PSP and "Special Firmware"

To avoid any issues I don't want anything posted here I'm simply going to say I need some help as my older firmware no longer plays games I already own that I've put into CSO/ISO form and need some advice in updating my firmware. Thanks and PM me.

Actually I have the firmware you mentioned, it's not compatiable with the newer releases. I tried to PM you the details but it says you cannot recieve PMs?

Its the best firmware in terms of compatibility, have you tried looking for a [FIX] rom in espalpsp.com?
I cant find the option to allow pms from people not in my contact lst, if you could list the game I find a pached version or patch it for you and send it to you through pm.

Persona USA

I bought the game to support Atlus but the load times are atrocious, I want to run it off the memory card as an ISO but having horrible luck at my usual ISO site as their file isn't compatiable with the firmware we discussed.

I was under the impression that there was nothing inherently illegal about breaking your firmware or having an emulator on a PSP. It voids your warranty, but it's not something you (or Dave) can get in trouble about. As long as your not talking about and/or linking to a site that has torrents or downloads for copyrighted materials, you should be in the clear.

Feel free to clear this up Dave, if your watching.

The US version had an update over the Japanese which had the lone purpose of making it unplayable on earlier firmware (kinda sucks, Sony forcing people to upgrade every other week with only the odd firmware having some extra feature)

A FIX copy of the game playable on on 5.00M33-6, just press select when you start up the PSP and change emulation method to Sony NP96600, which actually is the only way to play games like Tekken 6 if you choose to install the game in your PSP from the UMD to make it play faster (as well as Soul Calibur)

Thanks again to JCM for the response, I'm glad I don't have to update my firmware as it was a pain in the ass to get in the first place. I have a new site to check up on updates and again this wasn't about illegal roms, I own the game (Both PSX and PSP versions) and since I don't have the hardware/software to rip my own UMDs I'm glad to have a place to get them.

From the site we discussed, there is multiple "part" downloads, I'm guessing I just zip those together/unzip the main file to create the ISO?

Sidenote, little off track. Just got a used psp slim, already modded with new firmware and a 32gig memory stick duo....Hot fucking damn, I love this thing. Loaded it up with my...backups. and a bunch of movies and shows. It is the tits.

Only problem is that it crashes when I trty to run ps1 emulation. I am going to look into that, but it is not too big a deal, at the moment. Persona is great.

I have a PSP and I have been thinking about installing some "special" firmware but I was nervous about something going wrong and it not letting me play my normal PSP games/UMD movies. Or somehow something going wrong later on. So my question is how does the "special" firmware work? Does it lead to lag or crashes or anything like that?

It runs games faster than the UMDs can, even games where it's practically hard-coded (The biggest plague on Persona USA were both in the PSX and PSP remake: massive slowdown during animations was removed by running it off the memory card). So I would say "no" to the lag or crashes. The problem with the firmware is that yes, it can "brick" your system. Brick being the term because once it happens, your PSP is about as good as a brick. This is only a danger when first creating the "break" for the system, after that it's smooth sailing.

What I recommend, and what I did personally was look on craigslist where alot of people offer their services to "break" your PSP for you and install the firmware (takes a total of like 15 mins for the work) so all you have to do is get your own games. Personally to keep myself from feeling guilty about "pirating" is that I purchase the UMD then I download the game. For the simple fact that I know the download is going to play better than the UMD itself.

Well I almost never buy games, unless it's for a company I have alot of faith in and really want to show my support for more games. Ex: I own every incarnation of the Lunar games made. I'm going to be buying the PSP remake because I'd like to see them remake Eternal Blue as well. I bought Persona PSP USA in the hopes that we'd get both part 2s translated and brought over as well. If everyone just keeps pirating games, they won't bother making more. Ex: Gargoyles series DVDs. (They did a shit job on the transition, granted, but still they didn't continue due to low sales).

I wasn't so interested in current games I was more interested in classic games (snes, nes, genesis, etc) how does it work for those?

This is true, and yet, it does not bother me at all. Ah well.

It has phenomenal emulators for almost all classic 8bit/16bit/32bit systems. If I'm not mistaken it can also do PSX games to some extent.

I for one am surprised this thread made it almost a page with no Halforumite joking about their own "special firmware" what with the quotes and all.

This psp release of Star Ocean: The Second Story is fantastic! One of my favorite games redone for this system, and I am loving it. The new voice overs are great! Wooooo.

Amen..... Most PSX games can run, if ripped properly... now if someone could get the N64 emulators to do sound, then I could get roms of all my old N64 games on the go.

There are countless emulator packs for PSPs avaliable through torrent, from Atari up to N64.

Last I tried SNES emulation was still pretty lame, save for a few games. Has it been fixed recently?
I have no probems with any SNES game but Starfox, Doom and Wolfenstein.

Funnily enough, most GBA FPS games run badly too, but for the Ecks vs Server games.
