hey guys remember last year when my folks went out of town and I needed pointers on how to do laundry. Well they are going out again this year starting today for 2 weeks. I need to figure out ironing posthaste!

The only thing I can iron is craft projects. I don't even own clothes that need to be ironed.

Depending on the clothes, the ironing technique is similar. Do you starch? That will make ironing a whole new fun level ;)

Funny part about all this sexism? I can't even threaten/get mad.

I iron all my clothes, my ex's clothes and I've done a few others clothes as well. I got good at it when I was serving tables a good while back and we had to wear button up, long sleeve shirts.

Ugh I hate ironing. All I iron is fabric for costumes and also during construction of said costumes.

Basically just iron one layer of fabric (not front and back together at the same time) until it's smooth and then do the other side. Sleeves and legs you pretty much have to iron both sides together (unless you have a sleeve/leg pillow insert) and just make sure you're not ironing a crease into your clothes.

Buy non-iron shirts. Seriously.

Pop it in the washer, pop it in the dryer on low, take it out immediately, hang it up. That shit saves my life for having shirts for work.

Or hang them in the bathroom while you shower! Quick steam :D
^ Totally works.

Also, if you have a spray bottle that's clean. Fill it with water, and a single drop of standard fabric softener (just water is also fine), set it to "mist", spray your shirt on all sides once, toss it in the dryer for a few minutes, pull out and hang immediately while it's still warm.

As the morning person of the house, I actually do all the ironing for the family. It's not incredibly complicated: set iron based on materials described on label, lay item flat on board, move iron around until wrinkles are gone. If your parents have a dryer, you can also just throw anything that is dryer safe in there with a slightly damp washcloth for ten minutes. Typically does a good enough job to get by.

We actually got a new dryer that has a "Quick Refresh" cycle that steams your clothes. Saves me a boatload of time.

add water to iron, heat iron, lay down clothes on ironing board (unless you hate your desk/table), push steam button, and begin ironing.

Ironing is easy to do, hard to do well. Your shirts won't look awesome, but they won't be wrinkled.

I learned this the hard way in the army. I had to iron every part of my uniform to perfection, or else my superior officers would chew me out and then make me iron it again. While chewing me out. And then chew me out again afterwards.

As a result, I am now very good at ironing, though I find I am at a loss to provide any tips or guidance.

I was lucky enough to be able to use a dry cleaning service most the time, give them the spare set of BDU's and the next day I got them back all nice and starched, stiff as a board.

you can always offer to chew THEM out while they are ironing ;)

For Oxford shirt.

Starch Back side of collar, iron it, don't worry about wrinkles.
Starch Front side of collar, smooth with hand, iron it.
Starch Yoke, smooth with hand, iron it.
Starch the button holes, smooth with hand, iron very slowly while stretching it.
Starch the side attached to the button holes, smooth with hand, iron the pocket first if present.
Starch half of the back of the shirt, smooth with hand, iron quickly only paying attention to the pleat.(You will wrinkle the shit out of the back as soon as you sit down anyway.)
Same with next half of the back.
Starch the front side of shirt with the buttons. Smooth, Iron, dodge around the buttons, if you have a nice iron, there will be a groove that will go under the buttons.

NEVER TOUCH THE IRON DIRECTLY TO A BUTTON. THEY WILL ASSPLODE!!!!

Starch one of the cuffs, iron completely, watch out not to wrinkle the fabric near the stitches.
Lay out one side of the sleeve, watch the pleat, smooth carefully with hand, form the top crease manually, then iron slowly.
Flip, starch, repeat.
Then repeat at the cuff of the other sleeve.

BOOM you are done.

If you want it really crisp Starch the whole shirt first, then wad up the shirt. Then go through all those steps listed above. That way you will not miss any parts of the shirt.

If it is a button down, BUTTON THE DAMNED COLLAR DOWN, even if you are not wearing a tie.

Courier them to me, I'll do it for you, God knows if my uniform isn't properly ironed the FUCKING WORLD WILL COLLAPSE.

I had a picture of my finished work but I csant find it at the moment, alas the point is moot, my dear mama has returned and is ironing now
