So basically, it's "We've given up on putting out games on a regular basis. Instead, we're going to sell suckers more useless stuff like hats and e-motes."

Again, I hope this means a new engine.

The sick thing is, I think they're making MUCH more money off these micro transactions than they did actually selling Half-Life games.

Damn you to hell valve! TO HELL!!!

Can't say I'm surprised.

Hmm, so I wonder what that actually DOES mean for episode 3. Does it mean they'll put that out and it will be the final product they design as episodic? Or does it mean they canned the idea of calling it episode 3, and really will call it half-life 3? I don't really care how they release it I guess, just as long as it's released.

What the fuck is with the hat shit again?

I think it is going to be like Half-Life the game. You will probably have DLC for "expansion" like more stories and mission. You can have micro transaction for different costume, weapons, ammo, abilities, hats (^_~) and probably maps (multi player?)
This is me handing in my Valve fanboy card. From now on, they're "just another developer" to me.

Oh well, I await HL3 instead of HL2:3. *shrug*

You'll have to wait until they finish releasing Left 4 Dead 500000 and more hats for Team Fortress...

Well yeah, I never said it'd be soon. I just think Valve saying that they're no longer gonna be making episodic content is like Nintendo announcing a new Mario game. It's not really news.

It would be like Half Life: The next generation or Origin (whatever I am making up stuff) and you can play the character but have DLC like alternate costume, hats, weapons that cost money

Sadly micro-transaction is where it is at right now. How do you think iTunes do so well? 1$ here 1$ there and most software are like $0.99 to $9.99 or something. People don't mind spending little money here and there.
Some MMORPG (Asian MMO does this) are doing VERY well giving away the base game for free and sell add ons.

It's the same thing with, say, Playstation Home. It's a glorified chat channel, but after people have bought whatever game they want on PSN, they've got a bit of credit hanging about. Just enough to buy a shirt or a hat or something. Some will go the full monty and spend $10-20 on that Storm Trooper or Darth Vader outfit.

I'd like to be noted that while i'm really annoyed that Ep.3 isn't coming, and we'll have to wait 3-4 more years for HL3 Valve's DLC strategy at least doesn't force you to buy stuff that actually influences gameplay or maps, so at least they're not as bad as others.

I hope so. I notice a LOT of the new games (well at least last 6 months) that when a new game come out. It is COMMON to have DLC (purchasable) for expansion from maps, weapons, scenarios, or more stories.
some of the popular come to mind
Batman
Fallout 3
Call of Duty
I am pretty sure there others if I start searching but I'm lazy.

@Li3n
Yeah, those are the ones i'm referring to (and ME2 with the guns etc.)
But what did Batman have (or did you mean another one then ArkhamAsylum)?
Oh, some extra challenge maps... that kinda stuff was around before the term DLC was invented, and has little effect on what id call the main game, so i don't usually count it as DLC. Also, i got the GOTY version off Steam (5€) so it was included in it so i hadn't noticed.
