On a weird PS1 emulation kick, need some suggestions

So, Metal Gear Solid turned 15 today and it made me realize it was half my lifetime ago. I decided I wanted to recapture some of that old magic and play some old underappreciated Ps1 gems. Not the Final Fantasies or the Resident Evils or the Tomb Raiders of the console, I'm talking weird shit that only 200 people played.

Games like Heart of Darkness, Einhander, Tomba, Silhouette Mirage and the like.

If anyone wouldn't mind shooting me some suggestion if they have any, I would appreciate it.

I was a Saturn fanboy, so I can't help you here.

... in fact, I still get twinges when I hear people favoring the PS1 over the Saturn.

You hate the world? :p

Wish I could help, Frank, but though I had many obscure PS1 games, all of them sucked. I ended up wasting money on crap like Breath of Fire III and Jade Cocoon, and borrowing good games from friends.

Saga Frontier was good, but I don't know whether or not that was popular. It was certainly a huge time sink.

That's pulling pretty far back in the memory banks.

A few I can think of off the top of my head (and keep in mind, some of these I haven't played since their initial release, so may be being seen through severe nostalgia goggles):

Um Jammer Lammy
Siphon Filter
Medievil
Pandemonium
Wild Arms

Y
Saga Frontier
I always thought Saga Frontier was an incomprehensible mess.

Um Jammer Lammy

Wild Arms
Yeah, I'm not even going to try Syphon Filter. I remember playing it way back in the day and it had awkward controls then.

I actually beat Wild Arms. I don't know anyone else who could manage the slog the middle of that game was.[DOUBLEPOST=1378363759,1378363617][/DOUBLEPOST]

PS1 was an amazing console, sorry you feel that way.

Hell, it even had the best multiplayer shooter of that generation of consoles (suck it Goldeneye), an entirely passable (something no one thought it could pull off) port of Quake 2.

Oh I have no problem, on a rational level, with people saying the PS1 is better. Yes, objectively the hardware was superior, objectively the games were better, objectively Sony had a better overall strategy.

But still, the Saturn was my first ever game console, it was my first love, and my fanboyism will never truly allow me to believe it was anything less than perfect.

Allow me to suggest Legend of Legaia. I always remember that one fondly. That, and Legend of Dragoon, flawed story and all.

Also, Suikoden. Because fuck yeah!

SaGa Frontier is probably the last good Romancing SaGa game, with tons of secrets to find and many amusing ways to break the game. But it is also very complex and you'll need to know what you're doing.

Breath of Fire 3 and 4 are both decent JRPG titles. I'll also second Legend of the Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, and Suikoden 1 and 2. I've also heard good things about Grandia and Wild Arms.

The Monster Rancher series is fantastic, but I don't know how it works in emulation. Jade Cocoon is similar.

Medievil 1 and 2 are great, but I hear the Vita/PSP version of Medievil is better than the PS1 version. Brave Fencer Musashi is great as well.

Games sitting on my shelf right now that I would recommend for PS1:
Suikoden 1&2
Ogre Battle
Dragon Warrior 7
Xenogears
Persona 1&2
Legend of Dragoon
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Wild Arms 1&2

Some of these games were wildly popular and known by alot of people such as Xenogears and Dragon Warrior 7. You already played Wild Arms and Legend of Dragoon was already recommended. Persona 1 can feel a little dated in graphics and definitely in it's 1st person dungeon crawler style but they're all very very solid games. Unfortunately they're all RPGs and huge time sinks so.....

Chrono Cross. Yes very different from the masterpiece that was Chrono Trigger, but it's still pretty awesome.

OH! Final Fantasy Tactics came from the same brainchild as Ogre Battle, so you might enjoy that if you liked the other. Vanguard Bandits is also an underrated strategy game.

I loved the crap out of Legend of Legaia.

I had totally forgotten about this game. I agree, it was great.

Oh I just remembered two gems that I don't own but wish I did:
Vandal Hearts
Vagrant Story

Again, two RPGs but alot of awesomeness inside.

That's the game I was trying to think of--knew it started with a B.

I love how some people are totally ignoring what Frank said not to suggest :p. I'm not ragging on anyone for it; it's just funny because it happens all the time. But on another note, it's hard to gauge what was popular back then because the internet wasn't such a big deal as it is now. I played Vandal Hearts several times and loved it, so for me it felt like it was popular, but no one I knew played it, so it probably was. Saga Frontier was played by all my friends, but I had no way of knowing if it was a big deal to everyone or just our group. There are obvious exceptions, like FFVII and Metal Gear Solid, because they get name-dropped on every nostalgia list for better or worse, but for the obscure stuff, it wasn't like now when there's a Wii U Community for every game coming out on that system where people can chat or ask questions or criticize.

I can't give this enough likes. Why haven't they ever made more of this game?

The first one was great and I had a ton of fun with it. The second one not as much.

Square Enix.
No Bushido Blade sequel, no Chrono second sequel, no real Final Fantasy Tactics game in years, Kingdom Hearts III taking fucking forever, no Final Fantasy VI remake, assing up of Parasite Eve.

I'm sure the list goes on. As someone said on the forum when they shifted their board of directors around, it's the easiest company in the world to save if they'd just cut down their CGI cutscene budgets and start making decent fucking games like they did when they were called Squaresoft.

That Square your thinking of is long dead. It's now mostly Enix (in charge of the company, anyway).

Oh right... Vagrant Story. 100% this. It's fantastic, seriously. Bit of a learning curve on how to make better better weapons (which involves not only weapon/armor type, but material AND how each score effects others) and how Phantom Points work, but probably THE best story of the era and that's comparing it to some of the best Final Fantasy games and other gems. So glad I bought this on a whim in the day.

Not sure they will be your style, but I still have my PS1, for three reasons:
Rollcage Stage 2, Armored Core 1, and Tiny Tank.
Tiny Tank is not really that good, mind you, just the final level is so unbelievably fucking hard I have not beat it yet.
Armored Core is the game that made me decide to get a Playstation, when it was between that and N64.
And Rollcage is still my favourite racing series; it upsets me that no one has made any new ones since the PS1 days.

Holy hell I forgot about the entire Armored Core series. I'm a dolt. Those are phenomenal.

Except that newer ones on the 360/PS3. They changed the interface and it feels weird to play now. I personally feel it peaked around Armored Core 3 and Silent Line, both on the PS2.

#31

Frank

Armored Core, the game I liked playing in the mechbay and building and colouring mechs more than actually playing the game. The controls were so weird and with each new game they never got better. They changed the controls, but never made them any less awkward.

Seconding UmJammer Lammy.

Football Season just started, so why not NFL Blitz 2000?
