If I delete my copy of Mass Effect from my HD, am I going to lose all my saves even though they are in a different directory? I kinda want to say them for when I finally get ME2. It's the steam copy, if that helps.

I don't know the answer to your question, but just to be safe, you could back up your save files to another location first before uninstalling ME1. I know the save files can be safely transferred to another location, another hard disk, another computer, or even transferred over the Internet and still work perfectly.

Just copy them out of the save directory to be sure.

Unless it's different for the Steam version of ME 1 than it is for the steam version of ME2, the save files should be the Bioware folder in your My documents folder. I don't even think it gives you the option to remove them when you uninstall it.
Just to rest your mind at ease, my ME 1 save games were on a completely separate hard drive, on which I'd uninstalled the game, when I installed ME2 and my save games imported just fine.
