I may have mentioned from time to time how I much I adore the character of Butler the butler in PvP. The rest of the comic, not so much, but whenever Butler appears, there's a little voice inside me that goes 'Squee!' with delight.

Today, that voice fell into a deep coma.

Butler... is... Lolbat. Fuckin' LOLBAT! The most asinine, idiotic, lowest-common-denominator character you could find in PvP! And Kurtz made him to be Butler's alter ego!

I mean, I think I've been rather reasonable with PvP. It's not as good as it used to be, but it still provided a few smiles every now and then (when it came out in time). But for fuck's sake, Kurtz, you just went and squeezed a dirty, carrot-pieced lump of shit on the one character you had left untouched and awesome! It doesn't even make sense! He's Robbie's butler, but he's also supposed to be Lolbat and Rex Roffle? Does Butler ever sleep!? Or will that be explained with him owning a mystical Green Coffee Bean given to him by immortal space midgets!? Fuck you, Kurtz, fuck you!

I liked Lolbat, especially when it first came out (though it's a one trick pony that's gotten rather old rather quickly), so I'm not too bothered by this. As long as Butler continues to be awesome, and we don't get too many Lolbat/PvP crew crossovers, I'll be quietly "meh" about it.

Eh, cute. And I suppose he'd use the same method that Batman does to get enough sleep.

I liked it just fine, but I always liked Lolbat. He's one of the few places that I DO still laugh at PvP. Scott addresses the haters straight on in his commentary, and I think this is one of his more honest moments, even if it's no consolation to the people who hate Lolbat and love Butler.

I actually didn't like most of the rest of the week because Lolbat didn't say anything funny and the rest of the script was lifted almost straight out of Superman, but I thought this was an awesome twist.

I was just about to post about this.

I thought it was interesting, but there's a break in the continuity. Butler is LOLBat, which is fine. Butler's a cool character, LOLBat's an okay one (at best). The 'problem' is that LOLBat has previously been established as a reporter. So, how is Butler a butler, and a reporter?

Obviously, he requires no sleep. That's 30% more time.

Sure, no sleep. That explains how he's at the house as a Butler and running around as a newspaper reporter. :)

Kurtz has a little bit of the Lucas Syndrome going on here it seems. The ole: "I knew Luke and Leia were going to be brother and sister from the beggining, despite having them hook up. Yes." ;)

Ehhh, you know what? I liked this!

I honestly feel that Kurtz could make LolBat his own monthly comic at Image or something. I know that some people here hate the character with a firey vengeance, but I've always been entertained by LolBat. Imagine if Kurtz just did a regular series where every issue was a self-contained adventure, ala the old Marvel comics? Introduce a new villain every month, etc etc.

The problem with LOLBat are following:

1) The meme is kinda old. Kurtz jumped on this way too late.
2) I think the joke is unsustainable. There's only so many jokes you can do in this vein before you run out or start to repeat.

These are the big 2 issues I have with it. I don't mind it as much as some people but I think it's better as a one-shot than an entire strip.

T

ThatNickGuy

Yeah, that's kind of true. It depends on how it's written, though. Like I said, if it was in a single issue format with self-contained adventures, like the old Lee/Ditko Spider-Man, I think it might be kinda fun.

In fact, I just pictched the idea to Kurtz in e-mail, offering to co-write such a comic. I highly doubt he'll take up the idea, but I really see LolBat with potential to be a big thing.

It's not so much that I hate Lolbat, I'm quite indifferent to the character in general.

My beef is that Kurtz went and mixed him up with Butler, who is hands down my favourite character among the PvP cast. I have a thing for deadpan snarkers, sue me.

It's like taking a fine steak dinner and a chocolate milkshake. They are good, even excellent when separate. But mix them up in a blender and you don't get a great meal, you get an ugly mash that probably tastes pretty bad, and ruin a good steak in the process.

That's pretty much what I thought or that Straub gave him the idea. Who knows.

I laughed pretty hard at that one actually. I'm not sure how I feel about lolbat. He's not so great himself but the stuff that happens around him is pretty funny. Like that one villain a few months ago....the crocodile chef...was it killer crock? Idk. I though he was great. I was expecting more awesome from the superman parody. the art was cool the jokes, sadly, fell flat.

LOLBat and Sheky represent everything I loathe about PVP. LOLbat is worse Tranformers 2. It's not even funny in its inanity.

Ugh.

That he ruined butler by connecting him with this utterly obnoxious character makes this so much worse. I liked butler but now he's suffering under the crushing weight of the LOLBat (which will undoubtedly become all too obvious later on, as Scott does LOLBatler in the real strip).

Oh well. This is merely another reason to keep him off my list.

Damnit.

My fellow creative people (which is a large portion of the forum)...you know when you get a good idea and you just can't let it go? How you have to write something immediately?

I just wrote the first two pages of LOLBat #1 in script form. I wrote it in about 40 minutes on the bus to school just now. And you know what? It's funny. It's damn funny and I was trying not to laugh while writing it. And by funny, I don't mean "fuck you, it's funny" kind of funny.

I'm sending this off to Kurtz, along with a rough outline of the remainder of the first issue (which I've already got in my head). This is too good NOT to at least send in.

I liked it, and I like Butler and Lolbat more for it. Butler was always great, one of my favorite characters, but connecting him with Lolbat turns Lolbat from just an idiot in a weird suite to a guy, that you know now, is just acting that way deliberately in order to distance himself from his true nature, the butler.

It makes Lolbat to me, seem smarter, then I original thought of him, since now rather then being just him naturally, it's all just an act now.

T

ThatNickGuy

Fanfic? Hell with that. I'm picturing this as a montly (?) comic published through Image!

And Butler's origin sticks.

T

ThatNickGuy

Incorrect. Fanfiction would be something I'd publish online on my own, without Kurtz, and not make money on it. I fully intend on letting Scott in on this idea.

If (and that's a very, VERY big if) Kurtz is down for it, this is something that would be awesome for both of us.

E

elph

But, you're nothing more then a Fan to him, so he would just take the idea and move on. Leaving your story as fanfic.

But right now, since you don't have some fictional comic deal with Image and Kurtz, you spent your bus ride writing fiction about someone else's intellectual property, because you are a fan.

I'd like to see it for sure.

I'm just sayin', it's fanfic. If it gets picked up (again, doubtful), it'll be PvP: Expanded Universe.

T

ThatNickGuy

Yeah, I'm not denying that. It's writing someone else's property, but honestly? I've already done half the work for Scott. But this is the kind of fanfic that I don't want to just remain fanfic, you know? This feels a heck of a lot more viable than, say, writing a Superman or Matrix fanfic.

It sounds as though you've done more work then Scott ever will on many of his projects, but that still doesn't change the situation.

Hey, it was on my laptop, so it wasn't THAT shaky. :)

First two pages are up in the Artist's Corner. Read it!

How do you know he does them at the same time? How do you know that Butler and the reporter guy are ever supposed to be in the same timezone?

Where's my No-Prize....oh, right.
