out. Honestly, I would have preferred the flash sideways to be an alternate reality created by Jacob as a reward for destroying Smokey. But they had to work to remember it.

Still, don't get me wrong. Aside from those last 10 or so minutes, I loved it.

Also, the creators LIED. Or at least they wound up lying. They had originally said "No, they're not dead and it's not the afterlife" in response to a bunch of questions about the show from fans after 1st season. 2nd season is when I came in and had watched a marathon of Lost season 1 after I heard a bunch of hubbub about it on the forums somewhere.

You know, I haven't been around much lately, but I only see ONE person in this thread whining and complaining and bringing everything down. You're entitled to your opinion (no matter how wrong it is), just don't expect everyone to go, "Aww that's so sweet."

I liked it. It had some plot holes. I could write down ten right now. But none of them are "MAJOR" (emphasis yours). None of them make the story fall apart. None of them really matter. Guess what. Every major story ever has plot holes. Everything fiction I've ever written has plot holes. Everything I've ever loved has plot holes. So. What. Star Trek is full of them to the point that they have to continually write themselves out of them (and I like it nonetheless). The fact of the matter is it was a beautiful character driven story. The show was about the characters, and the sci-fi mystery was the setting. If you don't like character stories, you shouldn't be watching Abrams in the first place. That's his schtick. And, no, I'm not saying you said that--I'm making a point. (Jeez, I hardly go to forums anymore, partly because "Show me where I said that" is the dickest defense ever. You would never say that in real life when someone is clearly making a point.) The directors were awesome. The show went places tv hadn't really gone before (non-caucasian cast members who weren't cardboard cutouts, realistic ethnicities, stereotype busting, strong females who weren't bitches, constant cast rotation, flawed characters (hell, this was the POINT OF THE SHOW), etc.) Oh, and my personal favorite---fuzzy edged good guys and bad guys. Like I said up there, even the MiB wasn't all bad, and Jacob could be a douche--which was AWESOME.

Now, I'm getting admittedly defensive. There were things that I didn't like. I really hated Juliet's "The Face". I really want to know more about the temple Others. I want to know what happened to Ben when Richard saved his life. Why and how did he "lose his innocence"? Why did Juliet say "It worked." (though that was probably just in progress writing gone bad). Why didn't Jack seem to have Jacob's power even though Jacob passed it on to him?

Also, I should add that as much as I wanted to know more about certain things on the Island, I'm really, really, really, really, really, really glad the writers didn't explain everything (and they explained A LOT very explicitly by the end as I said above). If they did, it would've been corny, and they would've been guilty of the dreaded infodump that plagues modern writing.

Also, you know who was guilty of plot holes, and embraced it? Tolkein, Nerd God. He made literary love to them. If you read his letters, he would actually incorporate his goofs intentionally into the story. As he said, he wouldn't say, "Why did I write that?". Rather, he would ask, "Why did Frodo do that?" and answer it.

Here's a Halforums ProTip for free:

-You can be honest without being a giant asshole to someone.
-You can make jokes and tease each other without being a giant asshole.
-You can choose to not take every joke or jab in your direction as a giant insult
-You can choose to deal with getting called out for saying something dumb, we all do it, and we have all gotten called for saying something dumb. It's part of life.

So before you post in this thread (or any other) decide, am I being a giant asshole or a giant douche? If the answer is yes, then maybe grab a beer and chill a few minutes before engaging in giant asshole and giant douche behavior.
Consider this a "I don't want to have to lock this thread" post.

Your demeanor and approach to situations is what gets you trouble here, not because you've been designated some doormat role. Your demeanor and approach have likely gotten you flack in real life, and it gets you flack here, and it's not always because people are being mean to be mean (though sometimes it is, and everyone gets that to some extent)--often it's because you make a whiny show of yourself; not a great way to handle yourself in public (which this is). You also make passive-aggressive comments against others, rather than full-on aggression. You'll make more friends by just being upfront. And you need to get a handle on some of your seedier points of view. I would hope that hindsight can be 20/20 for you and you could look back on Matt's old Manbaw thread in the Hall of Fame and see something wrong with the things you said--because there are some seriously wrong things said there, by you.

