Problems sleeping...

So it's not the sleeping so much as it is the noise and the cold.
Let me explain:
So my wife and I have slightly above average noisy neighbors. They aren't terrible and we've already talked to them and honestly, there isn't much more that they can do to be quiet. So that isn't the problem.
We run a fan, and that generally takes care of any noise they make. However, it's so freaking cold right now that the fan is increasing the cold in our bedroom so I'm starting to think the fan might not be the best idea.

What do you guys use for white noise at night that doesn't cost a ton? The fan is great in the summer but... it's just to cold for it at night.

You try earplugs? They really help me out.

I thought about that but I'd worry that I'd sleep through my alarm.

That may be an issue, but I find that alarms are usually enough to wake me.

My wife said no earplugs. So that's out.

Sensory deprivation tanks?

Naah, just kidding. Seriously... uhhhh... hmmm... urmm... sorry, got nothing. Except bed-breaking jokes.

You could get a space heater. They buzz a bit to give you some white noise and also take care of the cold a little.

I use the radio internet or otherwise

Isn't that dangerous? To leave them on all night I mean?

Have a lot of sex. I mean 3 to 6 times on average for a night. Trust me, you will sleep through a train wreck.

:D

Otherwise, they do sell white noise machines. My Sister in law uses it with her son. He is out like a light when it is turned on.

I use an air filter. It helps with my allergies, and makes a nice constant racket to drown out a noisy house. I'm not sure how much it cost, but if you don't care how well it filters, I know the cheap ones are like $20 or something.

When my family goes on vacation my mom brings along a Conair sound machine (I think I have the name right). They have them at Wallgreens and at Amazon and probably lots of other places. $25-50 I think. They can do different sorts of sounds, with adjustable volume, but I found anything but surf and white noise to be annoying.

You could turn the fan the other direction?

Depends on the model, I suppose.

How about downloading a free mp3 of white noise? They're about 30 minutes long, one base with three variations. Sounds like ocean waves.

I'm the same way when it comes to sleeping.
In the dorm room I have a fan set up which despite the soothing quality of the sound the dorm room tends to get overheated and stuffy.

A radio turned to a static-y station or buy a sound machine.

I usually just turn on my radio or an audio book.

I came to say this. Unless it's a ceiling fan.

Any suggestions for waking up with a start then falling back asleep again.

The worst is during finals week I probably can get maybe 4 to 5 hours of sleep each night.

Soliloquy

You could also take up snoring.

I think that white noise will actually work well as the ambient background noise in a video I'm making for class.

Thanks!

Not at all. I use mine throughout the night during the winter. Most have auto safety features. This is probably a good bet for you. Room will stay warm, and you will have your needed white noise.

I say just pile on more blankets, or maybe an electric blanket.

Turning the fan the other way is good, towards the wall means more noise. But if it blows on something soft it keeps the room from getting too cold. at least in my experience.

Espy, I do the same thing and I simply just turn the fan down to medium and face it towards the wall (our cat spends a lot of time in the bathroom). If you sleep with the door to the room and/or bathroom open, point the fan in THAT direction. You get the noise without the wind.

We run a two fan set up and do this for both. Since mine faces the wall, sometimes I get residual wind, but its nothing a nice, thick down alternative blanket doesn't take care of.

Well, we have the fan set at the lowest setting but it still seems to be making the room even chillier, which is what I'd like to avoid. So I'm thinking looking into heaters that can stay on all night/white noise machines or something. The other option is for us to move the bed to the other side of the room, but then it's not where we like it and we have it against our painted accent wall, which is really nice.
feng shui bahh.

Just be having sex, like, constantly. No noises will bother you

I was thinking about this, too. Put the fan by the heater's vent (if you have one) and it'll circulate hot air around, I think.

I hadn't thought about that one. Good outside-the-box thinking, @Li3n.

No, no, no... the bodies go inside the box... also rocks, then you dump it in the ocean...

It's not but and we do have it blowing away from us but it's just blowing cold air around the room, which isn't helping.

I think I'm gonna look into a white noise machine or a fan that has a heater built into it or something.
