Going to Quit Smoking Cigarettes.... Moving to Electronic.

Anyone know or experience these? I've been doing my homework for a good month or so now and am finally going to put the investment into it.

I enjoy smoking. The entire stigma of it. The feel, the taste, the effect, the social aspect, everything. I love it. What I don't love is having to go outside to enjoy it, the constant downward looks from some friends and family, the "kiss avoidance" after having one, the smell complaints etc.

So I've found, so far, that this is the best way to please both parties. The patch/gum/etc do not please me, and just "cutting back" does not please them. So opinions?

A friend of mine uses those, he is a basically a promoter of them. We get a lot of people coming to our table to find out what he's smoking. As much as he used to smoke, he actually saved a little money over normal cigarettes.

Mt friend LOVES them. The cool part about electronic is that you can get different FLAVOR and even custom them (if you have the right cartridge and such) it is pretty awesome.
It is a like a portable hooka

Then you understand that the electronic cigarette may still get you banned to smoke outside (they either just got banned from planes or will be soon), there is still an unpleasant odor that some people report, and there are no studies to support that it is any better or safer than a regular cigarette and may in fact have other dangerous chemicals that you are inhaling.

I think if I was going to "quit" I would just do it instead of take up another habit.

Jiarn

The cigarette I'm aiming at, is an odorless water vapor so no outdoors for me. There are no studies, true, but there are studies about what will happen if I continue with regular cigarettes.

So far in the 7 years of testing, these have come out with no adverse side effects so, while it's not better than quitting, it's better than continuing the way I am.

Quitters never win!
I recently started up again begin time after a 7 year 'hiatus' from smoking. interesting device, so good luck with it!

Really? cause the "smoke" is actually water vapor that you blow out. you can smell the actual cigarette smoke, but can't smell the water vapor unless you are in kissing range.

Maybe it depends on the brand or what you put in it. I haven't experienced this myself or been around a person who was "smoking" one of these. However, our local news station just did a report on electronic cigarettes . Several people they interviewed claimed you could still smell something unpleasant when the user exhaled.

I've noticed a mild ozone odor, with a hint of what ever flavor is in the machine, when my friend uses his.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... those are also the same people that feign death around regular smokers.

Thanks for the advice on this Tinwhistler I decided to go with the

Cause I'm vain like that. Oh and they have excellent reviews since their recent upgrades.

I haven't been around someone that uses e-cigs, but I do get mild asthma attacks when I'm around someone who smokes, up to about 10 minutes after they've stopped and used a breath mint. Not deadly, but certainly very unpleasant.

I don't imagine it's the nicotine that causes the reaction, and I've certainly been around enough fog machines to know that they don't cause as strong a reaction as tobacco smoke (the carrier in e-cigs is the same thing used in most fog machine fluid, or an alternative very much like it for those allergic to the usual stuff), so it's unlikely that e-cigs would cause an asthma attack, but I suppose I won't know until I meet someone who is using one.

My friends John and Ruth use those. They're definitely a lot milder than regular cigarettes - I used to come home from game night reeking of smoke, and now, nothing.

So... why not move away from them?

I'm not talking about being around a smoker's company indoors. Being allergic to smoke particles or having asthma isn't the type of person I'm talking about. I'm talking about having a cigarette outdoors and someone fake coughing as they walk by you. Some people tend to over exaggerate the effects just a little too much for me to resist an eye-roll.

I understand no one wants smoke in their face, but if you're living in a city, for example, there's worse shit in the air on a daily basis than what the asshole walking in front of you is puffing. My general philosophy on people bitching about outdoor smokers is to just get out of the way and quit bellyaching.

While I didn't quit my job to move away from my smoking coworkers, I must admit it has been nice not to have to deal with that aspect of work. The point being that you can't always move away from smokers.

Sorry if I cough when I have to walk by someone smoking. If I'm aware of it, I try to hold my breath and move around them quickly, or alter my path so as to avoid the unpleasant situation.

It is interesting that you suggest that the problem is wholly mine, and that smokers should be prevented from hearing or seeing the discomfort they cause others.

I suggest it because, as a casual smoker, I already go out of my way more often than not to prevent other people from getting a face full of smoke. In my case, if I'm standing at the corner of the building, outside away from the doorway, and someone walks past, deliberately coughing, they're going to get an "eat shit" look from me. At that point it is your own prerogative to get out of the way if the smoke really bothers you. I mean really the situation is the same as getting mad at a semi-truck for belching a wad of exhaust in your direction on the highway. It happens. Most air in populous cities isn't the cleanest to begin with.

I agree with you to an extent though, I too think smokers who light up without consideration for others are complete jackasses. I would never smoke around someone I'm working with - indoors or out.

And by casual smoker, I mean I smoke through a pack every six months. I don't really even think I qualify as a social smoker. Sometimes I need a tweak, and nicotine does the trick. Maybe that's why I get so irked about non-smoker complaints. I really don't deal with it on a daily basis enough to have it happen often.

Chibibar

Tin, can you actually smell the "smoke" after exhale? I personally can't with my friends.

#29

Jiarn

It's just flavored water vapor. My answer is no.

#30

sixpackshaker

I have a pretty good sense of smell, like I said before there is a slight ozone smell (like an overheated PC,) but there is also a hint of ethylene glycol smell (a sweet chemical smell.) But it is really faint.

I can only smell that when I am sitting shoulder to shoulder in a bar yelling at my friend over the music.

#31

makare

I have an allergy to cigarette smoke which makes my home life pretty much hell living with a clan of chain smokers. As long as the electronic ones don't interfere with my ability to breath I don't really care about smell.

That is what I figure. I'm trying to figure out how other smell the smoke ;)
To me, it is a world of difference and my friend loves it cause he can smoke indoor now in Dallas (most are non smoking) cause you don't get that 2nd hand smoke.

Thread Necromancer

Been a few(?) months since this thread was posted in. I'm dragging it up now to see how people are doing with their vapor smokes. I tried one a couple years back but could never put the thing down and eventually ended up moving back to normal cigarettes. I'm looking to get away from them again and find myself thinking about another e-cigarette.

So, how are people doing with them? Does anyone reaffirm their particular model? Has anyone found that what they were using has gone to crap and gone back to analogs? Just trying to pump for some information and get some "after a while" info.

I tried them along with my brother. We got the BLU. They were "ok".

I was back on regular cigarettes within 3 months.

I use the Joy-E. I wasn't a super heavy smoker to begin with and I prefer the cartridge tips, so that will get me through at least a whole day and the battery can last me up to 3 days.

Also, in regards to the smell, the only smell that you would get wouldn't be from exhaling, it would be from the juice being heated up on the element. That does have an ozoney smell mixed with whatever flavor you're using. My best friend has some that are almost as noxious smelling as regular cigarettes because they're so sickly sweet.

Officer_Charon

I use these:

on the rare occasions I smoke anything.

HOWEVER: in the spirit of this thread, I would honestly like people's opinions on these, because I should like to get my mom one - she's always talking about quitting, but usually only makes it a month.

If I can get her going on it, my dad is too much of a gadget nerd NOT to try one. Then again, he's a creature of habit, so who knows.

If I can get them to quit, a lot of the tension my wife feels about them being around our daughter will be gone (my wife, the rabid anti-smoker)

I had never heard of these until about two months ago, and now they're EVERYWHERE. There's even disposable ones at the gas station. I didn't realize that there hadn't actually been much research in them yet, but I highly doubt they are any worse than actual cigarettes.
