I'm looking at setting up a message forum for my local Makerspace. I'm looking for something that is easy to set up and maintain. They already use Digital Ocean as the host for their website, so I assume the message forum software would end up on its own minimal performance droplet.
Does anyone have any suggestions for software, or the approach in general? I had someone suggest Vanilla forums, but that appears to no longer be updated.

I take it you are trying for free, yes? I'd probably go with phpBB in that case.
If you’re planning on having only a few to a few hundred people you can get away with that and go daddy. If you unexpectedly get a lot more in a short time that could cause issues. Trust me on this one.
