NaNoWriMo - Who's in?

#1

Dave

Dave

Is anyone besides myself doing NaNoWriMo this year? I've tried it in the past and did not receive any backing on the home front, which made it incredibly difficult to keep going more than a day or two. This year - mostly because of my friend Mark's getting a book published - Kerri is on board and I'm getting geared up.

In fact, I've redone my old web site for this. It's what I was looking for in Photoshop - the header (thanks again, Amy!)

Not giving it out quite yet as I'm still working on it, but I doubt it's too difficult to find.

Anyway....NaNoWriMo! Who's in?

I wish I could. New job, new baby...writing 5-10k words a day is not likely to fit in my schedule this year. I have an idea that I'd like to write about but I simply don't think I can manage it. :(

#3

Chibibar

I got a story, but I don't have the time :(

I can't write at work due to work rules (anything I create at work belong to work contract thing)

I'm in. I'll see if I can keep up this year.

I'd love to do it, but since the last time I did it every year I've seemingly had some sort of crunch time, and this year is no different.

My biggest issue with NaNoWriMo is that it's November, which is not a good month for me to have lots of time to dedicate. Between making Christmas gifts, Thanksgiving, etc, every year I want to do it but can never find the time. If it was in like... February or March, then I'd be all over it.

This. Of the three years I've intended to do it (two while I was in college, one later) there was just too much going on in November.

We could always do our own.

Pick a better month than November and I might be convinced to participate!

#10

Dave

Dave

What does everyone think of March? No major holidays (at least in the US) and 31 days long.

#11

MindDetective

MindDetective

Hmmm...I think it will be better than November but it is also the last month of Winter quarter. I think I will always have something going on, though, and that is part of the challenge. So I would say it will be very hard to do, but easier than November.

I'm in. Since I write a book every two months or so it works out. More lurid pulp. Write Or Die, Bitches.

Kamikaze Mode: Keep Writing or Your Work Will Unwrite Itself
That's fucking scary.

#14

Biannoshufu

It's really useful for smashing down "writers block," though.

#15

Dave

Dave

Have you been published? This seems like something I'm shocked we didn't know about you already.

Another layer of the onion is revealed, it seems!

#16

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

Actually, she's mentioned a few times about the crime novels she writes. That's why she was grilling Officer Charon on some info a few weeks back.

#17

Biannoshufu

I suddenly want to change my username to stinky onion. I write stories for friends, have a little vanity press company make like 10 copies, and given them out as gifts. So no, not published. I think my writing is too mediocre to demand people pay for it. Just something I do to pass the time

#18

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

You could still toss it up on Ebook for 99 cent a piece, if you wanted to give it a shot. People would either buy it or wouldn't. Unless you feel self-conscious about it, in which case, don't, because there's always some asshole or troll out there.

Maybe I'll write 50,000 words of non-novel stories...

...but I doubt it.

Stopping for the night at 3,300 WORDS.

Not bad for the first day, eh?

Gotta say, if you wrote 2000 pages in a day, I think you're done. With the novel. And it's sequel. You win at NaNoWriMo.

I wrote 3400 words last night, but it's technically not a novel so it probably doesn't count.

"All work and no play makes Piotyr a dull boy" over and over?

Heh, no, just a screenshot LP where I write all the dialogue for the main character as it happens between screenshots of the actual game.

I say "All work and no play makes Piotyr a dull boy" over and over. :)

For all you writers, writing written writs really rapidly, I have a question:

Sex/gender as a stage in an evolving lifetime...

http://nihsen.com/index.php/topic,21.0.html

I've posted it on Dave's forum as it seems to have a home there, but I wanted to drag you all along cause you have cool thoughts and ideas.

Seems at home there?

Is this Dave's secret origin?

If people were all born male and given the choice to change to female, the human race would quickly die. Everyone would change to female on account of the boobies.

I can't believe I've never heard of this!! *derp de derp*

I love to write! I've been working on a novel for quite a while now - up to 36,000 words, yay! In my wildest dreams it will get published, but really, it just keeps me entertained. It's like an addiction. Every Sunday I write for hours. =^^= So, I would say 'Yes! I'm totally down for this!'...but I'll never keep up....:( (I'll keep plugging along with my book though!)

Amazingly, this is not THE stupidest thing I've ever seen you post here.

Possibly--and I'm just guessing here--it was a joke.

I think I've just about decided that's half of my problem on HF. I make a joke and everyone takes it seriously because I didn't put a stupid smiley.

It was a given that you were joking when I replied. It was still incredibly stupid. To put it in more familiar terms, it bombed.

Don't worry, Fade. I've had jokes bomb on a stage in front of a paying audience. Having a single joke fail on a message board is small potatoes by comparison. :D

#40

fade

I'm not bothered by it. Just seemed like a rather random one to point out as bad. Worse, it wasn't even my joke. The whole "if guys had boobs, they'd never leave the house" bit is probably as old as boobs themselves. I taught freshman geology, which was like 25% stand-up. You win some, you lose some, but you have to try to win any at all.

Halfway through the month, how are you all holding up?

Need an extra boost? Try out http://writtenkitten.net/ - it gives you a new kitten for every 100 words you type.

I cheated and cut and pasted for kittens, but used well it might be suitably motivational.

Good luck!

Skyrim and life have invaded. I had a great first few days and then it all went to shit in a big damned hurry.

And I was so stoked, too.

#43

LittleKagsin

LittleKagsin

Well, you can always pick it back up and try again. =^^=

I'm going pretty slowly with only around 3,000 words last weekend...

#44

Dave

Dave

My life right now is in utter turmoil. I am in a very bad frame of mind and have not been able to write. When I'm at work I'm sitting alone with headphones on and when I'm at home I have the headphones on playing Skyrim. I'm dealing with a lot and am in total escapist mode. You'd think that would be conducive to writing but for me it's just the opposite.

Well don't regret nanowrimo then - it shouldn't be another burden on your pile. Good luck with everything else though!

HalNoWriMo...it seems more and more daunting to me as the beginning of the month approaches. But I've been thinking a lot about what I want to write. I'm still in and I may try posting snippets each day. Anyone else going to try and write through the month of March with me?

#52

Still debating, as I will be on a family vacation for the whole last week of March.

I just got done failing a February version, and I'm busy revising one novel and proofing a short story collection... So nope, not in.

But I think this year I might actually have my schedule synched up to where I can do the November version. We'll see.

#57

Soliloquy

So... anyone actually start with this? I only had time for 764 words today, so hooray for being behind!

After doing 2x (at least) drawings a day for February, I'm spent...

I'm right there with ya, but I've been talking it over with my wife and she's had some good ideas. Plus she'll be doing illustrations, so there's that.

I'm on a deadline here at work so I've only written about 1,000 words and am going to start all over again due to having hit a wall. My deadline is Thursday. Tomorrow. It's KILLING ME!!

Yeah, I got derailed early. Going to dive back in but need to find a routine in this mess of a schedule.

I thought March was usually "ScriptFrenzy" which was a month to finish a screenplay. Or maybe it's April.

edit: I googled, it's April
