Miami Vice

RocketGirl

I was raised by hippie pacifists who tried (in vain) to keep me from violence in fiction...which is odd, since they had no problem with me watching Star Wars. But just about everything else was verboten.

In particular on their list was Miami Vice. Couldn't tell you why, but then, I'm not sure they could have either; most of their decisions seemed based more on assumption than anything else.

So...I just got my hands on the first season; I'm about nine episodes in. And let me just say...GAWDS, but I miss the 80s! Heh.

Not really sure what else to say about the show; after two decades of build-up, it's kind of a disappointment...but at the same time, I'm glad to finally know what the big deal was. And to finally understand Grand Theft Auto: Vice City... :)

Change that to "devout Christians" and I hear ya.

Miami Vice is awesome. Michael Mann is one of my favorite moving pictures makers. His 00's remake/movie isn't perfect, but I like it a great deal too.

I have absolutely no desire to see that. Most of these remakes tend to nostril-rape my childhood, rather than honor the memory of a beloved bit of entertainment-nostalgia. They're usually extremely different in style, look, or mood to the point where they might as well have made something new and original.

It's made by the same exact person that created Miami Vice.

...and yet.

Okay, granted, all I've seen of it is a preview, and they were playing it on the screens at the club (but with the sound off, of course; you go t' the club for music, not a movie, neh?), but from what I saw, it looked like they did a mood shift, like it was stylistically different.

To date, I have only seen two, maybe three movies that was a re-make or a continuance of something I dearly loved from years past where I felt that the original vision--or at least, what I had grown up with--had been honored rather than trampled: TMNT and Superman Returns. Whereas I can name a double-wide buttload of movies or shows that have re-made something I adored that were nothing at all like what I'd grown up with to the point where, yeah, I wish they'd just re-named it and made it completely original...
Heck, much as I adored the new Star Trek movie--being not a fan of the original--I did empathize with my Trekkie friends who felt their childhoods had been violated.

So even if the same guy made the new Miami Vice movie...if it was as different from the original as the trailer seemed and as it looked from seeing (but not hearing) it at the club, chances are good that I should just stay the heck away from it.

No you didn't, Trekkies didn't get violated at all. The new film completely left their old canon alone and didn't touch them in the naughty bits in the least.

To hear some of them tell it, they most certainly did! Heh.
I've got this friend from the dojo who goes all red-faced and grumpy if you mention the new Star Trek. He's all, "GRAAGH!!! That is NOT Star Trek! It's NOT!" Heh.
Tony makes this look like it isn't "The Onion":

Yes, yes, I got the joke. But still...

People who complain for the sake of complaining without a valid defensible opinion really don't count. I'm glad to see you weren't serious about it though.

The Trek film was a good action flick, but i hope any sequel does try to have some substance too.

Change that to "americans" and i think we've found the root of the problem... :p

Agreed! I'd like some science mixed in next time around.

Fixed it for you.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind actually seeing the Klingon war in the next Star Trek film.

Hey, no one said it had to be believable science (Trek was never hard SF).

Man, if nothing else, watching old episodes of Miami Vice has brought back a lot of music memories; GAWDS, but I miss the 80s!

Well 80's music is indeed a lot better without having to see the haircuts too...

Aww, I like 80s hair. New Wave styles, anyway.

Philosopher B.

I had to watch an episode of Miami Vice in a sound class. Gotta love 80s synthesizers.
