You will have your assignment this weekend. You will be expected to send a gift via email or mail by Friday December 13th.

It's a shortened 1 week sign up, two weeks to send secret santa this year. There is no extra time after the 13th for gift sending - you must send it by the 13th of December.

What is it?
Just what it sounds like. It's a Secret Santa between your fellow halforumites. Everyone who signs up will be randomly assigned another participant. You are then tasked to buy that person a gift. As a recipient, you should leave a few hints in a post to this thread as to what sort of interests you have.

Rules and Info
  • International people are allowed. If you would prefer not to get an international person, indicate so when you sign up. It may be the case that if you restrict your choice to local shipping then matching might not work out and you may be left out - I'll let you know once the matching is complete if that's the case. So far we've always been able to match everyone that wanted to participate and meet their shipping requirements.
-International Shipping Links: USPS, Customs Forms
-Tips for shipping in and out of Canada
-Remember to allow extra shipping time when shipping outside of your home country
  • To sign up fill out this form:
    http://semiaxis.com/hf/
  • Who can sign up?
To keep things fair, only those with a join date earlier than April 15, 2013 and more than a handful of posts will be allowed to participate for obvious reasons. If you would like to participate and don't fall under the requirements then you will just have to wait until next year. The final say of who can join this activity will be entirely up to Dave so there may be exceptions, but the final word is final. Don't complain if special dispensation is not made for you. This goes for those who may be disincluded as well.
  • The deadline for signing up will be November 26th. After that day, Santas will be randomly assigned by computer. You will be sent an email or PM shortly after with the information of whom you will be drawing a gift for.
  • Recommended gift value is $5-20. Feel free to spend as much as you want, just be aware that the more you spend, the less likely you will receive a gift of equal value. Also, homemade/handmade gifts are allowed, and even encouraged (no homemade food please).
  • ABSOLUTE FINAL DEADLINE FOR GIFTS SENT IS DECEMBER 13th! PEOPLE WHO DO NOT SEND GIFTS BY DECEMBER 13th WILL BE SUSPENDED BY THEIR BIG TOES AND LEFT TO DRY OUT IN THE COLD, DRY MICHIGAN WINTER. NO EXCEPTIONS. If you are not CERTAIN you will be able to send a gift, then don't sign up.
  • Do not complain about your gift, conversely, try to send something you think the other person will like.
  • You MUST post pictures of your gift when you receive it. No exceptions.
  • UNLESS SPECIFIED AS SOMETHING THEY WOULD LIKE, PLEASE DO NOT SEND NSFW OR ALCOHOLIC GIFTS. Please note that many states/nations have rules about shipping alcohol, so when in doubt, choose another gift.
  • CAN I SHIP SOMETHING STRAIGHT FROM AMAZON OR SOMETHING?
Yes you can, and it's a good idea to shop at your person's home country's Amazon site (www.amazon.ca for instance) if you want to save a bit on shipping.
  • SHIP WELL IN ADVANCE
Get your act together NOW and ship your stuff by Dec 13th to make sure it arrives before the crazy Christmas rush that always happens at the latter half of December.

I really wish I could participate, but without steady employment and money being as tight as it is, I'm not sure I'll be able to get my family any gifts, much less random internet peeps. I loved last years, though, and I'll make it up to whoever gets me next year.

I've had too much fun the last couple years to miss out.

Heck, I've used some of the gifts I've gotten, from both years I've participated, within the last couple days.

A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES!!!!

I think it's high time that I participate in this here dog and pony show. I've been really good with my money this year, so I figure I can afford to participate.

Also anything I get would be ordered through a web site, so shipping outside the country may be problematic, but I think Canada would be OK.

Oh dear. This again? Must we do this every. damn. year.?!

Fine, fine....I'll go along with it....For now.

Some fun info while you are all waiting for this to start:

This will be the fifth annual Halforums secret Santa. Over the past four years 52 people have participated in one or more of these. 8 people have participated all four years, 7 people participated in three of the four years, and 10 people participated in two of the four years.

In three of those four years we had exactly 27 participants. In 2010 only 19 people participated, with many bowing out due to financial issues.

