Hurt Locker producer banned from Oscar night

Nicolas Chartier has been barred from the event after sending an e-mail to voters urging them to name his movie as best film over rival Avatar.

Academy rules prohibit the mailing of members to promote or disparage a film.

But should The Hurt Locker win best picture, Chartier will still receive his Oscar statuette at a later date.
Too bad, but rules are rules I guess. So there's no campaigning allowed in movies, eh? I was never familiar with this rule.

You can pimp yourself out all you want, but you can't say anything about the other films.

Had he just mentioned The Hurt Locker he'd have been fine.

It says promote or disparage. You can send out gifts to people and remind them of you (and thus your movie), though.

It is that he did not buy an ad in Variety. You just can't contact the voters directly. You have to use ad-space.

I hope he wins. Just to cut 5 mins off of the broadcast.

The promoting has been official but not enforced for years. People promote their stuff all the time and they just look away.

Yeah, I imagine that somehow sending emails the way he did "crossed the line" mysteriously.