Also note: Chaz has tried to help you a couple times in the past, and you threw it back in his face because, as someone said, you do have a persecution complex, believing you're the forum punching bag, everyone hates you, etc, etc. Well, Chaz has not punched you every single time, he's tried to give advice, which would be helpful if taken, but damn, he's out to get you, so it must be a trick. I'm not surprised he no longer tries.

If everyone was out to get you, you wouldn't have had Sheggy and Amy (on the latter, who of all people would be the last I'd expect to stick up for you) in one of the Games forum threads, nor would people have reported my attack post on you in the same thread to the mods, who immediately came in to defend you as well. You don't appreciate any of these people--you just focus on the negative. Not to mention, a lot of the people in these Lost threads haven't attacked you; they've just disagreed with you. That's not an attack. And it's likely they're not disagreeing just to "get you", it's probably because they have a different opinion than you. They're allowed to have those.

I'll briefly reply to Mav: Not everyone on this forum is like that. For that matter, cliques and circles? Sure, we have certain HF'ers that chat back and forth than others. That happens with any forum or, you know, real life. Might be getting a bit too personal, man, but do you have troubles with depression or a similar mental illness? I say this because some of the things you've said are clear cognitive distortions (Cognitive distortion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). There are much better ways of dealing with negative responses. Something I'm still working on myself, sometimes. There are a couple of forumites that, while they're nice guys overall, can be pretty big jerks sometimes, too, and don't know when to leaves things alone. Some of them responded in this thread. It's a matter of how you take their comments and most especially how you respond.

As far as Lost goes? Still an amazing show despite the plot-holes, some of which were unavoidable (Walt), others that might just need closer scrutiny and others that we're just going to have to accept. The finale was fantastic, aside from those last ten minutes, in my mind.

#52

I loved the last ten minutes. I loved the way they said, "Nope this has nothing whatsoever to do with the island." I mean by that point, the island was pretty much a done deal. I liked that the authors didn't try to force it in, and it made perfect sense--in the sideways flashes, the fatal flaws of the characters were resolved. The interleaving with Jack dying was poignant and perfect. One of my favorite scenes was the Ajira flight zooming overhead as he lost consciousness. Beautiful.

INCOMING RANDOM OBSERVATIONS

As far as Walt and Aaron were concerned, I kind of felt they were kids, so they weren't candidates. Although, I would've liked to know more about what was up with Walt and Locke's superpowers.

There were flaws a plenty, to be sure. I was a little disappointed in Locke's character progression. He went from cool mystery to whiny scared guy. I understand where they were going, but I wasn't a huge fan. I liked Locke the way he was. The early dialogue was a little formulaic, and could almost be made into a drinking game. "Point." "Counterpoint." STARE INTENSELY. Insert inappropriate laugh-headshake combo from Jack. With the exceptions of Rose, Bernard, and Hurley, the plane apparently only carried Pretty People. Even Locke is attractive and built for his age.

I WANT Frank Lapidus's beard. Did anyone else keep hearing his name as LaPenis at first? I could've sworn that's what they were saying.

I loved the humor scenes. And the dynamite. Two people chunkified and played for laughs (esp. Arzt).

The casting director deserves a fruit basket for Michael Emerson. Holy crap was that guy creepy.

It took me a while to place it, but Hurley was totally the viewer avatar. He said the things a viewer would say. He called attention when a plot point was similar to something from another show or movie. He pointed out when things were stupid.

It sure seems like a lot of people incorrectly interpret the finale as "they all died in the crash". I mean Christian says in plain english that they were just gathering there to meet each other because they had such a profound effect on one another in life. I think some people really wanted the island=afterlife interpretation to be true, and they took the afterlife stuff as confirmation. I don't think some fans can handle that the sideways flash is completely divorced from the island (other than the events there being the catalyst that made them seek each other out in the afterlife). Christian says "now has no meaning here, not everyone died at the same time". Not you, Matt, but it almost seems like the strip's author is interpreting the finale that way.
