Great Movies Lists: Your Picks?

In light of Roger Ebert's recent passing, I decided to go through some of Ebert's old articles and discovered this: a list of what he considered to be "great movies".

http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?category=greatmovies_fulllist

Going over the list, the thought crossed my mind of how other people would put together "great movies" lists. How would they be similar? How would they be different? That is why I would like to conduct an experiment.

What would be your "great movies" list? No specific number is necessary to hit for this. Just list the films that you consider great in some way. I'm working on my own "great movies" list at the moment, so I'll put it up later.

The Sight And Sound Poll that happens every 10 years is pretty amazing and legit. Here's the top 50: https://www.bfi.org.uk/news/50-greatest-films-all-time

Obviously, I think Ebert's is pretty great as well.

They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? http://www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1000.htm is another great list.

You said Chinatown and one or two others were perfect though, I added the couple others I thought were "perfect".

If I had to put together a manageable list of movies I think every person should be tied to chair and forced to watch before they are allowed to be a part of society it would probably go along these lines:

1) Chinatown
2) The Social Network
3) The Tree of Life
4) Jaws
5) Vertigo
6) Rear Window
7) Alien
8) The Shining
9) 2001: A Space Odyssey
10) Taxi Driver

I get like. Irrationally, really fucking upset at the people that say The Shining is bad.

Although, I'd put 2001 ahead of it. It's still just. fucking stunning filmmaking

It's disconcerting to realize how few of the movies on these lists I've seen.
Dude, don't worry about it. I consider myself a HUGE movie dork and fan and all that good stuff. I have seen a shitload of movies, and everyone on earth can find like 100+ "essential" movies from someone they've never heard of.

I guess I should have mentioned I'm not super picky about the order of those. It's kind of loosely based on which I think are best but all 10 are mind blowingly amazing so whatev.

People who think The Shining are bad are bad people.

yeah, agreed. Even though the list I posted goes from 100-84, I am not super picky from the ordering of those! although I think 100-90 is a mini-tier above anything in the 80s. But that's still just quibbling. A lot of the stuff in the 80s I didn't pop into the 90s was just me being like "I can't give that a 90-100 since it's too new!"
