I've blasted the PSP before I had one, and perhaps that's unfair. And then I got my brother's old one because he was done with it and I very much wanted Final Fantasy Tactics.

Cut to today, I elected to update my PSP firmware to 5.50. It got stuck, and I could hear the disc having problems with it, loading, reloading. It says not to turn it off, unplug it, or remove the disc. Hoping it was just taking a long time at one point, I left it alone for nearly an hour. Came back, still stuck. So I turned it off, hoping it'd be like when you update a computer that ends up going off.

WRONG.

I've now discovered the meaning to the term "bricked", in that my PSP is a useless brick of plastic. I've also learned I could've avoided this either by not updating or by downloading the update to my memory card from the computer and loading it that way, in which case had there been an error, nothing bad would've happen by shutting it off. Apparently the only way to fix this is through a hacked PSP to assist fixing the new one.

I'm not going to curse or scream or damn Sony to hell. I'm not going to get into detail about my issues with the PS2 or PS3 in the past. I know they try to make computers, when that's Microsoft's forte.

I'll just say this: in 18 years, a piece of Nintendo hardware has never given me a day of trouble.

And yet I wouldn't spend a day without my "modded" PSP.

Go fig.

Research has shown me that modded PSPs are less trouble-prone than ones using official firmware.

I just don't understand that.

Wait, Microsoft makes computers? I don't think I'm gonna buy one anytime soon... Especially with their steller red ring xbox's as a track record. But seriously, this happens to hardware, even the best. It's out of warrenty and all that is it? Nothing can be done?

Yeah, I realized that was dumb. I meant something else, but it still doesn't make sense. I guess I mean, when Sony can't get computer systems in their game systems working, they need to be making just game systems.

It's a hand-me-down from my younger brother from years ago, so yeah, no warranty and the only way to fix it is to do this short-circuiting thing with another battery involving data from a "modded" PSP (which no one I know has).

I don't plan to mod or customize a future PSP... but I can see why people do so.

So this is a common thing then? Lik the red rings?

It's apparently easy to make happen.

One case =/= all PSPs. PS2s and PS3s are pretty much reliable mahines as well, not as much as something by Nintendo.

Because we with modded PSPs (as well as any nerd who knows gadgets) dont update to any new firmware before reading up on it, checking what problems may arise from it et al.

In your case, you can pretty much ask Sony for your $ back, if its under warranty and you've never hacked it.

The general rule of thumb when it comes to Sony is don't get a console from launch, as it WILL have problems. Wait 6-12 months and get a second run or later console and you usually won't have the same problems.

Corrected that for you.

My first DS was a troublesome phat that had a faulty R button &^%$#

Only system to ever give me issues at launch was a ps2. Disc tray began to compress the rest of the hardware and we had to trade it in. Other than that we never had issues with anything else, not even my 360 or my brother's PSP. Sometimes I think it's just bad luck, you picking up this box instead of that box.

The only two systems I have had that have given me any real trouble has been my PS2 (which eventually died and I had to buya new one) and my 360. On my 360 I have had to send it in twice for repairs and the last time they sent me a new system but sadly it seems that the disc tray isn't working right so I have got to give them another call.

*edit* I just got off the phone with Microsoft and sure enough I have to send my system back in for repair. Luckily it is still under warranty but unluckily now I won't get a chance to plat Dragon Age for about a month while I wait for my system to make it's way back to me

Actually, this IS a launch PSP, now that you mention it.
