The DDoS attacks are over a month in the rear view and last night we hit 401 people online at one time!!!
Personally I hit 50 on my druid about two weeks ago. Divinity (the guild I'm part of) has been recognized as the number 3 guild on the server and has offically been put in Planes/Dragon raid rotation (without all the drama that the other two have).
Still enjoying it. In the process of bringing up a Mage now. Sol Ro/Hate/Sky are still a couple months (and I'm willing to bet our pop explodes when Kunark goes live).
I'd dig out my Shadows of Luclin disks and give it a go, but quite frankly, I can't go back to playing EQ if I want to have any semblance of a normal life.
WoW, you can just set down and come back to later. Not so much with EQ.

No cost to play. You do need to have a copy of the Everquest Titanium client (Secrets of Faydwar works as well, but has some bugs). They have been accepting donations for the server/bandwidth but it's not required.
