Is meant to happen on May 30. Is this a reliable date? I've seen it on a few web sites including Future Shop.

Amazon confirmed that mine will be delivered that day, so I assume yes.

I should take the day off work.

It's reliable ... in America. Don't know about your cold kingdom. :p

We have it pre-ordered. Gamestop says there's some special item Nintendo's doing. Not sure if that's true, but I'll find out on May 30.

They finally have a way to fight back against that goddamn blue shell.

According to this, if you have a Club Nintendo account and register Mario Kart 8 before July 31st, you can download one of four games free.

Super Mario Bros. U
Pikmin 3
LOZ: Windwaker HD
Wii U party

Pretty sweet deal for those of us who were going to get it anyways!

Definitely great for people getting the new bundle. For $330, you get Wii U deluxe set, plus a wiimote and steering wheel, Mario Kart 8, and another game of those listed above.

Yep, between Mario Kart, the bonus game, Super Smash coming out this year, and some of the GBA games in the WIi u store (though I'd perfer these on the 3ds store), it's finally enough to make the Wii U to worth it.

Allegedly Nintendo is having a hard time making the 3DS process emulation of GBA games and having the 3DS's other functions active (internet, restore points, etc).

Considering the 3DS can run N64 and Wii games, and emulation programs are really small and simple, I'm thinking that's a crock of shit and Nintendo honestly thinks the GBA titles will make a difference. As a recent press release said they're going to be really gearing stuff for the 3DS since there are over 43 million of them sold so far, I'm hoping they'll change their minds.

I tried it, but didn't care for it. My wife loves it and kept it for future use--now it's paying off.

I used the classic controller. I was awful with that wheel. Now my friend's son on the other hand is awesome with it.

#16

Hailey Knight

So, Nintendo decided not to make good use of the gamepad for this. It won't allow player 1 on gamepad screen, player 2 on TV. Won't do five players. Won't do items stuff. It's pretty useless unless you want to play Mario Kart 8 alone while someone else uses the TV for otherwise--I call that Mario Kart 7 on my 3DS.

This isn't going to dissuade me from buying the game, but it's disappointing that Nintendo can't take advantage of their own useful apparatus. 3DS games constantly make use of the touch screen, so why not the Wii U? And why should 3rd party developers be expected to make use of the gamepad if even the makers of the gamepad won't do so?

#17

E

Eliwood

You can play a demo of the game at Gamestop this weekend, May 17th and 18th: http://www.gamestop.com/gs/landing/events/Mario_Kart_8_TestDrive/default.aspx It's only from 12 - 4pm both days, so I don't know if I'd really want to go, might be crowded.

And yeah the only game in the Club Nintendo promotion that I don't already own is Wii Party U. I have played it before though, and it's nothing special--really only worth getting for the bundled controller, which you don't get in this CN promo.

#18

Hailey Knight

Maybe get a code for one of the other games and eBay it?

Yeah that's probably what I'll do, since I know Wii Party U will just be wasted space if I downloaded it.

This game's Highlights Reel is intent on making everyone hate each other. Don't know where that shell came from? After the race, find out it came from the person sitting next to you! Can't deny it anymore.

Mario Kart 8 wants to rival Mario Party in instigating.

Makes sense. Mario Party 9 was all about chance and having all players travel together, with mini-stars doled out almost in a way to make sure no one gets neglected. I guess they felt Mario Kart was the franchise to take up the friend-hating mantle.

#30

Dei

I'm pretty sure there are still plenty of ways to invoke friend/family hate in Mario Party. I wish I had more control over what the highlight reel shows though.

The program does a pretty good job of catching when players mess with each other, but yeah, there were a couple races where it didn't know what to do, so it just showed Peach driving at random spots with nothing happening.

#34

Reverent-one

Reverent-one

And so Mario Kart continues it's trend of having a battle mode that fails to live up the N64 version. It's really jarring this time though, because they got pretty much everything right...except that they used actual race tracks for all the battle maps. I know one of my complaints in previous games was that the battle maps were too small and exposed, but talk about over compensating. They were porting the races tracks from previous games anyway, if they had just taken one or two of the N64 battle maps instead, I would have been so happy.

Driver matters, but you can alleviate pros and cons based on cart. For me, I've found that a heavy driver on a bicycle is a good balance once I learned how to use the bikes. I'm still a little clumsy, but I'm making it work.

I should probably ban my wife too :p. She's started blaming the controller, so she moved from Wiimote and wheel to nunchuk, and then from nunchuk to swapping me for the gamepad. I don't know if she's going to bounce back to anything or if I need to invest in a Wii U classic controller.

I think it's funny how much little kids (in my experience) love the wheel even though it makes the game so much harder.

I'm gonna try it tonight and see how I do. I'd really like to avoid spending $50 on a Wii U Pro controller for use with just one game.[DOUBLEPOST=1401740845,1401740425][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yeah, but then you're just using the D-pad, which isn't great either. Certainly was a mess for Smash Bros Brawl.

