Alright Halforumites, I seek your mighty tech knowledge.
Internet Explorer isn't working for me right now.
Details:
I somehow managed to get a virus that blue-screened me on boot-up, so I had to repair system files via an XP install CD.
That fixed that, but the virus was still there, so I had to run Malware Bytes which took care of that and various other little things that were hiding in my computer.
Now, however, Internet Explorer isn't working. I tried resetting to manufacturer's defaults, I tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling, and so far nothing is working. It just says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" as if it weren't connected to the internet, but the internet is indeed working. (I'm using it on Firefox right now!)
So, any ideas? I haven't been able to find any help on Google.
A lot of places have been saying I need to reinstall updates after repairing XP, but I either did that already, or I can't find where to get them all. Plus, IE7 worked right off the CD when I first installed, I don't see why this wouldn't work.
So any help is appreciated.
And I don't wanna hear any "IE sucks! Use Firefox!" That's not what this thread is about. -_-

Windows sucks! Use Linux!
no . . . um, would you be averse to simply doing a clean reinstall?
I think. To the best of my knowledge I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it. But it hangs on the update and says it cannot be successfully updated. But it is installed. Or something. I don't know.
This is a little more confusing than it needs to be.

When you reinstalled XP, did you do a clean install, or a repair instillation. It sounds like your system was pretty infested, so I'd recommend backing up your stuff and doing a full format of the hard drive and reinstalling.
In other words...
Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

It actually wasn't that bad. But yeah, I just did a repair install.
Right now everything is working perfectly except for IE.
I completely uninstalled it, then reinstalled it, and it just acts like it can't connect to the internet or something. I can't find anything to help me with this.
I'd like to try to find a solution that doesn't involve nuking it from orbit, honestly.

At this points, I refuse to give any IE help. Go use Chrome, Opera, Safari or Firefox.

There's probably something still on your system. Either that or something with IE is hosed. I don't know that you can even completely uninstall IE anymore.
If you haven't run Malware Bytes in safe mode yet, do it. I've had it where Malware bytes and AVG cleans everything, but as soon as I fire up IE no pages would load until I restarted. By then the virus was back again. Doing a clean install can be a pain in the ass, but usually it's the best thing to do.

Check the website address that is coming up. If you are still on ie7, the first page that comes up after an install leads to a broken page.
if that is the case you will need to run a regedit to repair the issue.

I would also suggest running ComboFix. It does a good job fixing some files corrputed by various viruses, especially the networking files used by IE.
Glad it helped. It's been very helpful in the past fixing other friends' computers. It targets restoring some of the files Windows actually uses for networking. I would also be willing to bet you couldn't get to shared folders and a couple other networking options. Since IE is so coupled with Windows, it shares those files unlike other browses that bring their own stuff to the table.

I found the fix to your issue along with any other ones to happen in the future.
