I'll Judge Your Taste in Comics!

#1

ThatNickGuy

Just as the title says, give me your list of favourite comics and I'll judge it from 1-10. Graphic novels and series, preferably, but if you have a single issue to throw in, by all means; if you really want to put Archie meets The Punisher, then go nuts.

My list, in no particular order:
-Death, Funeral and Return of Superman (3 books, but it's one long epic)
-DMZ
-The Unwritten
-Chew
-Sleeper
-Kingdom Come
-Sandman
-JLA/Avengers
-Elephantmen
-Watchmen

EDIT: And because I can never help myself, I'll throw recommendations out based on what you mention. So, it's a judgement and a "If you like this..."

Man, I read like, no comics, actually.
Ultimate Spider-Man
Scott Pilgrim
The Boys
I'll add in the Walking Dead because I've read SOME of it and desperately want more.

And that's pretty much it. Unless I can add in Stratynsky's run on Amazing Spider-Man prior to Brand New Day

I, uh, don't read many comics, but I love Asterix! Plus The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I'd say Watchmen, but I'd feel like a giant tool because I only read it on account of the movie was coming out (it was made of rad-sauce, though!).

Oh, yeah, and I've read a lot of older Marvel Wolverine, because Wolverine is fucking crazy (motherucker jumps outta planes and shit).

---------- Post added at 10:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:12 PM ----------

Oh! Oh! I really enjoyed Persepolis ...

Shit, I need to get to a comic shop, don't I?

Checkster: Not too bad a list, man. If you like Ultimate Spidey, I definitely recommend Invincible or Firebreather. I just started reading The Boys and it's a hoot. Ever read Preacher or Hitman? That's by the same writer and it's his best work, even compared to The Boys. So yeah, not a bad list and it's not all mainstream Big Two, so we'll call it 7/10. We'll try again when you've read more. *grin*

Phil: You know, I've never read Asterix? And ain't nothing wrong with League. Anything by Alan Moore is given to be great. You should check out his ABC line of comics, especially Top Ten and Tom Strong. And nothing wrong with older Logan; I assume the Claremont stuff where he had him as "Patch" in Mandripor? Awesome stuff. We'll give a lower score, just for the little you've read, so...7/10. Eh, what the hell, you had Watchmen AND Persepolis in there, so 8/10.

I have only read comics that have had a movie.

Watchmen I completely adored.
Batman Year One, and the Long Halloween I really liked too.
Wanted and Kick-Ass were kind of stupid and I stopped reading them.
Scott Pilgrim I love, but haven't finished.
Sin City and V for Vendetta were both pretty solid/average.
I loved how dorky the first volume of Amazing Spider-Man trade paperback thing I got for Christmas was. Ultimate Spider-Man was pretty good. I have only read around the first...60 issues I think.

That's kind of an odd limit to put on yourself. That's like refusing to see any black & white movies. Or only seeing Japanese movies. Then again, there's a lot of stuff out there that's been made into a movie. I'm surprised that, given one of your favourite movies was originally a comic that you haven't read it. Road to Perdition? Also, Year One and Long Halloween haven't had a movie; inspiration for the Nolan Bat-films, but not by any means direct adaptation.

Wanted and Kick-Ass were, indeed, damn stupid, and probably some of the worst pieces of crap I've ever read. Funny how the movies are fun and entertaining, though.

Given your own silly limitation, I'll give it a 6/10.

Here's some recommendations for comics that have a movie, though: Persepolis, American Splendor, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (so VERY different from the crap movie), Whiteout, The Losers.

---------- Post added at 05:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:11 PM ----------

Amy: Holy crap, that's a lot of stuff I've never read. But you've got Sandman, Akira and Days of Future Past, so we'll say 7/10. Might be higher if I'd read some of that. Keep meaning to check out Stranger in Paradise.

The only one on there that I didn't dig was The Maxx. The art is spectacular, but it was just too frigging weird for my tastes.

Is this a parody of Charlie's topic? I enjoy satire.

I haven't read enough in the way of graphic novels and I can count the two I read and didn't love on one hand: Sin City and Fables.

Otherwise, I read and loved:

The Sandman
Watchmen
Promethea
Lucifer
The Dark Knight Returns

We'll give ya 8/10 for some top notch stuff, Esc. I'm surprised, though, that you enjoy satire but didn't enjoy Sin City; it's meant to be a parody of film/pulp noir. I've yet to read Lucifer, but not for a lack of interest.

Also, if you dug Promethea, you might dig The Maxx. It's got that same, strange, otherworldly stuff going on. You seem to like the more literary stuff, like Sandman and Watchmen. AND you have a lto of Vertigo listed. Have you tried The Unwritten? Second volume of it just came out last week. :D

It isn't really a silly limitation I'm putting on myself, it's just how it shook out looking back at what I've read. I actually read Scott Pilgrim before the movie came out.

Let's see... Here's what I've been reading lately:

- Top Ten (Hill Street Blues meets City of Heroes)
- Smax (Side Story of Top Ten)
- The Walking Dead (Best Zombie comic on the market. Probably best B & W Comic)
- Powergirl (Last Years 12, not this years. Last year was downright hilarious and the art was beautiful. This year is kinda bland so far.)
- Chew (My contender for best indie comic, after The Walking Dead)
- Runaways (I hope they start this up again soon)
- Buffy Season 8 (it got a little weird after awhile, but it started out great)
- Gotham City Sirens (Full of nods to the past and it treats all of the women with the respect and dignity they deserve)
- Superman & Shazam: First Thunder (Really sets the dynamic for the two strongest heroes in DC. Plus when Superman finds out who Captain Marvel is and what he does about it was... amazing)
- PS238 (Best young Superhero series on the market. Delightfully funny.)
- Batman: No Man's Land (Probably the best Batman series, IMO)

Was reading scanlations of Highschool of the Dead but it got licensed so the trans group stopped. Probably going to be months before the official version catches up to the scanlation too. Need to get started on Scott Pilgrim now.

