The Goonies is a 1980's film starring Sean Astin and a variety of teens who get chased by counterfeiters through a maze created by pirates. It's a classic.

"the dad" died in 1985 shortly after filming wrapped up, so if HE'S coming, then he's coming as either a ghost or a zombie skeleton.
I believe that is one of Richard donner's assistants.

Basically you have to revert to being a kid to enjoy it. It was made back in the day when electronics (like Data's gadgets) were much more glorious because we didn't HAVE as much... wow, I sound like my dad..... it was made in an era when kids still went outside and DID something exciting, instead of sitting indoors playing games all day.

I think that's pretty much it. It's a movie that has nostalgic appeal for those who saw it at a certain age but leaves newer viewers wondering why it's such a classic. I think this puts it comfortably with other movies of the era like Adventures in Babysitting, Hiding Out, and Weird Science.

I don't think I've ever laughed as hard at a scene in a movie as I did when the dead agent kept falling on Chunk. Don't know what it was about that scene but the idea of being locked in a freezer with a dead guy that kept falling on Chunk (with open mouth) had me laughing so hard I was crying. What a fun movie. Haven't watched it in years but may need to throw it in Netflix.

I'm not one to begrudge another person's nostalgic movie choices. I'm just aware of the fact that, since I never saw it as a kid, the movie is never going to be as entertaining for me as it is for people who watched it in the 80's.

You had to be there, I guess.

When you look at the cast, a fair amount of them have gone on to be somewhat successful, all told. The older brother is Josh Brolin, whose 'Jonah Hex' is coming out next week, and was superb in 'No Country For Old Men'. Sean Astin was Sam in LOTR. Marsha Plimpton was in quite a few movies during the 80's. Corey Feldman turned into Corey Feldman. Robert Davi has been on several series (including 'The Profiler' on NBC) and many movies. Joey Pantaliano shows up all over the place, though a lot of people know him from The Sopranos and The Matrix.

Goonies was Raiders of the Lost Ark for kids. It had action, adventure, and plenty of hilarious moments. The selling point is clearly getting to see a group of outcast kids being the unlikely heroes as they find a treasure map and make it through the diabolical and mischievous traps left behind by what feels to me like the movie's prime antagonistic force: One Eyed Willie. It is a movie that is certainly not going to have the same magic if you watch it now for the first time. You might enjoy it alright, but you certainly won't be able to make any kind of connection with it.

My favorite scene is where Chunk has been captured and is being interrogated by the villains into telling them "everything", in which he immediately starts to recant every mischievous prank he has ever pulled including the infamous story of going up to the balcony of a movie theater and pretending to vomit. The genuinely pleased look on the older Fratelli brother when he puts an arm around chunk and says "You know, ma, I'm starting to like this kid" is priceless.

I think the lure of the Goonies is essentially that it portrays the type of adventure every single suburban kid dreams about having.
