Honestly, I wanted to send him some books/comics a few weeks back and was told that he didn't know what would set off the alarms. 
Sent. Told him about my book being published. 
Not sure what the situation is , but couldn't he use a library computer or something?

He's sort of in the hospital. It's a long story, but no access to anything. I think he's lucky to have email.
I feel bad because I want to say something to him but have no idea what. Obviously I hope he's feeling better and feels like this was an adequate use of his time and everything like that but it's not like he and I are best buddies or anything, and I don't want to come across as disingenuous...

Someone should throw together all the news from the Comic Con. I doubt he's heard about any of it.

I don't really know him that well, but considering he did the games-on-sale thread, perhaps we can look out for specific games at specific price points and get them for him (he can reimburse later or not, as the case may be 
). Might be worth asking him if there's something he'd be interested in, what with the Steam summer sale and all that.

It really depends. In the hospital I worked at for a while (admittedly it was about 4 year ago and I'm not up to date on their current policy), there were several wings where it was strictly no cell phones, no computers, only tv in the common room and/or supervised.
Other parts had more leniency or had at least a computer in the library or some such - monitored but enough to check mail and such.
I said it, but jokingly, because I said we miss him for other reasons.
Thanks for the PM update Dave. Guys, might I suggest just a friendly hello to him? If he has limited email access, it might be part of his treatment and you might be doing him more harm than good? Food for thought. I hope he's well.

Also, I just want to say thanks to everyone who has emailed him! I feel awful since I haven't been able to chat with him for the past few weeks - I've just felt so overwhelmed. Hopefully, I can get back on track with updates for him.
