Murder Mystery Parties

Anyone ever been to one of these before? A few of my friends are throwing a big one on Thursday, and NONE of us have ever actually been to one.

I'm supposed to play the banker. I'm just wondering if there's any tips or anything anyone can give me?

Hope I can stay in character all night...

I've never done one.

Anytime I'm at a game store with my wife, whether they sell them or not, she insists on getting and running one. She'll take any opportunity to throw a party though.

I went to one in high school that a friend of mine organized. She's run them before and we all had a ton of fun. As long as everyone involved is willing to get in character and act their parts, you should have a good time.

I've actually never seen Clue. And yet Geek law means that I still get that joke, even though its from the very end of a movie I haven't seen.

I threw one as a Halloween party years ago. Everyone came in costume and it was a lot of fun. None of us really knew what we were doing but we just followed the instructions and it was fine. We didn't all stay in character all night, just when we had to say or do stuff as our character. Meanwhile everyone else would be commenting MST3K-style.

The only thing similar I've ever played was a Werewolf party game. Essentially there are two were-wolves and one mystic chosen at random in the "township". Every "night" the werewolves kill one person off (while everyone has eyes closed), and every night the Mystic gets to guess who a werewolf is (signified by a yes or a no nod from the GM while everyone still has eyes closed). During the "day" it's basically a big witch hunt. Everyone tries to decide (werewolves included) who they should kill off in the hopes of it being the Werewolf.

During the round I played I was the mystic. Fact: It's not smart to try and validate your claim that you know who the werewolf is by saying "I'm the mystic". Surprisingly it was the township who had me killed rather than the werewolves. They decided I was being too honest.

I went to one that was kinda similar, it was a dinner and Murder Mystery Play on an early 20th century steam train. Basically 6 performers went from car to car acting out their scenes, and after they did the 3 acts (passes,) you would put the name of the character that committed the crime in a hat. The correct guesses were drawn from to determine the winner. I think they won a cruise.

Been to one, it was a lot of fun. The only drawback was that too many people were there (20+) and some didn't take it too seriously, especially one of the more important characrters. It's very important that the person who organizes this event give the major roles to those who'll really play their part. With our new home, we plan to host one with 10 or so guests in Feb/March.

We used to play that game in college. Except we called it "Mafia" and there were two mafia members and one police officer. It was really fun, but I have no poker face so I was always killed off early.
