It looks like it's getting to be a good time to pick up PS2 games fairly cheap, and I've been looking for some new ones.
Here's what I have:
Sega Genesis Collection
Burnout 3 Takedown
RE Code Veronica X
RE4 Limited Edition
Onimusha 3
Soul Calibur 2, Soul Calibur 3
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers; The Third Age
Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore
Rumble Roses
Xenosaga
Robotech: Battlecry
Armored Core III
Front Mission 4
Growlanser History of War
Kingdom Hearts
Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2, Soul Reaver 2, Defiance
Devil May Cry
WWE Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain
Star Wars: Starfighter
AirForce Delta Strike
Persona 3, Persona 3 FES, Persona 4
Star Ocean: Till The End of Time
Star Wars: Battlefront II
Final Fantasy X, X-2, XII
Gun
Black
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence Limited Edition
Call of Duty: Legacy
Basically I'm looking for some games you can enjoy playing for a few minutes or an hour, but can also enjoy playing for hours on end - not a game where you have to invest dozens of hours to get to the "good stuff".
I'm a casual gamer looking for a good pick up and play game. And since I generally suck in terms of skill, something that's "smash your controller against a wall" hard is something I'd like to avoid.
Any ideas?

God of war I and II
I think onimusha I and II are also worth picking up as well. It's been a long time since I played 1 but I remember enjoying it a lot. It wasn't too terribly hard but it wasn't necessarily just "mash X button, win game" either. 2 tried to expand on the core of the first game and while it does take some missteps I wouldn't call it a failure or anything.

Ico (might be hard to find) and Shadow of The Collosus. Two of the finest games the PS2 has to offer.

I liked GoW but I couldn't get past the damn temple in the desert. There's that room with like 3 or 4 medusae before the huge chain or stairway or something? Never made it past there. Like I said, I pretty much suck. I'll give it another shot, though.
I rented ICO, and am done with it. Fuck that crazy glowing bitch. Fucking hour to get the fucking box in exactly the right spot and she just won't fucking come over here and leave the damn room. Looked to see how far I was through the game, had dozens of rooms left to go, FUCK THAT.

Shadow Hearts, Shadows Hearts: Covenant, Shadows Hearts: From the New World. (If you get the first one, you MUST get the 2nd)
Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War (Save your Data from 5 for Zero, if you get the Falkan or X-02. You'll keep them and not need to unlock them again.)
Timesplitters 2, Timesplitters: Future Perfect (plays like a better version of Goldeneye. Almost a parody of FPS games)
Ratchet and Clank, RaC2: Going Commando, RaC3: Up Your Arsenal, RaC4: Deadlocked
Beyond Good and Evil (Best Under-rated game ever)
Sly Cooper and the Theivus Racconus, Sly Cooper 2, Sly Cooper 3: Honor Among Thieves
Disgaea 1, Disgaea 2 (You can play this for RIDICULOUSLY long if you really want to)
Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King

Is Ace Combat 5 better than Ace Combat 4?
I make pretty much zero progress in FPS games. Seriously, I haven't gotten through the 1st full level in Black or the 2nd in CoD. That is how bad I suck. BTW, if anyone wants those games, I'd be willing to trade.
This is a silly question, as they are both excellent! But if you twisted my arm, I'd say that 5 wins on story. The game did a surprisingly good job of getting me to care for my squad mates.
Both of those are skill games--he specifically asked not for skill games.
Though in any other case I'd say good recommendations. I'm playing Shadow of the Colossus for the first time right now and it's such a fantastic game. Other games have epic moments, but this whole thing feels epic in every part.

I'd say 5 is the best of the series, as far as story. You actually feel like your making a difference in the War and that the people on the ground really do respect you for it. Plus the whole Myth Arc with the story of Razgriez makes the whole thing feel very epic. Zero's story is nowhere near as strong, but it has better gameplay.

I missed that part... though I wouldn't really say Ico is much of a twitch game. It's an environmental puzzle game. The only fighting in it is very simplistic and easy.
SOTC is definitely more difficult. Maybe I'd take back that one, though one would be missing out on a really amazing game.

I'm willing to try Shadow of the Colossus - what bothered me about Ico was the annoying helpless useless NPC.

Colossus is a wonderful game, it can just be difficult.
But it's certainly no escort mission. It's basically tracking down the gigantic boss monsters and fighting them using your environment, your horse, weapons, or clinging to them like a parasite.

Are the PS2 versions of X-Men Legends 1 & 2 as good as the Gamecube versions? I loved those games. Excellent action-RPGs.
I'll also second Beyond Good and Evil (though I've only played the PC version, I hear the console versions are even better).
Oh hell yes. I need to pick that one up sometime soon.

Zone of the enders 1 and 2
OMG
do it now and don't look back. Unless you don't like mechs or anime (which is fine). They're fun and certainly challenging at times but I don't think they're beyond beating. Maybe they are. I beat them and I mostly suck.

I've got 4 mech games and about a dozen anime-ish games on ym list. I'll have to look for these.

I don't know if it will be the same in your area but by me all the Hollywood Video stores are going out of business and their PS2 games are all 3 for $5. So you may want to check your local Hollywood Video stores

I may actually check our Hollywood video. I missed out on quite a few games, such as SoTC.

Zone of the Enders 2 was awesome. I wish I had bought it, instead of renting all those years ago.

The great thing about that game is that it does what every other sequel should do: you start out as powered up as you were at the end of the previous game, and only get more powered up from there.
Also, you fight against the ship from gradius.

I second the nominations for the God of War series and the Sly Cooper series. Sly Cooper is a series I feel is really overlooked.
I was going to suggest the Armored Core series, as I have a soft spot for them, but you already have one anyway.
War of the Monsters is a tonne of fun multiplayer, and its one that people seem to have just plain forgotten, but it was great.
Also, I've found that the Peter Jackson's King Kong game and LOTR: Return of the King have a level of fun and replayability I never would expect from movie to videogame adaptations and I definitely recommend you at least rent them if you can find them.

I played all the way through Return of the King, it was pretty good.
Nearest Hollywood Video is 45 miles away. Darn.

Seconding the Ratchet and Clank games. They're a good casual fun, but with a decent amount of "man that was fun, why haven't I replayed it yet."

There's a disturbing lack of Katamari in this thread.
