I'm trying to save a little money and retain the functionality of the Tivo I have (Tivo 3 HD with dual tuner) and avoid the monthly subscription.. to this end I've so far found only one DVR worth mentioning so far, though my quest to find a better DVR will continue..
This DVR got good ratings at Walmart.com : Walmart.com: Magnavox MDR-513H/F7 320GB DVR and DVD Recorder: DVD & Blu-ray Players
the hard drive is actually a little sparse for recording quality (I want to move up to 720p or better, it's currently recording at 480p and some channels it looks like shit).. but I'm sure I can update that with a 750 or 1tb drive.. plus side is the DVD can be upgraded as well.