I'm torn as to which game to get as the free one. I already have Zelda, so the choices are: Pikmin3, Mario, or Wii Party U. My wife and I are debating which would be best to play with our kids (4 and 7).

Pikmin 3 is cute, but can be pretty slow for younger kids. Plus, the boss fights can be pretty tricky.

Mario - you just can't go wrong. So many of us came up on Mario. DO IT.

Wii Party U - It'll get repetitive...

Who's your arch nemesis in MK8? Mine is Toad. He's usually the one who's right in front of me or riding my ass. Twiggy's is Wario.

We got a pretty decent Luigi death stare... and when we watched it in slo-mo, we also backtracked to watch it again, and found a super creepy noise to go with the stare:

My wife was ready to snap the disc in half because the comp characters kept trouncing her. We played some 150 cc, where this trend continued, and then brought it back to 100 cc, and she started to do better.

Rosalina is a machine. I used Pink Gold Peach until I unlocked her and have started using The Prancer with wood or sponge wheels. Doesn't matter. Sarah will beat me every time. I just try to secure her victory at this point rather than beat her.

Oh God this is so fun. I'm still unlocking characters/parts, but I've cleared 50cc and am working on 100. I'm really liking Ludwig on a cycle, though Iggy in a kart is pretty fun too. I mainly prefer Ludwig as my middleweight and Rosalina as my heavy. Haven't tried any light characters yet.

Also, the good ol' frustration of being in first and every fucking weapon hitting you at the same time is still here. BLUE SHELL'D GREEN SHELL'D FIREBALL'D RED SHELL'D KNOCKED OFF THE TRACK oh now you're in 8th with no coins tough luck.

Who's your arch nemesis in MK8? Mine is Toad. He's usually the one who's right in front of me or riding my ass. Twiggy's is Wario.

For the most part it seems like Baby Mario is the one that's always in second when I'm playing, and always seems to have a damn Red Shell when I'm taking a hairpin/90 degree turn.

#70

linglingface

linglingface

I've really taken to super light characters on super small vehicles now. Toadette or the babies on the scooter and button-type wheels with almost maxed out acceleration and handling are stuuuupid fast. It's just terrifying when someone comes to punt you off of the course!

#71

I am convinced Rose Gold Peach is the T1000. She is fucking relentless once she gets into second place.

I'm pretty settled on Ludwig/cycle as my main so far, though I might play around a bit more.

Since my wife and I have gotten set on using princesses on motorbikes, it seems at least one other princess is set to the top ranks. Often it's Peach, but sometimes it will be Pink Gold Peach or Baby Peach.

#73

Shawn

Shawn

I'm very much enjoying this game.

We had a friend over to play with us the other night. He's pretty talented. What I like about the game in that regard is it doesn't fix what isn't broken, meaning that pretty much anyone who's played a variation of Mario Kart in the past can pick this one up and play it like he's been playing for years. It's not overly complicated, but it is absolutely fun as hell.
My friend was pretty much dominating us in the races. I could get a close second, but he was usually able to keep a good distance ahead of me.

There was one time though that counts as one of my favorite MK moments. On the revamped Cheap Cheap Beach stage I fell behind several places, with my friend in the lead. It was the last lap and I was pretty much screwed. Suddenly I picked up the three mushroom boosts. It certainly helped close the gap, but I was still behind a few spots. Then I picked up another three mushroom boosts. Got me right behind my friend. My last item pickup was a single mushroom boost. I waited until the final paraglide jump to use it. Passed him at the last second to win the race. Glorious.

As my 'congratulations on being employed' present, I caved and we got the WiiU (w/MK8 ofcourse).
I cleared most of the GP's on 50 and 100 w/3 stars first time.
Now on 150... not so much. The game is totally fun though. I'm also starting to try and beat ghosts in the time trials. That's going to take a while.

Trying to decide if I want to 3 star 100cc or just dive right into 150.

I've pretty much settled on Ludwig and Rosalina as my drivers, but I'm still opening parts so that's up in the air. Tried a few light drivers and just don't care for the playstyle. They feel way too slow.

When my wife and I first discovered online Mario Kart on the Wii, we were taken aback by how assholish everyone was.

For this one, we've been treating each other like crap every race offline, so when we go online, we're the new assholes. And we win.

I was surprised how much harsher the AI was on 100, but at 150 they're downright rude!

Considering each is 3 characters and 8 courses, my guess would be $9.99 for each pack.

November seems like good timing, but May 2015 seems weird. Animal Crossing New Leaf will be nearly two years old by then for it to have such an Animal Crossing focus. That said, for Mario Kart 8 itself it's good timing since that game will have been out a year then and it'll be a good reason for people who have lulled to fire it up again.

Only course I didn't care for was New Bowser City, but it handled smoother than it does on 3DS. Everything else was great. Big Blue was fantastic. And this was my first chance to use my Mega Man Amiibo as a racer, so that was cool too.

If they added actual battle maps, I'd agree. But like most of the recent MK games, the battle mode is still subpar.
