Being probably my all time favorite -Western animated- shows of all time (right up there with Venture Bros) I'm ridiculously excited by this news during GTs AMA.

Tom Cruise was by far the best Western samurai

Tom Cruise isn't a Western animated show.

There was an article on Genndy's plans for this over at IGN just a few days ago. He doesn't actually have anything in development right now. It's one of those projects he'll jump on if he can get the backing, and it's not there right now.

He's also working on an animated Popeye movie.

No, you may not have those two minutes back...unless you go back in time and prevent yourself from ever clicking "play."

I took -working on it- to mean -he's working on it-.

They won't have Mako for Aku. Not sure if want.

Seemed appropriate. Mako and Genndy are in it, too.

What is the source of this original post, anyway?

I could make an alt named iamjosswhedon and say that I'm working on a new Firefly series...

I bet it ends with jack getting his shirt ripped off, then a the screen flashes with a sword sound and aku slides in two.

Genndy Tartakovsky did an ASK ME ANYTHING on Reddit where he verified his identity through his own twitter.

I hope Phil Lamarr is still Jack. If he is not Jack, I am boycotting this flick.

A show with four seasons and multiple animation awards is considered a failure?

#24

Yoshimickster

Its not so much it failed as Cartoon Network was planning a movie to end it after the Powerpuff Girls movie succeeded...which it didn't. THANKS A LOT EBERT!

13 episodes should hardly be called a series, and CN dropped the show without wrapping up the series.

That's what I'm wondering too also the series was always going to be ended with a full-feature film, not with a series finale.

I know, I was looking forward to that as a kid too! It would've looked so awesome on the big screen.

Honestly though, I'm not sure I'm as excited as I seem to be, Mako MADE that show, AKU was the true star and even a good impersonation is still an impersonation....

It'll be along the lines of watching the Looney Tunes after Mel Blanc died. The VAs try their best but it just ain't the same.

The guy who took over for Mako on Avatar was pretty good. It was off, but damn close. Maybe he could do it?

I'm not sure, but I think he may be confused and talking about Sym-Bionic Titan and not Samurai Jack.

#33

Yoshimickster

Yoshimickster

Oooooooooooh yeah! That show should've gotten a better chance.

#34

AshburnerX

AshburnerX

Sym-Bionic Titan is apparently becoming part of Toonami starting next week, along with the new Thundercats cartoon. I couldn't be happier. Both are excellent examples of American action cartoons and I'm REALLY hoping that this helps the second season of Thundercats get greenlit (because the show didn't get a proper ending). Makes me wonder if we'll see Samurai Jack and maybe Megas XLR in future weeks.

Basically, Toonami is doing it's damned to avoid showing repeats (consecutively anyway). I think this is a smart move. Even if certain shows become seasonal, it would be a vast improvement over showing the same episodes for years on end.

#35

Yoshimickster

Yoshimickster

Toonami...is....bringing...back...SYMBIONIC TITAN! SATAN BLESS YOU STEVE BLUM!

I know he had nothing to do with it, but I like blessing him anyway.

#36

AshburnerX

AshburnerX

Careful though... it's only the episodes they have. It is INCREDIBLY unlikely that GT would come back to do more and I doubt they would do it without him.

I'm actually more excited about the Thundercat cartoon. It was fantastic but the toys didn't sell, mainly because they kept moving the fucking show around. It sort of what happened to the last 6 episodes of Generator Rex: they moved to to 8 am on Saturdays, but didn't give ANY notice and finished out the run there, along with the final episodes of Ben 10 Universe.

#37

Yoshimickster

Yoshimickster

Yeah I remember missing the finale of Generator Rex. Now I know why. DAMN YOU SCHEDULERS!

Still, I really hope Gendy comes back to do Titan, that show had LOADS of potential. But if not, I'm cool with just seeing the re-runs.

AshburnerX

Titan was basically the victim of the fight between Genndy and the management of Cartoon Network. The show was cancelled because "they couldn't figure out how to do a toy tie-in", but it was really because Genndy wanted more episodes to finish the story right and they wouldn't give it to him, so he finished the run and went to Sony Pictures Animation. This has happened before: Samurai Jack was abandoned because it wasn't making tons from it's merch ether, despite getting numerous award nominations and doing well in ratings.

That being said, Genndy DID say at Comiccon 2012 that the show COULD be rebooted, but it would have to be after Hotel Transylvania. So this might be the dry run to see if there is interest for it.

This is what sucks about merchandising, it can end up ruining a good franchise. I'm also annoyed how Cartoon Network thought that JUST BECAUSE it was a mecha show it needed a toy line. This a major qualm I have with mecha shows in general, its just so toy obsessed! Can't a show about giant robo suits be just about giant robot suits?!

There wasn't shit for Merch on Samurai Jack, that was the problem. I would have gladly bought sets of figures/statutes etc as would the very large fanbase that it has.

If Gen were to get the rights to Jack and start a kickstarter, I guarantee a 1 day finance meet.

Actually they did, I even had a Aku toy that was slightly posable. Though I understand why you wouldn't know since I can't find one Samurai Jack toy commercial. Cartoon Network has only themselves to blame for it not doing better commercially. I mean seriously, they couldn't make one commercial for THIS?!

No, you don't understand... the toy line thing was an excuse. They KNEW how to monetize it. They just let it die so they wouldn't have to deal with Genndy anymore. You need to understand that less than half of the executives that work at CN actually have cartoon experience, due to many of them joining the network through mergers with other Ted Turner networks. It's the reason why they've been doing live action shows lately; most of the execs don't understand how cartoons are produced and/or don't want to be held responsible for the fickle nature of the medium.

Basically, Genndy got in a pissing match with the people who managed his show and they told him (the most successful director on the network) to fuck off. So he left and they let it die.

#43

Yoshimickster

Yoshimickster

So...what your saying is they purposely ruined what could have been a good franchise JUST SO THEY WOULDN'T WORK WITH GENDY TARTAKOVSKY?! Well*clap* I'm gonna go work on my world domination plans now. AND CARTOON NETWORK'S ON THE TOP OF MY LIST!

I recall the new Thundercat toys being completely fucked up to (Bandai of America so it's not like it's a big shock), with a big lack of variety.

Now if you want to talk toys, the new TMNT figures for the show are quite well done.

They DO look good don't they? Sure they got an extra toe but I got over that in like a minute. Show is pretty good too.
