Charlie Don't Surf

Hi Halforums. I like you. I am going to go "into the well" as the saying goes, and answer any of your questions or poll ideas or anything really honestly and quickly. I am "partying" and watching the film "Boogie Nights" this is one of my favorite movies ever made.

BUT I will still answer whatever you have truthfully and what not.

FUCK Boogie Nights might have the best fucking soundtrack ever.

I can't believe Mark Wahlberg gave this performance AUGH it's so good.

Okay I'm back. I have a confession, earlier when I said "partying" I really meant "drinking a fuckload of whiskey"

Forrest Gump is a funny movie but it ain't that fuckin good man. It's funny since it is like a stupid pastiche of the 1900s

Best soundtrack of all time?

Psh. Son, you clearly never listened to the animated Transformers movie soundtrack.

#5

I'm too drunk to figure out the difference betwixt soundtrack and score BUT

I have a fact for you

Boogie Nights contains the same song as the Transformers "The Touch" sung by "Marky" Mark Wahlberg.

Denzel Washington or Samuel L. Jackson - who's the better actor?

#7

Charlie Don't Surf

Charlie Don't Surf

Denzel Washington or Samuel L. Jackson - who's the better actor?
That's actually a really hard one. I think Denzel has the better singular performance in "Training Day", but Sam Jackson might have the better career total all added up. Hmm. I guess I have to go with Denzel. Since I just like. BAM the first impression is Denzel's fucking amazing performance in Training Day. Sam Jackson has a lot of good performances, don't get me wrong. But nothing that is just as mindblowing as Training Day.

So I'm going Denzel. I saw Safe House recently and I really liked Denzel, but the script didn't service him as much as I would have liked.

Oh, I know. But it also has other awesome 80's hair hand music, too.

Michael Bay calls you. He wants you to help him write a script of his new movie: "'Mericaboomboomshblamhotbodyairplanegoeswhooooshniccage!"

What do you do? Answer carefully here.

I dunno if I've said this or if this has been inferred as such by me being a pompous jackass

BUT

I am an aspiring screenwriter. I would absolutlely write a movie for mr. bay and tell him what a genius he is and make it exactly how he likes it to get my foot in the door. Fuck, I would love to get the carte blanche to make an absolutely ludicrous action sequence that I know would get backed up by the biggest studio possible.

I have a few like. Half-finished screenplays I need to hunker down and finish. I would consider sharing them even though they're really bad and like, I would get made fun of. That's okay, since it's like. The only way to get better is to keep trying.

For all the shit I've talked about Transformers 1/2, I actually pretty much respect Michael Bay. He has a vision and hef cuking does it. He gets it done. He makes his dreams a reality and does exactly what he wants to every day of his life. And I respect that. I actually enjoyed Transformers 3. I think his Pain & Gain movie is going to be fun as hell.

Espy

The correct answer was: "Yes sir Mr. Bay, I will be right over and leave my dictionary and thesaurus at home."

Lets go to the judges... and they say based on your level of drunkenness you got it! Thats 500 points for Team Charlie.

Charlie, you'd better answer yes on this one. Or at least have it in your top five. Otherwise you will have lost all credibility and be banished to the Michael Bay Zone.

Well, you answered while I was typing and you passed.

Die Hard is a much, much better action movie. You could argue that First Blood makes for a better drama, but not as an action film.

EDIT: Yes, Juski, really.

Do explain the difference. Because if it's about "epic scale of badassery and explosions" I'm going to give it to Expendables.

First Blood has a deeper dramatic impact via its storyline. Die Hard has better action scenes, more entertaining action elements, and so on. The Expendables couldn't hold a candle to either film.

#32

Shegokigo

Expendables didn't have more dramatic impact than First Blood but it definitely has better action scenes, action elements and fun cast than Die Hard.

Leading off - I have no idea why I got fixated on "at first blush" last night as a phrase

What is the greatest movie ever made starring Elizabeth Taylor.

(You may not say the Flintstones)
I have never seen Elizabeth Taylor in a movie, only in The Simpsons and Captain Planet
What is your favorite comedy of all time? What makes it stand out?
Keeping with the shoot from the hip thing - the first thing that sprung to mind was Groundhog Day. It's just the best of the 80s, Bill Murray's best performance ever in a nearly impossible high-concept premise plus the best of the 80s creative writing/directing teams. I also boggle at how well it turned out with the whole Bill Murray hating everyone angle of it.

What is your opinion on stage musicals being converted to films? I ask because Les Miserables is coming out soon.
I haven't seen many stage musicals. I support any source of inspiration for movies, though. I do like them since it gives me a chance to see them/bring them to a larger audience.

Expendables didn't have more dramatic impact than First Blood but it definitely has better action scenes, action elements and fun cast than Die Hard.
lol and you say I have opinions that make it hard to take me seriously

Great movie, but from the 90s, '93 to be precise. You probably meant Ghostbusters while mentioning best comedy in the 80s along with Bill Murray.
Also the 80s had Back to the Future.

#39

Charlie Don't Surf

Charlie Don't Surf

I meant it more of - like, Bill Murray and the writer/director (Ramis) were a product/ got big in the 80s, and Groundhog Day was the peak of their powers.

Then define what makes an action movie "better" than another. I didn't say it was a better movie, I said it had better action scenes, better action elements and a bigger, more fun cast. I never said "better than Die Hard".

#41

ElJuski

Expendables was fun, cheesy, but essentially expendable, as all it is is a 80's/90's action fan's wet dream of a cast come true. Pretty lousy everything else, though. I'd take some of the classic 90's Van Damme or Stallone over that movie any day (doesn't mean I didn't have a blast at the theater).

Actually, considering Van Damme and Stallone films, I take my original First Blood answer back, and now change it to Sudden Death. Nothing tops beating the shit out of a penguin.

the best part of that scene, besides the penguin costume, is the fact that every single cooking appliance is turned on at full blast for no reason.

It was 1983 when Mark Wahlberg was recording The Touch but the song wasn't written until 1986 for the Transformers movie by Stan Bush.

Didn't realize it was an insult to begin with. Expendables is only as good as its awful, manic ancestors. What's rose-tinted about that, or liking the audacious dumbassery of said predecessors, isn't really showing some sort of nostalgia.

#53

Steve

I enjoyed The Expendables, First Blood and Die Hard but I'd have to give Die Hard the edge in my book. Loved Hans and his band of terrorists. And there were so many "how the hell is John going to get out of this" from the roof top explosion while running from FBI shooters to meeting Hans for the first time and Hans coming off as a hostage. The Expendables was an epic of awesomeness. So many action star packed into a film that was very enjoyable and a huge adrenaline rush. As far as First Blood, I'd choose Rambo over it for nothing more than the sniper scene and Rambo cutting people in half with the gun on the jeep. And my favorite scene was on the river when he had to kill the pirates and screamed "they would have raped her a hundred times and cut of her head!" Ah. . . they are like my children. I can't pick favorites.

I'd say Die Hard had the better action sequences because they were more iconic. We all remember the big rooftop explosion and Willis rappelling down via the hose. We all remember the awesome bit with the gun taped to his back. There's a lot of great, memorable action sequences that have stuck with me through the ages, and those are among the top.

Expendables? I remember the bit with the dude shooting from the plane and blowing up the docks. That's pretty much it.
