If Anything were to get me to immigrate to the US, it would be the Alamo Drafthouse.

If that theater was in my area I would use it exclusively due to this.

I drive 20-30 miles to go to the nearest drafthouse on a regular basis.

I ask out of ignorance but is there anything special about the theater? Is it a throwback to the classic theaters of years ago? Or is it one of the mega theaters?

I don't care. Their "sit down and shut up" policy is SO needed today. You want one of the major reasons why more people are staying away from the theater? Rude crowds who don't give a fuck about anyone but themselves are a big factor. That and the fact that movies kinda suck, aren't original and cost too much.

www.drafthouse.com see for yourself.

They have a lot of special screenings, show quote-a-longs, old classic movies, have feast food/drink pairings with some movies, all kinds of shit. There's only about ~10 in Texas (I think one opened in Virginia recently)

Charlie, that's pretty sweet. I would love it if a theater in our area showed classic movies. The place looks like it has great atmosphere. Dave, I agree with you. Their policy alone would get my ticket money. Nothing takes you out of the movie experience faster than a half dozen people in the crowd lighting up their phones in total darkness to check facebook updates or shoot a text. I've been lucky in the fact I haven't experienced too many people holding conversations during a movie. A couple of times someone's phone rang and they got up and left the theater during conversation. One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone kicks the back of the seat. It doesn't have to be directly behind you. They can be a few seats down and you can feel the vibration every time their foot hits it.

I love the Alamo Drafthouse, I try to go there whenever a movie comes out. The only time I don't is when they play the movie only in 3D, and even then I sometimes make exceptions.

Strange enough, someone is building a sort of "knock off" of the Alamo Drafthouse right behind my house, pretty much walking distance. I can only hope they are half as good as the normal drafthouses.

A local theater has taken the same policy. If someone complains about you using your phone, you're kicked out with no refund.

How do you find an usher?

There's a guy just outside on each side of the theatre. No one's actually in the theatre itself usually.

Oh, so you have to stand up, walk past everyone, go down or up the stairs, exit the theater and miss parts of the movie? Then come back inside and walk back to your seat?

At the Alamo, you just write it on an order piece of paper, and put it in the order line.

If they (or anyone) opened a theater like that in my area, I'd go every week.

Alamo Drafthouse, literally on the top 5 things I miss MOST about being in San Antonio.

Every experience was fantastic. I miss it, I miss the special screenings of all kinds of insane movies, I miss anime night, I miss Rocky Horror night, I miss Repo! night. I miss it completely.

My best friend is the master at beaning people in the head with M&M's when they are talking or texting in the theater.

Well I understand the appeal of the policy, I do sympathize with the woman. If I turned my phone on to try to get help getting back to my seat and ended up being kicked out, I'd be pissed off too.

If the aisle lighting is not enough for you to move around safely, call an usher to aid you. There's no need to turn on any sort of flashlight inside a theater - assuming, of course, that she wasn't just BS'ing about her reasons for having her phone shining in everyone's eyes. At least flashlights are directional.

Since aisle lighting is regulated by building codes, though, in terms of placement and brightness, then most people will do fine by it. If not, wait for a bright part of the movie to move around.

That's a trick I need to learn! I will have to remember to bring M&Ms with me next time.

She already had two warnings before she got kicked out. Tough noogies.
