A Sylvania Township couple received a double whammy of astonishing news this year from their fertility doctor, news that landed them on national television Monday. The first part they anticipated: Carolyn Savage was pregnant. But the follow-up that came later carried a horrifying jolt: It's not their baby.

Carolyn and Sean Savage shared with the Today Show audience the extraordinary story of how a fertility clinic accidently implanted the wrong embryo into Mrs. Savage. \"We had been delivered the worst news of our life,\" Mr. Savage told host Meredith Vieira during the live television interview from their living room. The Savages, already parents to three biological children despite years of reproductive difficulties and miscarriages, explained how, because of their religious beliefs, they never considered aborting the fetus.

Not wanting to destroy their remaining frozen embryos after the successful in vitro fertilization and delivery last year of their youngest child, they returned to their fertility clinic in February to try for one more.Mrs. Savage, 40, is due to give birth in two weeks via cesarean section, and said she and her husband are prepared to give the boy to his biological parents, whom they have met. During the meeting, the biological mother seemed \"so grateful for what we had done.\"
\"We're trying to look at it as a gift for another family that eight months ago we didn't know,\" she said.

Mrs. Savage said the mother agreed to let her have a moment with the baby \"to say hello and good-bye\" before handing him over. \"We know they did not ask for this. We are not going to press ourselves into their lives. \"Of course we will wonder about this child every day for the rest of our lives. We have hopes for him - but they're his parents,\" she said. When contacted at her home Monday night, Mrs. Savage said she and her husband are working with a public relations firm.

She declined to comment to The Blade Monday but said they are planning to talk with local media later this week. Mr. Savage, a self-employed financial adviser, said their two older children, boys ages 15 and 12, are OK with what their parents are going through. \"We've tried to set a tone inside our house that is conducive to keeping this in the most positive way as a teaching moment for them: When you face a tough situation in life, how are you going to handle it?,\" Mr. Savage said. Attorneys for the Savages said in a statement for the Today Show that they are working to make sure that the fertility clinic \"will accept full responsibility for the consequences of their misconduct.\"

The show did not name the clinic or the baby's biological parents. The Savages said in the interview that after the baby is born, they'll attempt to use the last of their remaining frozen embryos. Because Mrs. Savage has been told that this is her final pregnancy, they have signed a contract with a surrogate mother to carry to term what will be the fourth child of their own.

That has to be extremely hard. I can't imagine what she is going to go through after giving birth and having to give that child away...

Their religious beliefs don't allow for aborting the fetus, but allow for masturbation, frozen embryos, science overtaking Gods will, etc. Go figure

As for the clinic getting it wrong, I just don't know how that possible. Hell, when we did it every bloody step was "Is this your name? Is this your embryo? Are these your sperm?"

I got the same thing, only followed by "Do you really think this is appropriate at a TGIFridays?"

Some people are able to reconcile their belief in divinity with current advances in science. Not everyone is a bible thumping bigot.

Edited to clarify current religious inclinations.

That's fine, but unless you're Mr and Mrs Savage that doesn't have much bearing on their reasoning from the article, do it?

I'm surprised the idea of abortion even came up. It's good that they're handling it well and not fighting to keep it, even though I could see reasons for them wanting to.

I wonder how the other family feels about the situation. What did they do when the company told them that they put the embryo in someone else?

I'd be suing the center for $250,000+ which is the estimated cost of raising a child born in 2009.

It was probably the first thing they were asked by every reporter and friend who heard the story. After all pregnancy and birth are still draining and not completely safe undertakings for a couple and going through all that for a complete stranger's kid without any compensation is probably alien to anybody who hears the story.

Possession is 9/10's of the law. Sorry other parents, just wait a month to ovulate and let the husband whip up some more little sailors... problem solved. sorta.

I think his point is that his ideas about religion are based exclusively on crazy evangelical fringe groups...

Ya know.... even if I found out that my embryo had been implanted in another woman, I really don't think I would demand the baby back. My gosh- she's there for fertility issues too, and you're going to take away a successful pregnancy??!? After carrying the baby full term, it just seems really selfish to me for the other couple to say "Ok! Thanks for all the gestation work. Now gimme my baby. kthxbye"

Me, I would be making the fertility center pay for my next round of treatment for DAMNED sure, but to take the baby from a woman who has been carrying it already just seems really selfish.

Except that this lot have been having quite a lot of difficulties with infertility. Hence the wife's esoteric means of getting pregnant.

I'm sure they'll be comforted by the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars that they're going to win in the lawsuit.

Now that I've finally read the article, it was very good of them to give the baby back. What I wonder is, why didn't the other couple reciprocate? Basically be each others surrogate mother.

If you go in for fertility treatment, you are creating embryos that will inevitably get destroyed. If you have religious objections to abortion, there's really no way that you can't have religious objections to the fertility treatments, especially if embryos are being frozen (Which inevitably destroys 50% of them). Just because you don't make the singular decision "Hey, destroy embryo x", the destruction still happens, with your full consent. Their religious beliefs end where it becomes convenient for them. That's what I have a problem with.

Yeah, it's pretty much been that way since the dawn of religion though. :slywink:

I have to admit I didn't know that.
