It's a really good game but there are a few mods you're definitely going to want with it.
http://www.tolkienacrossthewater.com/forum/index.php?topic=977.0 - Berelinde is a good friend of mine; she's actually GMing our Dragon Age pen & paper campaign. She's played through DA:O and DA2 many times. This is her list of recommended mods. Some of them you'll want to check the compatibility with before installing, which is generally just good practice whenever using mods.
I personally got a lot of use out of lock bash one - it let me avoid using "Mary Sue With Orlesian Accent" in favor of characters I liked better.

Go here to get the Stone Prisoner DLC for free too --> https://social.bioware.com/page/da1-dlc
For some reason they are not offering that one for free on the origin launcher.

Origin is really weird about DLC. I had to go in and manually tell it to download and install everything for Mass Effect 3, most of which was free updates to the multiplayer.

Yeah, I had to install all the free DLC from the Bioware site for DA manually. The in-game downloads is not working for me. Nothing is listed on available downloads. Not sure if it's because it's not supported anymore because the Origin launcher is suppose to do all that (even though they don't offer that DLC for free on Origin) or if it can be tinkered with to get it working but I decided not to bother and just installed the extras manually. They are now listed as installed addons and hopefully they will work correctly.
