Good Country Music?

I've been thinking of taking a new look at music. I remember hearing some pretty nice country music pieces in the past - like Whiskey For My Men, Beer For My Horses - but I can't always recall their names. Country isn't a big thing hereabouts, for some strange reason ;)

So, I turn to you, friends overseas. Got any good country music for this curious music lover? Bands, singers, even specific songs?

I can't stand most country (well, aside from the obvious awesomeness of Johnny Cash), but there is just something about Jennifer Nettles' voice that compels me to listen to Sugarland:

I don't know what it is. :p

The Avett Brothers are my favorite.

A lot of modern stuff is just pop in a cowboy hat. Don't listen to it much anymore myself, but I think Patsy Cline is very good. That first song on my ukulele thread is a Patsy Cline song.

Pop or pop-rock. It weirds me out a little when I see a country music video with a rock solo in.

Yeah... not that pop or pop-rock are inherently bad, but it seems like people are trying to severely tweak the genre to try and get more people to enjoy it or something.

Oh fuck. Why didn't I think of Neil Young. Also, Bob Dylan had some terrific country stuff.

Not straight country, but there's some alt-country I've enjoyed.

^ Never heard of those artists before, they sound quite good. Also, anything with a banjo fucking rules:

I guess that's more, uh, bluegrass or whatever though. But banjos still rule!

Well, if it's Bluegrass you want, how about some Doc Watson?

Can't really look up videos right now, but I'll leave a few bands to check out. Uncle Tupelo, Whiskeytown, Chatham County Line, Old Crow Medicine Show, Gillian Welch, and Rodney Crowell...

Don't discount Hank, Cash, and Willie just cause they are popular though.
