The GF has hinted that she'd like an Ipod for Christmas (ease of use + alot of accessories made directly for it; speakers/transmitters for car radio/etc) but I was wondering if I should just spend a bit more and get her an Itouch. They're pretty much the same thing aren't they?

Any owners want to chime in with some advice?

Edit: Important question: Can either one play MP3s that are NOT from iTunes without "cracking" them?

For me, the best part of my iPod is that all my music fits on it.

So I'd say if her music library can't fit on the Touch, go with the Classic iPod. Otherwise, spend what you're willing to spend.

We have both.

iToouch allows to use apps and "online" stuff as long you have WiFi access (pretty much all functions except the phone) the downside limit to like 8 and 16GB model.

iPod on the other hand has a MUCH larger space (160GB) you can download movies, videos, music and such. It is very nice (we only have the 80GB model)

Well she's going to be graduating next year as a teacher, I thought the apps thing could help her in some ways.

Also, she doesn't have "thousands" of songs, maybe a few hundred at a time.

If that is the case, she is perfect for the itouch.

Since my ipod died a few weeks ago (and its driving me nuts not to have in the car) I am considering getting a touch as a replacement. This size limit sucks, but then again, 16gb is still quite a bit of music and books.

Oh, as to your question: the iPod isn't restricted at all to songs from iTunes.

My entire library is ripped from my CD collection.

It can't play WMP files, unfortunately, and I find that the video filetypes are a little restricting - or I think I would if I used it for that.

Yeah, and you can use other things to move mp3s over. Hell, I use winampo for my transfer of songs on my old ipod, and my roomate uses the same thing for his itouch

16gb is over 10,000 songs give or take? Oh yeah that defintely suits her.

As long she has good Wifi she can go on the web with it too. The apps stuff is nice (I do have an iPhone now woot! only 3G tho not 3GS) and loving it. If she doesn't need the phone function, then iTouch is a good way to go.

only a hundred songs or so? that should be plenty.

Edit: note: you can order from Apple site and have it engrave too (my boss did that for her daughter)

Go with the touch. The wifi alone makes it worth it.

holy snap. It has gotten bigger last I check (32 was the largest I think)

btw, there is a cool app I have on my phone call "Free Wifi" which basically can local free wifi in your area it is awesome.

Is there anything I should be wary about if I want to buy a 32gb version off Craigslist, other than the "omg be careful, you might get stabbed!" warnings?

I'd say go with the iPod touch, It can be used for virtually anything. For example, I use it as a remote mouse via home network for my computer when it's hooked to the widescreen TV, I also used it regularly in my job for a calculator, appointment book, etc... It's really the difference between getting a music player, and getting a palm pilot that also plays music.

Just as an FYI, if it's an app that uses the GPS of the iPhone, it will NOT work on the iPod Touch. The GPS is a part of the iPhone that uses cell towers to triangulate position.

That is pretty much what I am going to do...get one o0f cl. just make sure it works when you get it, and you will be fine.

Yeah, you should be fine getting a used one, with iTunes, you can just reformat the thing and it's all good.

Question: Is it possible to realize if you've purchased a "jailbroken" iTouch? I'd hate for that hacking bullshit to happen and not even realize it.

oh yea.... I forgot about that part I'm sure she can get a list somewhere and there is an app for it.

Shego: I notice that the larger one (32 and 64) have voice. I bet those are the S series. basically higher processor power and well..... voice activate option.

Even if it is jailbroken, if you reformat it with the iTunes software, it will un-jailbreak it.

I would go with the touch, I got a 120gb classic last generation because the most space the touch had was 16gb and I have 20+ gigs of music and 20+ gigs of movie/video so that didn't work for me. But the next one I get will be a touch for sure.

iTunes has a button to pretty much reformat and restore back to factory settings (even jailbreak) which is nice.

I love my iPod touch. It's first gen, 32 gigs. First gen just means first run, then you have the 2nd which is the 2nd run and so far thats it. I would get a second gen iPod touch. Faster processor, internal mic, etc.

Are different Gens priced differently if I look for them used? What are the big differences in generation?

They first gen are probably cheaper. However they are going to have slower processors so as far as being able to use higher end apps and such they are going to be slower in general.

That's a little trickier. Easiest way is to get a size that is not available in the previous generation. Unfortunately 2nd and 3rd generation (and first?) have the exact same casing.

Itouch myPod.

My iPod is uncracked and I just toss whatever mp3 or properly formatted mp4 I want on to it. I suggest turning off syncing though unless you plan on keeping everything on the iPod/iTouch on the PC you're syncing with.

Big definitive post coming up here...

-At current quality levels (256kb/s), you get an average of about 120songs/GB.

-iPod Classic holds 160GB but contains mechanical parts. Lots of storage but more sensitive to vibration/handling/temperature.

-Newest iPod Nano comes in 8/16GB and has an internal speaker and a video camera as well as the ability to tune into FM radio.

You sound like you're most interested in the iPod Touch. Here are the rest of the facts.

-1st generation - available in 8/16/32GB, essentially an iPhone with no phone, BlueTooth nor camera. Ships with version 1 OS, some later models shipped with additional apps (Mail, etc). Will charge with FireWire/USB.

-2nd generation - available in 8/16/32GB, increases raw processor speed 33%, adds external volume controls and an internal speaker, supports Nike+ and audio-in with proper accessories (handy for Skype). Ships with version 2 OS. Updating this model to version 3 OS also enables BlueTooth functionality. Will charge with USB only.

-3rd generation - available ONLY in 32/64GB, all of the above plus Voice Control and Voiceover (accessibility features) and controllable from headset remote. Completely redesigned (presumably even faster) processor and graphics just like the iPhone 3Gs (which would mean 2x the RAM, too). Ships with version 3 OS. Will charge with USB only.

Other important facts:

-All iPods will play MP3s anywhere from 8-320kb/s. And while iPods will not play WMA files, the Windows version of iTunes will convert your non-DRM'd WMAs into AAC, which then can be loaded onto an iPod.

-Reformatting an iPod will remove any illicit software from that iPod, but it will not repair any damage already done by driving components (like WiFi) past their 'normal' limits, etc.

-The iPhone 3G and 3Gs use "aGPS" (WiFi and cell tower triangulation) to get reasonably close to your current location, but they then use a dedicated GPS chip to pinpoint your exact location after the initial guesstimate.
