How to quit your current job on good terms.

Sooooo, the big moment is upon me. In August I begin my career as a college professor. I need to figure out a way to work in my two week notice at my current place and do so on good terms.

I figure, I want to give him a solid month to find a replacement for me (possibly allow me to train a replacement). What's the best way to go about it. Me leaving is really going to fuck my current boss over, as I'm heading up a number of projects.

Just sit him down and be straight with him. Say, "Joe, we need to talk. I just got an offer for a professorship in the fall. I will be accepting it. I want to make sure that I leave you with the proper SOPs etc for someone to take over my position, so I am giving you a bunch of notice."

Really in our field 2 weeks notice isn't acceptable, people need a month. That said if he reacts in any kind of negative way to your statement, fuck him. He needs to grow up if he thinks you would stay there when you have been offered a professorship.

I'd go with be straight with your boss, and give enough notice to allow 2 weeks + training time.

Yup. Let him know you love the job but this other position is your dream and you just can't pass it up. With enough notice they should be fine.
