After the video, the article goes on to explain that they think one of the main reasons Firefly failed is the intro. At first I was outraged cause I LOVE that intro... but stepping back a bit from my Firefly fanboyness, I realize they have a point. How long did that intro take for it to grow on me? 3 episodes? 5?
I've turned lots of people into Firefly fans, and they all have one thing in common... they all hated the intro at first. Then they grew to love it, yes, but at FIRST....
And that's the problem right there. The average TV viewer isn't patient enough, and that intro IS on the boring-flip-the-channel-away spectrum before it grows on you.
Whaddya think?

I tivo shows I want to see and skip the intro anyway.

It's definitely better.

LOL, fantastic.

That intro is kinda Red-Dwarf-ish. Which means it's rad-ass.

Yeah that intro kept me from watching the show for awhile. I am not a fan of westerns, which it looked like judging from the intro, so it took all the praise heaped onto it from this forum for me to finally give it a decent chance. Loved the show and even have the intro in one of my playlists now. I think the song would of worked for an ending and a different intro to try and draw people in.

THe original credits are great too, they do take some time to start to like, just like the show actually. For whatever reason, that show just takes time to get into for pretty much everyone.

The intro takes a while, sure... but the show!? I disagree, it wins you over the INSTANT Mal kicks the guy into the turbine.

Hailey Knight
Meh.
I always liked the Firefly intro. This is just cheese, and it's too long.
And they showed Mal kicking that guy into the engine, which is the one thing they should never - EVER - show in a promo! That's one of the best unexpected things I've ever seen in either movies or TV.

You do realize it's made for people who are already fans, right?
As for the show...I still think that intro song is lame as balls. The show itself...it took a while for me to get into. Partially because of the annoying rabid fanbase and partially because its a show where the writing is in the characters, and it really gets cooking once you get the know the characters. I think the one episode that finally hooked me was "Jaynestown", and the one that cemented this show as one of my all-time favorites is "Out of Gas". My god, the execution on that episode. Awesome.

Also, its a funny intro. And the grumpy reactions are funny too.

Firefly has a little bit of everything for everyone - if you don't like what's there, be patient. They'll get to you. Witty quipping is always a sure-fire way to get my interest.
I preferred the original intro, but I got a laugh at the sheer 80's cheese of this. NOSTALGIA'D. *chuckles*
Normally, rabid fanbases deter me. It's what's prevented me from getting into Naruto, for example.

Sadly it's the same thing that happened with me to Arrested Development. When people are constantly shoving it down my throat, it just turns me off. Firefly had the worst rabid fanbase I've seen with a show I've been curious about, though. My godddd, the internet.
Which just reinforces the fandom that turned me off from the series to begin with. I wish whoever did this did more intro send-ups.

I am so angry about this credits sequence, it is worse than hitler

hitler was a pretty bad man

I laughed my ass off at the 1986 version of the intro. I can't believe how many people, friends of mine included who are fans of the show, saw absolutely no humour in it.

original title sequence. crap
80's send up. hilarious crap.

The original intro was perfectly fine. If you couldn't watch the show because the intro wasn't bad ass enough for you generally suck a dick. This goes for any other shows.
I think one of the main reasons the humor fails is the intro it got in this thread. While it is mentioned as an 80's intro on IO9, Calleja didn't do that here. I went expecting an intro that would fit a more modern series. This isn't "Credit Sequence [Firefly] Deserved!" because Firefly wasn't an 80's show, it would never have been what it was if it were made in the 80's. This is a credit sequence for a different series, not something to sell an audience on what actually exists.

umm.... that's the joke, dude.

I think "Hilarious Version of Firefly Intro" would have turned a better outcome.

Yeah, Calleja fails again. I blame him.

Let's talk about the best intro credits in TV history:
Cheers
Dexter
True Blood
Sanford & Son
All in the Family

Never seen True Blood, but the rest of those are good.

Yeah?
WELL YOU CAN ALL GO MAKE YOUR OWN THREADS, THEN, IF YOU'RE SO GOOD AT IT!!
Late to the party, but I have to side with the "better intro would have made this actually funny."
I'm still a little confused as to whether the people saying they didn't like the intro at first are playing into the joke or serious. That was what originally threw me, because I always thought the intro was awesome and a bunch of people were saying it was an "acquired taste" with fairly uniform seriousness.

I liked the mock 80s intro a lot. My biggest beef is that they cut Simon out of it. I think they could have shaved a couple seconds off of Jayne's sequence and maybe Zoe's or Kaylee's in order to fit him in.

The first time I saw the Dexter intro I loved it. Times after that, not so much.
As for other intros I really like...well, I think Joan Jett is great for Freaks and Geeks, songwise. And, I really, really, really like the Mad Men song and intro.

The only reason anyone gave a shit about this show was it's intro
It's also 90% of the inspiration for the guys who made the joke Firefly intro.