North_Ranger

Asterix
Calvin and Hobbes
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Donald Duck as drawn by Carl Barks and Don Rosa
Beetle Bailey
Order of the Stick
Nodwick
Tintin
Zits
Garfield (the old ones; the new ones, not so much)
Bone
Valérian by Jean-Claude Mézières
Certain works of Milo Manara (Indian Summer, Gulliveriana) and Vittorio Giardino (Little Ego)

I loved the Sin City movie--I read volumes 5 and 6, which are supposed to be of the worse volumes. However I wasn't going to pretend I loved the comic just because of the movie or pretend I'd read the volumes present in the movie even if the movies are supposed to be shot-for-panel essentially.

You really should read Lucifer if you enjoyed The Sandman.

And I've been wanting to check out The Maxx at some point since I heard of it in college. Never heard of The Unwritten--I'll look into it.

Ash: Great list, man. Great list. Have you read the one-shot Top Ten graphic novel, The Forty Niners? Written by Alan Moore, as well. Though, to be honest, don't go any further than vol. 1-2, Smax and Forty Niners. I haven't read them, but I hear the other stuff (not by Moore) isn't even close to as good. You should check out his other ABC stuff, too, especially Tom Strong. Can't argue with you on Buffy. I don't like the direction they're taking with Twilight and his reveal. And yeah, Chew is probably, hands down, one of the best damn comics out there right now. Along with The Unwritten, of course. *grin* 9/10 for being a wide, ecclectic list.

North: Lotsa webcomics there and there ain't nothing wrong with that. If you like Bone, might I suggest Smith's latest series, Rasl? I haven't picked it up yet, but I hear it's a lot more adult and grown-up than Bone. If you want something more along the lines of Bone, though, there's a great fantasy series that's got two books out so far called Amulet. I also notice a strong inclination towards fantasy in there, so I'll just throw in a recommendation for Northlanders, while I'm at it. 8/10 for some good picks.

Esc: Just thought of another Alan Moore Vertigo book you'd probably dig the hell out of: his run on Swamp Thing. Seriously, check that the hell out.

Do they just sell it as Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing or do I have to hunt through Swamp Thing archives? Because I've been wanting to read that since I read Watchmen, but it's never in any book stores.

They sell Alan Moore's Swamp Thing in its oown volumes. You won't have to hunt through various archives for them.

In fact, they've started re-releasing them in hardcover. I think they're up the third (of six) volumes so far. Definitely two. My one complaint about them is the first volume of the original trades had this amazing introduction by Moore, discussing not just the history of Swamp Thing and everything that occured right up to the beginning of his run, but about horror comics in general. Damn crying shame they left it out.

It's been about 10 years since I purchased a comic book, but the last series I collected was:

Gen13

I collected the mini-limited series first, then the syndicated comics for about 30 issues.

Why? Roxy, Caitlin and Rainmaker. Obviously.

#30

MindDetective

MindDetective

Y: The Last Man
Fables
Jack of Fables (though I'm losing interest. I intend to check out the new spin off.)
Flight
Ex Machina (though I'm way behind)
Walking Dead (again, waaaaay behind.)

I used to love superhero comics and now I can barely stand them. The status quo and the constant push to maintain it kill any respectable storytelling, in my opinion.

I'd probably recommend Gotham City Sirens then. It's fun, tells the story of Gotham from a different perspective than usual, and most of what goes on doesn't concern the rest of the DCU at large. This means they can do odd stuff, like bring back Jokey (Joker's Silver Age Sidekick) to harass Harley Quinn or have Poison Ivy have to deal with a love obsessed stalker. It's more... personal to each of the three main characters and it works very well.

ugh. i read too many fucking comics, but shit, fuck it, off the top of my head:

All-star Super Man - already listed many times here, no explanation
Super-villian team Up - Dooooooooooom! DOOM!!! (My top character ever, and his shit from this era is fucking fantastic. "Dreams, like mirrors, exist to be smashed!!!" - classic)
Preacher - i have to tell you fuckers this is good?
Sandman - we all know it, i want to feel goo about knowing it too!
Hitman - fuck you, it is awesome
Hellblazer - the earlier years were fantastic
Fables
Punisher (the ennis run)
Infinite Crisis - yeah, thats fucking right. i went there. I fucking loved this crossover. here is the next part...Superboy Prime emerged as one of my favorite characters! The shithead is awesome, and I cannot get enough of the guy. I even loved the legion books in final crisis! And his bitching in blackest night about comics, i thought it was great! they bring this guy back anywhere, and I am there. So fuck all ya haters!
Sinestro Corps War - yuuuuuuup
Batman - Killing Joke
Venom - Lethal protector - christ, this is fucking terrible. I mean...jesus. but here it is. the first run of something I got as a youngin, and it still hold a place in the cockles of my fucking heart. Still own the shitty asa books somewhere, too. How this got me to reading comics, I will never know.
Scott pilgrim. reading it since the first book hit, loved it right on through. fun and hilarious. great stuff.

there is more, but fuck it.
