Maybe his daughter has some disease where you don't age, and the reason he is so good at making pancakes for her is that he's been doing it for twenty years?

Maybe he had a motorcycle accident and suffered brain damage, and now the only thing he can do is make pancakes like some sort of breakfast savant?

What if he's dying of pancreatic cancer and, being a world famous pancake chef, pancakes are the only legacy he knows how to leave for his daughter?
