PlayStation 3 sales rocket 1000% on slim release

Chart-Track has told GamesIndustry.biz that sales of the PlayStation 3 have rocketed 999 per cent over the past week.

Sony introduced the new, slimmer SKU last Tuesday, and although Chart-Track does not reveal actual sales numbers, Dorian Bloch, director of the firm called the growth \"a huge increase\".

\"The uplift on week 36 on week 35 is plus 999 per cent,\" revealed Bloch. \"We don't give out the hardware numbers, but never-the-less it's a very large increase.\"

The boost in sales will be a pleasing early start to the Christmas season for Sony, which told GamesIndustry.bizlast month that it expected the redesign to pull in new consumers.

\"I think what I've heard anecdotally is that this is the point people were waiting for - a redesigned model and, in Euros, a significant price reduction,\" said Andrew House, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. \"That's people's cue to jump into the business.\"

The PlayStation 3 has been remodelled earlier in the its lifecycle than the PlayStation 2. The PS2 slim, released in the 24th week of 2004, helped sales jump 310 per cent.

The news follows a climb in Xbox 360 sales of 43 per cent last week, due to the price cut for the Elite model to GBP 199.

This week, sales for the Elite were still up in the region, said Chart-Track, an increase of 29 per cent over last week's growth.

Of course it's selling better... the price was the biggest hurdle in getting people to buy it. So it's not a matter of going on a diet and getting hit on more... it's a matter of charging less for sex.

Asked for one for Christmas. The price was one hurdle for me. The lack of Dead Rising on PS3 was another, but DR2's coming out next year!

It's comparing that week's sales to the week before, when the week before had probably seen a very large decrease in sales, with everyone waiting for the release of the slim to make their purchase.

I'm not saying their overall sales haven't increased from the price cut and new model. I'm just saying that 999% increase is highly misleading.

This is the exact same Sony BS they pulled at system launch. I remember the one sony guy saying he'd pay X amount of dollars if you could find one at launch, an then penny arcade did the comic with piles of them.

That was well after launch that he said that. At launch they were impossible to find because of all the morons who were all, "I'm going to buy three and put them on Ebay for 3000 dollars each! I'm also a complete fucking moron. Guduuuuurrrrr."

well when you sell 3 PS3 units in week 35.... it shouldn't be too hard to sell 30 in week 36.
