The New Monopoly Will Be Controlled by an All Powerful, All Seeing Tower


Monopoly Live comes out this fall, and the tower in the center of the board game does everything for you but move your pieces. It keeps track of money, rolls the dice, tells you where to move, keeps track of the pieces with infrared sensors and more.

I'm someone who is excited about a future playing board games on an interactive computer controlled board (like Mircosoft Surface), but this sounds like it's going to cost too much money for limited functionality. If all it does is play Monopoly, just get non-electronic Monopoly and keep track of the paper money. However it's the tweaks to the rules that really make me puzzled. Especially the ability to "upgrade your utilities so they are green." Don't fix what isn't broken.


Wait, haven't I already had to rant about a new version of Monopoly updating the game for no reason? One with a circular board, electronic money and a awful art design? Stop remaking the same game. (Yes, those words are being said by a Zelda fan).

I'm withholding judgment. Some games are better when helped along electronically - Risk, Solitaire, Battleship - and with Monopoly going this way I think it might be good. I've seen too damn many cheating bankers....

Yeah and it's actually remarkably convenient, not having to deal with paper money.

This seems like it's going too far. If all I need to do is pus a dice button and move my thing, it's not really much of a game. It also precludes a lot of houserules that are sometimes fun. :)

So the computer tracks your location and rolls the dice, meaning it will choose where you land? Can't wait to see what Kinect hackers will do.

And a great teaching moment for why the finance industry crumbled. Too many "good" people, when placed in a position to be able to do so, will game the system to their own benefit.

And just like the gov't, Hasbro has enacted safety controls and measures to limit such shenanigans.

Uh, this is in the polireligimore subforum, right...?

You'd think Hasbro would be better off by making a giant iPad like device that you could load all their games onto. I suppose viewing angles might be a killer though.

Personally I like board games as board games. Most of the fun is in variations on rules and trying to trick people along the way. I love it when I land on someones property in Monopoly and they don't realize it until it's too late. Not to mention most of the teaching opportunities are lost in the digital versions.

I would never buy these for my kids, we have a great time playing on the boards, moving our pieces, throwing the dice and making different handicaps for the different ages/players. So no thanks to this.

This is a total waste of money. Part of the charm of board games is actually rolling dice and counting out paper money and such. I would rather just play monopoly on a bunch of networked computers than use this stupid thing.

No thanks. If I want that, I'll buy monopoly for one of my many gaming-capable devices.
