It sucks that this guys shit got stolen, it really does. I feel for him. But does he honestly think that blubbering on Craigslist and posting a website about it, is really going to change the thieves' mind?

They stole it to sell it on the street for a quick 20 bucks, bro. Probably for an ounce of crack. They don't give two fucks about what it means to you, how you customized it, what your plans are for it. You're not going to get it back, unless you happen to see it in a local pawn shop window.

Am I so callused from living in New York City for most of my life and working in Philadelphia the other half, that all I see in this ad is a very, very naive person who recently moved to Vancouver. This guy seems like the type of person that would stop in the middle of Time's Square and flash his wallet out to start counting how much money he has.

Eh, he's making a last ditch effort, it's worth a try even if it's probably hopeless. The reality is, like you said, the person who stole it has probably already passed it on and if he does see it it will be via pawn shop. Plus crack heads who are busy stealing crap and then getting really high are probably not reading craigslist.

The problem with appealing to thieves' better nature is that they very, VERY rarely have one. As you say, they took this to score some meth or rock.

If this guy's smart, he's given these details to the local pawn shops. If they're like down here, they register with the police department and furnish details on everyone and everything that passes through their records. That would be this guy's only hope, I should think.

Sad, but a very real fact of life. I wish him the best of luck.

Well, let's think about it:

If he posts the message, his chances of getting it back increase. Perhaps very little, but they do go up slightly.

If he doesn't post the message, his chances don't change.

There are people who are swayed by emotional arguments, and can empathize with him. If he can get this out to people who might be in a position to see this guitar (collectors, pawn shops that sell on or peruse craigslist, etc) then he's in a better position than he would be if he didn't post it.

So, yeah. It may be pitiful, but it does increase his chances a little, tiny, probably immeasurable amount.

Maybe.