You have to be careful, though... This kind of behaviour has its side effects. Last year and the year before it was the whole communoity coming together to help those who had had a very bad year (gonna start playin' GTAV soon, so thank you ^_^). And beyond such communal efforts, there's been a sharp increase in RAKs - Random Acts of Kindness.

Why, just today I received a strange package from Amazon. I thought it was my Ciaphas Cain omnibus, so you can just imagine how surprised I was when I found the gift-wrapped package to contain The Witch Watch by Shamus Young, with an accompanying note saying the sender had found it interesting and wanted to share it with me. This person* also requested that I "continue being myself". This can only mean a security breach, as only a handful of people knew of my plan to reinvent myself as a goat farmer in the Hebrides.

With this new Secret Santa drive, I have no doubt we will continue to see many more RAKs.

*
thank you, @Bubble181 :) You are awesome.

Send me a PM. I don't think I'm going to be able to make the assignments until Friday evening, so you can still be included. The pm needs to have your first and last name, shipping address as it should appear in the mailing label, shipping preference (us only, North America only, anywhere, or something else), and any notes you want sent to your secret Santa.

Oh shit. My name isn't on the list.

The computer upon which I stored prior year's assignment summaries died a few weeks ago, and I don't have time to resurrect it.

So, now I suppose is a good time to let people know what you'd like if you didn't in the signup form.

I'm pretty simple. Anything geeky- Doctor Who, Comics (Marvel preferred--yeah, I know, I know--), movies, vidja games.
I LOVE crafty little puzzles, such as puzzle rings, puzzle boxes, brain teaser puzzles, etc...
I pretty much direct anyone who asks me about gifts to Think Geek :p

If a t-shirt gets in the mix, I'm an XXL (god damn, I need to go on a diet).

#89

Dei

Dei

I am a giant nerd (gaming, books, movies, TV, you name it) and I play roller derby, I'm pretty sure if you combined the two you could not go wrong. ;)

If it comes into play, I usually wear a medium as well.

strawman

Yes! Please! Even if you did fill out the note field, consider posting ideas, thoughts, and wishlists to this thread, I assure you that your santa will find it very, very helpful!

Also, all assignments have been made. If you don't see your assignment in your forum inbox, send me a message.

#91

Bowielee

Bowielee

People may find it helpful to know that Think Geek is having massive black friday sales, so I'd suggets hopping on there ASAP if you want to get stuff a bit cheaper.

#92

Officer_Charon

Officer_Charon

For myself, most anything cop, medieval, gun, fantasy or sci-fi related should be okay....

I've found myself falling out of the stereotypical "geek" genre, simply because I can't keep up with y'all! *laughs* For example, I'm DEFINITELY not current on Doctor Who.

Favorite anime is still Gunslinger Girl.

Steam gift cards are always welcome, as well.

Of course, should my Secret Santa have won the lottery, 14th century German armour or garb is always welcome! *laughs*

Edit:
Forgot to mention - shirt size is XL - large makes me look like a guido douche trying to show off my arms. Don't know if hoodie size is the same - I don't own one. *grins*

#93

Tress

Tress

  • I read quite a bit. For the most part I enjoy light sci-fi/fantasy, history, and pretty much anything well-written.
  • I enjoy good food and drink. If you live in an area with something distinctive (for example, the SF Bay Area is known for wine, sourdough bread, chocolate, etc.) that you would like to share, I'm all for it.
  • I'm a huge history nerd. I'm also a history teacher, so anything cool I can show off in class to a bunch of jaded teenagers is always welcome.
  • I'm a music nut (mostly classic, modern, indie, and alternative rock).
  • If you're truly stumped, gift cards to Amazon/Steam/iTunes are always fun.
  • I'm down for anything and I'll be quite happy/appreciative.

#94

BErt

I'm a big nintendo nerd (specifically LoZ or Pokemon stuff), a big Batman fan, and really just a geek in general so anything from Thinkgeek is just fine. I'm also still trying to get clothes that fit after losing a bunch of weight so any M shirts would be great also.

If all else fails, I would love to travel but have no money to do so and I really would like things local to cities and areas that I probably won't make it to anytime soon.

#95

Cajungal

Cajungal

I like Adventure Time, amusing socks, and fun local knickknacks. If my SS is arty/crafty and feels inclined to spend the time... it doesn't get much better than that in terms of gifts.

