[Green] Arrow Trailer, Show coming this fall

So Arrow looks incredibly promising. My sister, who has a Green Arrow poster up on her wall, is a bit annoyed by the name change but she thinks it looks pretty good. Also looks like we're getting Deathstroke in a proper live action TV appearance, so that's cool.

Minor Comic Book Fan Nitpicks:
  • Why is the city named "Starling City" and not "Star City"?
  • Why the hell is Ollie's soon-to-be-a-villain friend named Tommy Merlyn? Merlyn The Archer has used the perfectly serviceable alias of "Arthur King" in the comics.
  • Aaaand Black Canary had a little sister, who Ollie was cheating on her with, and who died in the same accident that stranded Ollie. And she was dating him before either of them were super heroes. She gets such hit and miss portrayals in other media, and this one leans towards miss.

#2

sixpackshaker

sixpackshaker

Well Star City was always a terrible name.

They should just make Black Canary like her comic character...

I wonder if Ollie will pick up a kid sidekick.

I hope they don't screw this up too much, Green Arrow has always been one of my favorite characters.

It's on the CW, so I'm cautious at best. They're very often "Dawson's Creek"-ey.

The way it's costumed and shot, I'm almost surprised they didn't change his name to "Garrett."

What's with every superhero needing to know his arch-nemesis before being a superhero these days... it was bloody annoying hen they did it with Lex ages ago and it still is.

Definitely a B-list TV show, but done pretty well for the budget.

I liked that they named dropped Grell, and several DC comics references.

Watched this past weeks episode, much better than I thought. Not at all like Smallville, which is definitely a good thing.

If Smallville is One Tree Hill, Arrow is Supernatural. The one episode I saw had a very different tone from Smallville. Also Deadshot. Three Episodes in and it already had more references to the greater DCU than the first 3 seasons of Smallville.

#13

ThatNickGuy

ThatNickGuy

Name dropping Supernatural doesn't help, either, as I didn't dig that show.

Also, Deadshot does not have a pornstache. Deadshot isn't Deadshot without the pornstache.

#14

I've really been digging it so far. I like that he's conflicted about keeping up his playboy cover but seeing his sister follow his lead. The only thing I don't like is how the island is a big mystery. I hope they're not trying for a LOST element.

Yeah, so the preview for the next episode had Deathstroke in it... the mask looked kinda silly though, cheap plastic like... hope that was just bad lighting in that 1 sec they showed it.

Uh...we're four episodes in. If you're unsure of the quality, you could try watching the show. In terms of ratings, it is pretty low for broadcast...but a quick check of TV By The Numbers showed it to be the highest rated program on the CW so far this week. And that is with a fall off of a million viewers since the premier. So it's doing pretty well. I'm personally rather enjoying it.

It wasn't so much a comment on it being bad, so much on it may not being successful. The last live action super-hero show to do well was *shutter* Smallville, and that was only because they pumped in as much teen angst as possible and as little heroing as possible. I'd be happy if this show gets a good run but if we end up seeing "Bring back Arrow" petitions, I won't be suprised. Dear lord television networks have killed my optimism.

Heroes did really well before they killed it in the second season.

The last three seasons of Smallville, particularly nine and ten, were pretty good in my opinion. Closest we've come to a serious Justice League show, with a focus on their version of The World's Finest team. Anything that gives us a Booster Gold spotlight episode and a Justice Society TV movie is OK in my book. But I digress.

Your pessimism is unwarranted at this stage. The show has been highly promoted, its premier has the highest ratings the CW has seen in three years, and the ratings are consistently great (for The CW, if it were one of the four major networks, then we'd be talking cancellation). You're speculating that an unadulterated hit will be cancelled prematurely. Despite what might be indicated by their threshold for a hit (and by renewing Nikita, which I love but is an abject ratings failure), the CW does in fact want to make money. If Arrow keeps putting up the numbers, they'll keep it around. Hell, we can probably be expecting some spiritual spin-offs already.

#25

Yoshimickster

Yoshimickster

Meh, I guess I can stave to be optimistic about television for once.

#26

Norris

Norris

So as it turns out, my annoyance at Tommy Meryln's name was a big unfounded. He's not a black clad evil archer.

His father, Malcolm Merlyn (played by John Fucking Barrowman!) is. He's also the leader of The List's conspiracy, which I'm starting to think might be tied to the island.

I'm still digging it. I really enjoyed the episode with the royal flush gang. Now that they introduced huntress as a love interest I think things are going to really scale up in both action and drama.

I gave this show a try and made it through the first 8 episodes or so. It's okay, but I just don't see why people are raving about it. It's still that same stiff, lifeless CW kind of show with pretty, talentless actors. Also, given that they all look almost the same, I kept getting confused about which woman was playing who. Like when Huntress showed up and I confused her with the actress that plays Black Canary (or "Not Black Canary, Yet").

Dinah Lance is Black Canary in the comics, so I was just assuming. Regardless, that wasn't my key point.

The original plan was to have him late in the season (like episode 20) to serve as a sort of pilot episode for the series, but they scrapped that idea in favor of a straight up pilot. No idea if that means they're not having him in an episode at the end of the season though.

Yes.

The show can bounce around in quality, but the writers know what they're doing and things start to greatly improve about halfway through season one (without a complete change in premise that came about from a movie) and things payoff by the finale.

What change of premise? The show had it all planned from the get go. Why do you think the actors and creators kept saying "just hang in there, it's going to get great". They knew what was going to be revealed with the release of Winter Soldier. You make it sound like they came up with it at the last minute and threw it together off the cuff. I am sorry the slow burn disagreed with you but I will be honest, I watched all of Arrow season one and it had a lot of issues that required overlooking to enjoy the show, easily as much as AoS. Primary among them was Laurel. She drags down that series as does all the silly will he sleep with her or some other chick, does she love him or his best friend... it gets painfully old and I found the best way to enjoy the show was to fast forward past any scene with Laurel. The show would be better without her. I will take a complicated long-con style story to the CW bullshit any day.

Yes... yes she can. She exists purely to push the love triangle angle that CW shows think is necessary to get female viewers to watch, her story lines do more to bog down and overly complicate the plots rather than adding to them, and the actress just isn't that good.

#70

Covar

Watching episode 2 of season 3...ugh Laurel.

#71

phil

phil

Just finished season two! Man I like this show. There are certainly some CWy things that bring it down

1) Felicity almost exclusively wears designer dresses that are super tight fitting and with super short skirts which is weird considering what she actually does day to day.

2) The constant love triangles of ollie with Sara, laurel and then whoever the hell else they can get on the show.

3) Laurel could actually be a really good character who is strong in her own right. I mean she knows self defense, right? When the copy cat hoods killed the current mayor she took one of them down if even temporarily. I mean she's not on Ollie or Sara or even Diggle's level but she's got the basics. But even ignoring that she's a prosecuting attorney! She has legal smarts that the rest of the team doesn't have. She could bring a side of realism to the show by reminding them that the bad guys still have to be caught by the police or something or why they can't move on the big bad because they don't have the evidence or something.

4) Ollie just needs to come out and tell someone everything that happened on the island. I mean we constantly get scenes that basically play out as

Diggle: Ollie we need to do this thing!
Ollie: We can't do that thing!
Felicity: Why can't we bang I mean do that thing?!
Ollie: Because of something that happened on the island!
Phil: <sigh> can't we get another Deadshot episode?

No, but seriously I think this is a great show. I hate because I love. It's like when Lee Adama kept kinda switching sides in BSG. It was super annoying but hell if I wasn't going to watch because of a few dumb things.

Yes, secret invisible ink that is only revealed by heat! An ancient art that is known only to the League of Assassins... and to third grade science classes.

Seriously, no one thought to check the carefully folded blank sheet of paper for hidden messages? No multispectral imaging? Nothing? Just thought it was blank, yeah...

I'll let it drop, eventually, but I think it bugs me so much because it's a simple fix. A lot of the crazy stuff the show has done has been for the sake of the plot, or because it's a crazy world. This... this could have just been a vial of secret liquid revealing the message, instead of flame, and it would have been a real secret of the League, one that even confounded all the tech Felicity could throw at it.

Campy, yes. But I love it
I've been really pleased by how The Flash has turned out. It feels like they've done a good job of embracing the characters and (no pun intended) running with it right out the gate, unlike Arrow which had a rough start but has gotten better.

Also, the crossover episodes they did with both shows did a nice job of playing off the differences between the two. Good work also on how they realized Captain Boomerang and Rainbow Raider (who's mainly known by the name of Roy G. Bivolo). Hell, I suppose it says something that they were even willing to throw in Rainbow Raider at all.

If it's alright with people, I suggest we turn this thread into the DC TV programming thread to give an equal space now that DC's TV shows are expanding beyond just Arrow.

For one thing, I'm not even sure if Slade still has the Mirakuru. At this point, he may be back to being just a regular badass, rather than a super badass.

Also, I think this is just more in reference to the fact that most of the villains on Arrow have been more human. Even when they do have powers, it's more along the lines of increased strength. Here, we're talking a new villain for the show who can control plasma energy. That's definitely something a bit different than most of the villains in Arrow.

Brandon Routh and Victor Garber are both confirmed to be in it, basically confirming the Atom and Firestorm showing up, and three heroes who haven't been seen on TV before will be making their debuts on it. Honestly, details are really sparse, but perhaps this might be a CW DC take on the old "Brave and the Bold" comic series.

And, oddly, Caity Lotz is attached to the project. (io9) Not a complaint, obviously -- it's just unexpected.

It's hitting its sophomore slump a year late. It hasn't been bad, there's been some great episodes even, but Flash has just been so good it kind of makes Arrow feel a little more ho hum.

Plus focusing on Laurel for so much of it hasn't helped at all.

Yeah, I marathoned 1 and 2. I have had little interest in 3. It just feels so unmotivated. I couldn't wait to see what happened with Brother Blood and Deathstroke, but then it seemed like the major plot had played out I guess.

I think the issue this season is that they're basically retelling a Batman story with Green Arrow inserted for Batman.

I did like the cute little Merlyn the Magician wink this season.

I'm still enjoying it, just not as much as the other two seasons.

Also.... so, the Atom is Iron Man?

Looks that way. I wonder, if Ant Man does well, do you think we'll see him shrink next season?

They've been ripping off Batman for three seasons now, that's nothing new.

Green Arrow has been ripping off Batman for 70 years now.

More news has come out about the DC anthology series. A character breakdown gave some descriptions of new heroes who will be appearing. I'll list the descriptions along with my predictions on who they might be.

The Traveler: “Han Solo-esque rogue who gets by with his charm, this hero hails from the future, and has journeyed back in time on a secret mission. His razor-sharp wit hides the pain of a man who has lived through serious conflict. He also harbors many secrets, always leaving both his teammates and the audience unsure of his true allegiances.”
My prediction: either Booster Gold or Rip Hunter.

Female Warrior: "This twentysomething Latina is pretty but unassuming, book smart and socially awkward by day. But by night, when she hears the cry of battle, her fury is ignited and she becomes a fierce warrior — so much so, that sometimes she can become a threat to others."
My prediction: Either Fury or Yolanda Mortez (granddaughter of Ted Grant, the original Wildcat).

Mystery Hero: “An African-American male in his twenties will fill the role of a regular, street smart guy who unexpectedly gains powers, and then, as part of the team, regularly quips about the insanity of the situations.”
My prediction: Static.

How many times has a fake Arrow framed the real one by showing up in Starling and shooting some bad guys fatally?

Cap. Lance isn't exactly a great detective. I mean, doesn't he know that Roy, Felicity and Laurel are all connected to The Arrow and still has to be told that The Arrow is the one link between all these people?

So I can see how he would believe that the mayor was killed by The Arrow despite master archers being a dime a dozen.

This season started slow and meandering but after the Flash crossover I think it shook of the rust and has been going strong. This last episode is my favorite episode of the run bar none.

Watching the season finale and I actually have to pause it to come here and say this:

Dear Laurel,

thousands of lives are on the line. I mean that literally. Thousands of people are going to die tonight if you don't stop the big master plot. Consider that lots of people die once a year in this city already and consider that you have the power to stop this, but you have to move fast. The more time you take the less likely you will stop this thing and, as I've said before, thousands of people will die.

Shut the fuck up about your father drinking again. No one cares. This is something you can deal with later. I'm not sure why I have to explain this to you.

Your sister was better in every way,
---Phil.

PS

ARE YOU KIDDING ME SMOKE?! YOU WANNA TALK INSTEAD OF LOOKING FOR THE THING TOO?

Fuck it. This city is full of idiots. Let 'em die.

edit
I really love this show but boy does it piss me off sometimes.

Icky icky icky. Felicity and Oliver...it's like cousins kissing. I hate it. Hate it. Now that I know how the season ends (it's really hard for me to quit before a season ends), I might just be done. If those two are going to be pressing their faces together on the regular, I am all kinds of done.

Also, I'm glad Thea got better.

Eh, I've still only seen the first season (nothing else has aired here) of Arrow and haven't seen any Flash yet, and I still come into these threads. I'm ok with spoilers here, but yours seemed like a somewhat serious spoiler for other people who mgiht be just one or two episodes behind as well ;)

Arrow is getting its first metahuman villain in the form of Deathbolt, who will be played by Doug Jones.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand he's dead. Cold iced him in Flash this week.

Arrow is garbage.

It's basically the Felicity Smoak show and her character has been reduced to someone who just cries constantly and detracts from every other character.

At least Laurel got better. So did Thea.

Still, probably going to drop this and just watch the occasional Flash / Legends of Tomorrow tie-ins.

Catching up on season 3 finally. The most irritating moment has to be in the Captain Boomerang episode. "Quick! I need lidocaine!" "Uh, we have epinephrine!" "Close enough!" What? In what way is a numbing agent close to adrenaline?

They're both medical sounding. I can almost guarantee that "Close enough" was probably used in the writers room with dialogue.

Okay, this Felicity stuff is getting stupid. I could suspend disbelief when she was hacking into every computer system under the sun, but now she's hacking things with no network presence whatsoever, like the backhoe. And also suddenly she's a hardware expert, too! She designed and manufactured a quantum processor chip, despite being a computer scientist. That is a completely different skill set and education.

Are we still talking about the show where people come back to life and nobody can recognize people under a hood?

Yeah, that reminds me. The one time Roy shows up before Lance as Arsenal, Lance immediately recognizes him and says he won't be fooled by a hood. Really? You recognize a guy you arrested once, but you can't recognize the dude your daughters dated and played with as kids?

After this mid-season finale, a certain character's death might also save this show.

Ok, just going by the track record of this show, Felicity won't die but they will fake her death. Now it would be interesting if she is so badly injured that she ends up in a wheelchair paving the way for the CW version of Oracle and eventually Birds of Prey.

Ugh, I hope not. Nobody can replace Barbara Gordon (one of my favorite characters).

Especially not Felicity, who has gone from mildly annoying to OMG I HATE YOU STABBITY-STAB-STAB-STAB. Her l33t h4x0r abilities ( ) have gone from "oooookay, that's a stretch, but it's superheroes so I'll overlook it", to "WHAT THE EVERLOVING FUCK????". The instant Betamax conversion from last week (??!), and then taking control of a RC helicopter from a tablet in seconds? Really? And then while Laurel grabbed a couple kids to save, Felicity saved her tablet and left the young girl she had just been talking to standing on the beach to get shot at, oh my god what a hero.

The thing with Ollie is just weird and boring and...what? I have no idea what they see in each other and they have no romantic chemistry and did I mention it's boring? She was less annoying when she was with Ray, at least that made sense and had chemistry. With less crying.

She's not interesting and is pretty much only there to give Ollie angst. They should replace her with Curtis Holt and he can become Mr. Terrific (a tech person and an interesting character). And for Ollie angst, just replace her with the Baby Mama in Central City.

Though, since Batman exists in the CW universe (there's been references to the "Dark Knight" and to Wayne Tech), hopefully Felicity is Dead Means Dead and they can replace her with the real Oracle (maybe tied into Gotham's backstory?) :D
