Some scientists claim you can't do more than 2 things at once.. http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20100415/sc_livescience/whywecantdo3thingsatonce (TLDR whole thing)

but I don't think they are correct..

can you:

pat your head
rub your tummy
tap your feet
hum or sing a song
or something else

All at the same time?

I can so do more than two things at once. Just for fun I just did all those things you had listed all while reading this thread.[/QUOTE]

That was actually the point of the thread, to see how many people he could get to do those things.

I know but I was bored enough that I did it anyways

actually those were just examples of what I had done proving the article wrong. You're welcome to come up with other examples?

I've played xbox while getting a blow job.... wait, that's just 2 things again.

Oh well, any excuse to tell that story, y'know?

You guys are defining "things" differently than they are. They are talking about tasks that require attention and planning while you guys are talking about making synchronized motor movements. Not exactly the same. In part it is a failure on how poorly they communicated this, though.

Oh. Well on that note, under circumstances that allow it, I can simultaneously serve up to 4 customers at work at the same time. I dunno if that's quite the same but it is hella efficient multitasking.

I can take care of two children, cook dinner, and look things up on the web at the same time.

Not all of those take concentration and cognitive work. This study is more like listening to a lecture that you need to remember, doing math equations and cooking dinner using a recipe.

Science has PROVEN several times that your brain can only handle so much before it ignores one or the other. My daughter gives me this crap all the time and it's FACT that you CAN'T multitask no matter how much you try and fool yourself.

Also, you aren't really doing all those tasks at the same time. You're pausing doing one to work on the other. When most people say their doing multiple things at once, they're really only rapidly switching between tasks.

How about

walking to work
Listening to an Audio Book
playing LoZ: LttP on my DS Lite
Walking to work is a reflex action and requires no thought. Listening to an audio book could but if you hit a particularly difficult part in LoZ: LttP I'll bet you couldn't tell me what was said on the audio book as your focus would have shifted.

Hell, I can't listen to a song I know the lyrics to and read at the same time, I end up concentrating on one or the other.. usually singing along.

That makes sense, Bowie. I am doing them within the same time frame, but not together at the same time.