#96

Gusto

Gusto

I like local shotglasses/pint glasses and craft beers/liquors. I'm also trying to read more sci fi. I'm a size M T-short or L long-sleeve. I own a 3DS with only Animal Crossing and Pokemon X if someone can find a cheap game they wanna send. I'm also into board games or card games but those tend to get a little costly.

Thank you!

#97

Emrys

Emrys

If you've been around here for any amount of time, you can guess my passion.

But if you would like some extra help, here is my wish list from Amazon.ca.

I also need a consort to help me rule the world.

#98

Hylian

Hylian

I am a huge geek/nerd/etc and so anything along that spectrum would be excellent. If you want me to be a bit more specific I enjoy Star Trek, Star Wars, LotR, Video Games, etc. I am always interested in trying/learning new things. I am a vegetarian though so I do request nothing made from animals. :)

Some of my favorite things right now are

Star Trek
Futurama
Avatar: The Last Airbender
My Little Pony Friendship is Magic
Reading
Cooking
Anime
Manga

As I mentioned up above I always am up for trying/learning new things. So if see something not on my list but think I would like it I am fine with that as well. And I have no issue with alcohol or NSFW gifts if that is what you want to send.

And here is my Amazon wishlist as well http://amzn.com/w/28FOB42MQTZI3

Oh and if you get a me a shirt I can fit both mediums and larges (I prefer the fit of mediums but I like the length of larges, I know it is the troubles of being tall :) )

#99

Chad Sexington

Chad Sexington

I love pragmatic things: something I can use regularly. I love stuff for making travelling easier/better. High quality journals - particularly with paper that can handle fountain-pen ink without bleeding, are fantastic for travelling. I love my cowboy boots. I like art; I have a lot of things from Mexico decorating my apartment at the moment, and a few paintings from my cousin. Soon I shall have a painting from our own @Gusto !

Services: things that I can use but do not take up space, whether these are gift cards to places, or free classes, or something like that, are highly prized. I have 'stuff' so if I can avoid being cluttered, I'm pretty happy.

Homemade is always more than welcome, and lots of fun.

I have no real restrictions about alcohol or NSFW gifts if your fancy is to send something of the like. I'm pretty good-humoured, or I try to be.[DOUBLEPOST=1386003684,1386003375][/DOUBLEPOST]
I also need a consort to help me rule the world.

My sleep management is basically entirely medical at this point: regardless of environment, if I have my medications, I can sleep, if I don't, I can't. So I don't really use/need anything. Generally I prefer silence and not wearing anything.

Standard Munchkin has been on my wish list for like TWO YEARS. I never can get my family to buy it, though we do play Munchkin Cthulhu, Munchkin Bites, and Munchkin Fu. I guess they all figure we have enough already ;)

It's freaking awesome. We'll probably play this weekend! Thanks so much!

There's a card of course. Time to see who my S.S is.

Awww. Well thank you, Tress. I hope we have time to get to know each other better via the forums. Part of why I like the S.S program. You guys are more like family than just internet peeps.
Well let's see what we have...

I have never heard of this.
Play as cunning field mice who must race through a castle now twenty times larger than before. The castle would be a dangerous place with Vanestra's minions in control, but now countless other terrors also await heroes who are but the size of figs. Play as nimble Prince Collin and fence your way past your foes, or try Nez Bellows, the burly smith. Confound your foes as the wizened old mouse Maginos, or protect your companions as Tilda, the castle's former healer. Every player will have a vital role in the quest to warn the king, and it will take careful planning to find Vanestra's weakness and defeat her.
Mice and Mystics is a cooperative adventure game in which the players work together to save an imperiled kingdom. They will face countless adversaries such as rats, cockroaches, and spiders, and of course the greatest of all horrors: the castle's housecat, Brodie. Mice and Mystics is a boldly innovative game that thrusts players into an ever-changing, interactive environment, and features a rich storyline that the players help create as they play the game. The Cheese System allows players to hoard the crumbs of precious cheese they find on their journey, and use it to bolster their mice with grandiose new abilities and overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.
Sounds...intriguing.

