Gentlemans, give me music!

Singularity.EXE

It has come to my attention that my iPod is sorely lacking in the hard rock department. I'll be honest when I say that I have very, very limited knowledge of modern or classic rock bands, but still immensely enjoy the genre. So I ask you gentlemen, submit unto me your favorite songs so that I can load my iPod with awesomeness!

Actually, I meant to include that one, but missed it in my long list of songs. I've probably left a few others out by accident as well.

I did compile this list while at work.

i'm not gonna pass judgement on coldplay or motley crue but i am gonna say this, in a thread where a guy asks for hard rock motley crue is a much better suggestion.

Anyone who doesn't know Smoke on the Water shouldn't be ALLOWED to listen to classic rock.

Heh, well, that is true. I kinda missed the hard rock bit there. Just saw the rock and got to work. Though, he does also mention that he wants Classic and Modern hard rock. Not sure if Motley Crue qualifies for classic just yet. I also omitted bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana for the same reason. I meant to leave Metallica off as well for the same reason, but I put it on there and didn't think about that until just now. Don't feel like editing the list now.

Philosopher B.

Wikipedia tells me I apparently don't listen to much 'hard rock'. 'Bout the only bands I can think of that haven't been mentioned already are Blue Oyster Cult, Rainbow and Elf (both of which had Dio in them).

Edit: Does ZZ Top count. Because Eliminator is one of the most badass albums of all time.

#25

Mr_Chaz

Classic rock? Then my current favourite suggestions would be Free and Bad Company. Possibly because I have a slight man crush on Paul Rodgers' vocals.

Everyone knows 'Smoke on the Water', so that point is moot. I might say that it is people who only have 'Smoke on the Water' and no other 'Purple songs who shouldn't be allowed to listen to classic rock. 'Smoke on the Water' is like 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Stairway to Heaven', 'Sweet Home Alabama' and 'Hotel California' - a great song that is overplayed to the detriment of the rest of the artist's catalogue.

That said, 'Machine Head' is a good Deep Purple album to start on. You get 'Smoke on the Water', but also 'Highway Star', 'Space Truckin'', 'Lazy' and others. Deep Purple are pretty hard rockers, and probably paved the way for the advent of Metal and bands such as Black Sabbath and Motorhead.

For classic rock, I'd go for bands like The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, the Grateful Dead, (Peter Green era) Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, Cream/Derek & the Dominos (and other Clapton vehicles... check out Clapton with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers), the Allman Brothers, Queen, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, etc.

#27

Actually, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath both formed around 1968-70.[/nitpick]

#28

Gill Kaiser

Sure, but both bands changed significantly during their lifetimes, so who can say?

Incidentally, I can't believe I missed out Thin Lizzy in my previous post, and even after I went and saw Phil Lynott's statue in Dublin a few months ago. That's another seriously underrated band.

Diamonds and Guns

The Urge

I love The Urge. Jump Right In was pretty good too, has Nick Hexum from 311. I lost the album I had, sadly. :(

Also in the vein of Rammstein:
