Alright, so Dave's health thread kind of spurred me on a bit. I'm already losing weight and I think I'm doing alright on my own, but I do not exercise at all, and I should. I've got squishy arms, some tummy, rather thick (squishy) legs, and some (smaller than before) moobs.

From my understanding, these aren't things that go away really without weight loss.

So as a personal trainer, I wanted to ask, what is a good workout to start out with? Make these assumptions:

1) I have no equipment
2) I will not have access to equipment
3) I have no set routine whatsoever beyond my morning of "wake up, get shower, eat breakfast". After that it's up to a lot of variables what I'll be doing in the day, but "get time in for exercise" will not work since I can't make it a habit.

So let's assume I have 5-15 minutes before my shower. What is the most effective exercise I can get in that small timeframe with just my body? (ie, pushups, situps, etc.)

Again, this isn't exercise to lose weight, it's exercise to get the rest of my body in gear. I have good endurance. (I can do plenty of pushups without getting tired, though I don't know the number. I can run for a bit without getting overly winded. Etc.)

What would you reccomend?

You have got to make time and make it a habit no matter what you do. Saying "I can't" is giving yourself a reason to not do it.

You may not be able to say "well, Mondays through Thursdays I can work out, blah blah blah..," but you may have to figure "Well, an hour cleared up for me later today, I'll be able to use that to exercise a bit!"

The Poptart Queen is right, saying "I can't" is a death sentence for this sort of thing. It's all about dedicating yourself, both physically and mentally, to finding a way to get the work in. It definitely doesn't come easy, not even a little toning or tightening up.

You don't have to excercise every day to show results either. Back when I was thin, I used to do a 30 minute work out on the odd days, and a 10 min workout on the even days and took the weekends off. It worked great.

Check out the Royal Canadian air force's fitness ladder. You can find a version of it here:

Click on "What, Me Exercise?" and select "The fitness ladder" for an intro. You are supposed to spend 15 minutes each session, and if the rung you're on takes less time, go up a rung, and if it's taking longer than 15 minutes go down a rung. The site uses frames so while I've linked to the sections in this paragraph, you might want to start at the link above and navigate around rather than clicking the links above.

There are similar programs elsewhere, but this one is relatively easy, and doesn't require any equipment or significant space (ie, can be done in quarters on a cramped ship).

get a kettle bell. investigate beginner kettle bell routines. be careful. profit.
Also, make little changes in everything through your day. Park farther away, like in the back forty and walk to the store. make sure you do little things and little changes to everything, not just an exercise routine.

This. By just making your overall day HARDER, you'll gain endurance over time, as well as maybe losing weight.

I do have the incredible urge to run a bunch recently. I guess if I go to Wal-Mart I could park in the back and just book it. ;P

I'm sure that'd create some stares. ESPECIALLY if I bolt back to the car after leaving. Hahahaha...

Thanks, I'll try these. I think I'd feel a little bit like an idiot doing the leg lift though.