Let's just say I don't have a @klew of what to get my santee

I'm tough for gift-givers, as I tend to just get what I need when I need it, what I want tends to be out of reach for most, even myself, usually due to cost or inability to justify ownership. I guess safe stuff would be travel-related things or little toys that sit on a desktop. For example, latest stuff I bought was a Hexbug Aquabot, Android mascot figure, and a Wall-E Pop Vinyl.

It's two really awesome-looking cookbooks! I'm leafing through the no recipe cookbook as we speak. It's full of really helpful info and guidelines. You are welcome! You made it difficult by not including your phone number.
(Note to future secret Santa recipients...no phone number means Amazon won't let the order process complete)

I know it says "A Beginner's Guide," but what they mean is that it teaches you how to cook, and not merely how to follow a recipe. Go right to page 5 and you'll see why I thought it was right for you.

What? Did they leave off the Haiku? Aww. If you didn't see them, I believe I call out the fact that they have recipes for savory pancakes, too. And if the idea of cheddar pancakes with chive butter doesn't tantalize...then I can't help you.
Also I will make some and then eat them all myself.

Apologies for the picture size/quality...My camera decided sand in the lens was a great way to die (safari in Kenya? No problem! Day out to the beach with my niece? Oops), so webcam of my girlfriend's cheapo laptop it is.

Anyway, thanks Jeff from Texas! I'll admit, despite being a European SciFi loving bastard, that I've never actually read/seen much of Doctor Who. On the other hand, 2 years ago (?) someone sent me 2 James Bond movies, I hadn't seen any of those yet either, and soon after, I bought the full DVD collection. I hope I won't suddenly find myself buying anything and everything Who-related, as I don't have the cash :p
I'm looking forward to reading them, really - I've long been thinking I should get into the Doctor more, and the writers, at the very least, sound like a who's who from my library :-D

I was in doubt between you and Hylian for being my SS :p

And I like it, I do! I've read a lot about Who, and I've seen lots of shorts/documentaries, and it's often discussed around here and on my facebook wall. I never got around to it, not because I think I won't like it or anything, but simply because of "too many things to do, too litle time to do them in" syndrome. Same reason I love RPGs, I love SciFi, and yet I haven't played any of the Mass Effect series. I'll get around to it, I say, and before you know it, 10 years have gone by and it isn't worth it anymore (in the case of ME, the Doctor keeps on going :p).
I can't say I'll suddenly become a huge Who-nut, but it's definitely in the "something that could/would interest me" category, as well as the "something I wouldn't really go and buy for myself" category. Which are the most surprising, and often the best, gifts.
Compare-and-contrast to, say, a Doctor Who-themed bathrobe or refrigerator magnets. Those might be great if I already was a fan, but not as an introduction. This is, at best, an introduction into A Whole New World (tm Disney), or, at worst, an interesting addition to my library and a glimpse into somethnig i'm not into but gave a shot. No matter what, it's at least good, if not great, as a gift, so I'm happy about it.
I'm not in a terribly great mood today, which may reflect negatively on my first post - but I assure you that has nothing to do with being given a lesser gift. Au contraire.

(the 50+minute waiting line in the Post Office? yeah, that might have something to do with it :p)

First up, a Lego yeti. Because everyone needs a yeti! I have to say, this is one of the most random, fun gifts I've gotten.

And inside, next to the yeti, was a nicely wrapped gift (my picture of the box didn't turn out). After opening it up, I found this:

HAHA! UPS finally got their act together and i got 3, count 'em, 3 packages today (2 were supposed to be here Monday so i could fix my dryer...) anyway, a Wild Think Geek package has been dropped off by a mysterious man in brown...

According to the label on the other side it is for ME! Let me find my trusty blade, Husky...

A new catalog... invoice... Message on the invoice, Yea!

"Too bad this box isn't bigger on the inside. (from Seth E. via the internet)"

WOOHOO! What is this under it?!?!?!?!

Those are great! I'll get to use them occasionally, not because I don't like it, I love 'em, but because my daughter will constantly be taking my ice! I'll try to get a pic of the cubes after they freeze. Cause, it's already in the freezer.

Thank you Secret Santa!!

Thank god you finally got it. It was an adventure in frustration getting that to you :p.

