How many DVDs/Blu-Rays do you own?

Thread spawned from the fact that I just did a mild reorganization/unpacking of my DVDs, and decided to count them. Eyeballing, I thought it'd be 400, but alas, it was only 393. I'll probably be at 400 sooner than later, though! :)

So how many do you have? My only rules really were counting TV seasons as just "1", and obviously not counting bonus discs in box sets and such.

Considering I only purchase movies with a 3x a year minimum rewatch value I am extremely selective of what I own. I have about 100 dvds, and yes, watch them all around 2-3x a year.

0 Blu-Ray
0 HD-DVD
45 DVD (est)
100 VHS (est, probably only 65 of them commercial tapes)

I counted 24. I'm much more into games than videos.

Question: Are you counting only DVD movies, or are you counting television series, stand up acts, music DVDs and the like?

I have really fallen behind in keeping stock of my DVD library. I believe the last count, about 4 years ago when I was moving in with new roommates was edging on 200.
I haven't really bought that much more since then, and I've actually set about 30 aside because I realized I never watch them anymore. Might as well sell them.

But this thread serves as a reminder to get my DVDs reorganized.

A season of TV counts as 1. I don't have any stand up DVDs or music things really. I have one wrestling compilation that I also counted as 1.

Man, I used to buy a ton of them but over the last few years with netflix and such I stopped. It just suddenly stopped being important. I only buy a few a year now but I estimate I probably own around 150 DVDs and maybe 15 BR's.

Probably in the 20-39 range. I just don't watch most of them and have lost a bunch in my many moves over the past couple years.

I CAN tell you without having to go home and check that I have only two blu-rays: Toy Story 3 and Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

About 10 DVDs.

Netflix has really killed how many movies I buy, thankfully, but on occasion one will come that I just gotta have.

However, years ago I used to buy them often, and haven't watched many of them in years. I've likely got 150+ and Dream probably has 100+.

makare

I have 205

Little over 200 DVDs, about 40 Blu-Ray, I tend to buy if it's a good addition to my collection. At least I have watched them all, though many only once. Netflix and the public library allowed me to slow down my purchasing, and being overseas has pretty much stopped all purchases, since I wouldn't be home to watch them (costs too much to import them). I figure when I settle back at home, I'll clean the collection by half and either sell on ebay, donate to the public library (or kids movies to schools/hospitals), or give them away in some amusing fashion.

I am at around 250 american movies, 50 or 60 unique tv series, and 583 unique anime tv series and movies for something like 1500 dvds...I think, i need to run my cataloging software again to get a firm number.

Same Netflix-inspired slowdown as Espy and Escushion, but I'd guestimate around 120 DVDs, 20 Blu-Rays, and 10 movies/TV-shows on iTunes.

A little shy of 300. Like Espy I've slowed down over the last couple of years, but I still pick up a few every year. My only rule is that it has to be something I would want to watch over and over. I often put old favorites on in the background when I'm doing something, like preparing for work.

I was unpacking / looking for something completely unrelated to movies, and I found another few bags full of DVDs! I didn't count, but I'm well over 400 now.

My personal collection, I'm counting 9. Count in the family/house collection, and maybe around 30 or so. Count in all the old VHS's and probably closer to 100, but haven't had a functioning VHS player in years.

300-350, but I don't have cable or satellite so all my TV watching comes from my DVDs.

I counted when I got home last night. Not counting the ones I set aside to hopefully sell off, I have 167 movies, 207 DVDs total. I also realized when you organize alphabetically, you get weird combinations like The Godfather and a Goofy Movie together.

I have no idea. Netflix is killing my dvd purchases though, especially with tv shows on instant stream. I know I have at least 5, I just bought all of Stargate Atlantis the other day.

I have 93 DVDs (counting this as 1), and one Blu-ray (The Rocky Horror Picture Show).

Those with VHS, how does it feel to live in 1983? Just curious.

Bones

the better question is how do us who have to convert them to dvd because the title is either OOP or NIP on dvd. I am converting my folks entire collection that cant be repurchased on dvd to digital one tape at a time using a vcr-usb rig that plays them at 1x speed for good transfer.

Chibibar

hmmm.. over 900 DVDs (that is titles i.e. Box set of Season one of Castle = 1 DVDs)
Blu-Rays? around 50+

The same way it feels to realize you wasted all that money on 400+ DVDs that are now obsolete.

Or how does it feel to live in 1998?

I think thats a little harsh, technology is judged by the most readily available format. yes the world of D2D has arrived, but at the same time there is a large segment of NORTH AMERICA that still doesn't have high-speed internet, and wont for quite awhile to come.

EDIT/Clarification: I use NA as an example because, Personally I think of all the relatives and friends all over just this continent I have that wont be going to the next step for sometime. wither due to location or simple cost. I am saying its what VHS was to a lot of people when we had things like laserdisc(OH GOD)

#35

Jiarn

Personally I always felt that buying a DVD for a film you wouldn't watch at least 2x a year was a waste of money. Then again, that's just a personal opinion on why I don't buy more.

#36

Bones

Bones

I actually agree on that, the only reason I collect anime so obsessively is to have a legal copy and support an industry I enjoy, because unlike Hollywood, the American anime publishers do need fan support. at least thats what I believe.

I had a good VHS collection, and I bought a few DVDs. Maybe 10 at the most. And some of those were gifts. I got into netflix right out of the gate, and it seemed kind of like a waste of money to buy something. Especially since, like Jiarn says, I realized I never watched any of them anyway.

Also, wouldn't it be fairer to judge VHS by its endpoint, not it's beginning? More like how does it feel to be living in I don't know...2000? After all recording fidelity and read heads improved significantly over the years.

Holy poop, lol, you must be knee-deep all up in that sheeit. Then again, I can't talk, seeing as I've got hundreds of books ... I dunno about 900, though.

I think I have like 2 VHS tapes ... Time Bandits and Jackie Chan's First Strike. I actually bought them for quarters at booksales for a lark (and to remind me of my youth *tears up*).

holy crap man, how many single dvd's does that come out to...I am more amazed someone is dwarfing my collection finally.

now... about books.. we got 9 bookshelves full of books (manga and story books) magazines go into another rack.

Some of my VHS just aren't available on DVD or any other modern format. Hell, I'm still trying to get a Laserdisc copy of some movies just because the rights-holders are too tight-fisted to let us ever have a movie again. It's a damn shame that I can finally get a copy (DVD or Blu-Ray, even) of Night of the Creeps, but I still can't get Cold Blooded? Totally unfair, man.

And who says I spent money
