I am not sure If I understand the "mobility rig", so this guy is a cyborg? He is wearing some sort of armor? Or is a remote controlled robot???

there is a human there (heartbeat) who is not doing any physical activity. it seems from the use of the term "neural net" that the human is inside a sentient robot, perhaps because of some paralyzing injury (supported by "mobility suit") or that he is performing some cursory role, like moral intervention (presumably one couldn't just entrust policing to an emotionless robot) or simply additional computation power.

and now i am going to judge you for being a furry/furry sympathiser. shame on you.

My sci-fi best guess comes down to one of two things:

-The suit is an empty shell, animated by a remote operator who is using an intercom and a device to translate thoughts/nerve impulses onto that construct. The sound of the heartbeat is unintentional and is being carried over this intercom system.

-The suit really is a suit with a person in it, but this person has some sort of condition (double amputee - no legs/no stinky feet, is a shellperson, etc) requiring this enhancement suit in order to properly fulfill job requirements/interact with society at large.

It's hard not to sympathize with furries/furry sympathizers. They're so cute and cuddly...

For some reason, when I read all this.. the first thing that came to mind was this:

http://www.halforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=282286&postcount=35

To anyone still curious to know how LOLbat can be buttle and Rex Rowler at same time, without sleeping, here is something I figured out:
Is a goddam Comedy Webcomic, stop trying to make sense of it, dorks
Also, I liked today comic, but is was the only one the whole week.
Sure, it's not a direct relation, but it seems to hold up.

Dude, the Brent Sienna rule, it is only furry if they have breasts, Florance doesn't.

similar thoughts as well, also, I knew that the fact that he never took off his helmet was to mean something.

despite the comedy aspect, Freefall is more sci-fi and has a single and continuous storyline, many many things have a huge importance later and the chief of police being a "half-robot" or similar is sure to have a major impact in the robotic rebelion.

It still doesn't change the argument.

Kurtz does try to stay within a certain amount of continuity. Sure, it's a comedy webcomic vs a more sci fi comic. But it doesn't change that you poke fun at people trying to explain that hole in continuity, while questioning it in another webcomic.

"hole in continuity"? I am not poiting out any hole, I was curious to know what "human using mobility rig" means, I first assumed it was a limitation in my english, but it seems that the guy just din't explained on purpose (very common in this comic), there is not continuity problem here.

Also, I still poke fun of the guys that think that is valid to argue lolbat continuity ;)

That's good, because I still poke fun for the guys that think it's valid to argue continuity in any webcomic.

Also as a long time Freefall fan, Mark does tend to leave in detailed devices and concepts with just the usual amount of explanation as you would expect for someone living at the time. Just as now you wouldn't show someone your new PC and go into a highly detailed explanation of silicon doping or the TCP/IP process as would be needed for someone from the 1800's to be overwhelmed with what's going on.

If there's more details needed for clarity, Sam or Heelix will be sure to ask, perhaps Winston on a vid call, or maybe have a nice chat with Sawtooth on the way to orbit. I'm pretty certain more details will be coming out, since it's obvious the policeman is not an AI directly since he had the initiative to tell Florence about the account requirements for AI and had a "shortcut" solution.

The Freefall forums also have a wide variety of geek including non-techy types that ask what's going on a lot, and details and speculation run rampant in there.

Are you asuming that I am critizing the guy work? I just din't knew/understood what she meant and thougth someone would. What is so bad about it?

I didn't think you were criticizing, just trying to say what I've seen from the comic story lines and suggest where you could get more information. The Freefall forum was the first one I ever joined back in ...lordy was it that long ago...

A long time ago.

I don't join every forum of every webcomic that I read, remembering each username and password would likely drive me (more) mad.

And I guessed that we have a quite a number of members that are fans (like you) or that are geeky enough to answer. =P

yeah but a writer with any modicum of fucking talent works this into their story because their job is to create immersion. in fucking blade runner it was explained RELATIVELY QUICKLY what a fucking replicant was but I GUESS phillip k dick just isn't up to the standard of the people who draw dog porn on the internet.

agree with the immersion bit, disagre with the "dog porn" comment.

I always found the story quite well done because of this, I always despised the hackneyed "Here's how to use an elevatortron" BS.

I know, I also hate blalant expospeak, but there is balance about stuff. I mean, how many centuries in the future are they? with enough time they could likely speak a variation of english that we would have problems understand, or at least have new slangs and words with different meanings, hell, with enough time another language could have been born, yet the Author decided to use plain old english, because otherwise his audience wouldn't enjoy it.

After perusing the strip a bit, another possibility could be that the author just wants to lend more credence to the 'robots become LIVING BEINGS once they turn eighteen.'