I really hope you like them. A suggestion from Think Geek is that you can also use them as chocolate molds to make milk chocolate Tardis and Dalek candies.

I do like them, believe me that I do. My daughter hasn't made it home yet, so maybe I will get my ice before she sees it.

I tried, but I don't have the ability to do proper lighting on them, the photos just come out looking like white blobs. The silicone really does a great job, it gets all the little details into the cubes and allows release without breaking them off. I think my daughter made 3-4 batches of them yesterday alone.

Fantastic! Aaaaah Leyla is so adorable. I love the picture of her sleeping. I thought the blanket was cute (and I like elephants, so..!) - I saw a few nice French-language Christmas bibs but they were all out of stock - boo!

I'm glad you liked the gifts! :) That Marcus Aurelius book is something I carry with me almost everywhere I go; it's advice has been useful at so many times, so I thought it would be a good choice to share.

(I seem to be having some difficulty getting images to display, not sure if the final version will work)
I have been lax and remiss, and for that I apologize. Time is not kind to me at the moment*1. However...

...I did receive this in the mail a while back (12/4).
001.JPG
Dealing with work/family/trip/no camera/etc meant that it had to remain unopened until 12/11 when I was making another trip*2 and could get my camera, so I brought it with me.

Trip and tasks done, time to get busy:

A few tense moments of hack-'n'-slash (no Band-Aids required!), aaand...the contents are revealed:

And then, the reveal.

I don't know who will have more fun. Me, or Cary.
Props to Amazon for including a full belt of ammo with it, though.
Oh hey, what's this nestled below?
005.JPG

Yes the veins in my hands are popping. What do you expect after loading up the car?
It's a...
006.JPG

Hmm...I have considered trying my hand at learning lock picking, I wonder if this'll train the relevant skills (besides patience, I mean)?
(FWIW I haven't solved either of these yet, but I did mention that thing about spare time)
So there we have it:
007.JPG
That cannon should come with a troll face on it. I'm thinking about printing one out just so I can paste it right on the side.

Seriously, since I started typing this I've also had to go to the store for Kati 3 separate times for things for tonight's dinner, as well as help her shred cheese and the like, all while wrangling Cary so he'll stay out of the kitchen.
All my stuff is split between two houses about 150mi apart right now, I go and grab another carful every couple of weeks.

Glad you like them :) I had your kiddo in mind when I got the airzooka, figuring you could have personal fun and daddy fun with the thing.

Those groove tubes are a real challenge. I got you two different difficulty levels. I think they make at least one more that's even harder. You have to visualize in your mind what you're feeling on the tube, so I bet they'll help with the lockpicking.

Props to Amazon for including a full belt of ammo with it, though.

I haven't checked yet to see whether they are vulnerable to a simple right-hand rule attack. I imagine the orange one might be (it says "easy" on it), but dunno about the yellow.
I do wonder, however, as to whether their decision to use a snapshot of a portion of the yellow interior in their promo materials will weaken its challenge. ;)

Given the design (one edge wraps around to the other edge, compared to a flat maze) they could very easily build loops that would defeat the right hand rule.

They could do that, yes. The question is one of whether or not they did. ;)

Some puzzles are designed to be solved. Other puzzles, not so much.

This concludes the 2013 Secret Santa. While there are a few people who could still post pictures (nudge, nudge), everyone has sent and received a gift.

I've really enjoyed putting these together for the last five years! I'm passing the torch to Tress for 2014 and beyond. If I resurrect my computer I will pass along to him the matchups for previous years by username. I will not be passing any other information along. And to satisfy likely curiosity, there's no big reason I'm no longer doing it. It's just a lot of work during a time of the year that I'm already pretty busy. I've tried to pass it off before, but no one else volunteered, so I've just been doing it because I don't want it to go away. Tress chatted with me about it when it was obvious I was struggling to get it started this year and volunteered, so I'm simply taking him up on his offer.

I actually haven't participated these last four years because I've been administering it, and I felt funny knowing who I was assigning myself, even though it was random, and knew that part of the fun is the secret, which I would essentially be denying the person who was assigned to me. Plus on the off chance that someone didn't send a gift, I would be able to step in and make sure that a gift was sent.

I look forward to participating in next year's secret santa, as I'll be in the dark just as much as you all usually are!
