I've never seen the Steve Martin version, but I have seen the original japanese version. We should swap!

I think the original is on Hulu Plus. I was amazed at how different it is to the rest of the franchise. Very deserving of the Horror label.

You really don't need to see that version.

I thought it was funny that even though they brought Raymond Burr back for Godzilla 1985, they don't mention his character's name as Steve Martin thanks to the comedian's rise to popularity during the time between movies.

Man, I loved Godzilla 1985 when I saw it when I was, like, 8. I wonder if it's held up well at all.

Kati and I went to see this at an Art Institute showing, it was a surprise. When you watch the original picture, it's immediately apparent that this is not some kind of Japanese rubber-monster kaiju film. There is suspense, social commentary, environmental message, etc. Also we could not get the theme song out of our heads for days.
