I've been looking for a more-or-less authentic chinese seal to go with my kung fu class, but they're hella expensive on the Internet. I was pretty sure that if I could talk to someone in China, I could get one much cheaper.

So, in the Secret Santa thread, I saw that Terrik is in China. I knew this before, because it's on his "location" tag, but I never thought of it until then for some reason. So I wrote to him...

A couple weeks later, and voila! Terrik is Awesome Day!

Neato! What does it say?

Neato! What does it say?

"You owe us 3 trillion dollars and your payment is overdue."

Aww..my own special day. Glad you got it ! :)

The stamp is read Top to bottom and right to left. It says Mei Han Gong Fu(kung fu)
In simplified it would look like

功美
夫汉

Mei(美)which means Beautiful/Good/Perfection
Han(汉) which refers to the Han people, which the Chinese people refer to themselves as.

And gong fu should be pretty self-explanatory ;)

That really is cool, how much do those stamps cost?

I'd just like to point out that "mei han" could also be translated as "beautiful man," so you basically have a stamp that says "Beautiful Man Kung Fu." :p

That really is quite cool though, and kudos to Terrik!

Sooo it doesn't mean "Stamped by another silly white person"

I am not going to post anything as I do not wish to be hurtful on this special day.

Also, Chakz, epic avatar.

Well yes, it can be used in a number of manners. 美国 (America) being one of them. It's used a lot in compound words like 美丽 which can also mean beautiful, 完美 which means 'perfection', 美观 meaning 'pleasing to the eye/artistic' and so on.

I think Bhamv's translation would be more accurate, but it could be translated a number of ways. This is what happens when you try to translate a name from a language into Chinese. England is 英国 (ying guo) because of the sound, and it would translate to "Hero Country" or mine, 史蒂夫 (shi di fu--for Steve) is History/fruit stem/man

Like 汉, as I said Han refers to the Han people, and its also used in a number of ways like 汉语 (han language) or to refer to the Han dynasty, or to refer to simply a man, especially if that person is Chinese. This is why when Chinese use something like igoogle translator for Chinese/English, you get some pretty freaky sentences.

Using Google Translate to translate the title of this thread into Chinese and back into English, I got "I declare that the "Terrik is a terrific" days!"

It's stuff like this that reassures me that, as a translator, I'm not going to be replaced by a machine quite yet.

Er I hope I didn't come off sounding like a jerk I was just teasing. I'd be happy to celebrate Terrik is awesome day. What do we do?

Kitty Sinatra

Well, if Guy Fawkes Day is any indication, we burn Terrik in effigy and set off fireworks.

This is interesting! Tell me more, grampa Terrik! How would you write "Han Solo". What other meanings could it have. Some funny translated forum handles?

Is it terrible that that was my first question as well?

My handle is already a word in most latin-root languages. I bet it would translate pretty easily. :)

When I see a white dude with a Chinese Character as a tattoo or decal on their car, I tell them it means "Silly Round-Eyes"

Terrik and/or bhamv3: Do you guys take translation requests? Nothing major, just a few words. Might make a pretty tat that doesn't read "I like soup."
Sure, I could handle the Traditional Chinese characters, and Terrik (if he's willing) could cover the Simplified Chinese.
