QUESO

What does it mean to you?

I went to Wisconsin once and they didn't even know what was up!

Cheese dip/sauce is usually what it means here.

It's that special kinda Texan cheese sauce fer dippin'.

Scott Kurtz, Kris Straub and Dave Kellett once discussed it on a podcast in 2007, and then in 2008, Dave brought us these:

I had no idea what the hell you were talking about until I read the replies in this thread. Spanish isn't very common up here.

The whole damn state I guess!

I went to some bar and grill, don't remember the name, but it sold texmex and gave us chips and salsa. We asked for some queso and the waitress gave us a funny look and says "Oh, you mean cheese sauce"

Which I mean... Yeah kinda. I guess. I'd never thought of it like that.

She returned with a bowl of strait up melted velveeta.

That's when Wisconsin made the list.

#18

makare

so an idiot waitress ruined an entire state for you?

#19

I live in California. Even people who have never taken Spanish lessons or spoken with a native Spanish speaker know that it means "cheese." So much Spanish has become commonplace around here it's hard not to pick up the basics.

Dern tootin! When the choice for sausage is Johnsonville or Kewaskum (which is a town north of here with less than 10,000 people), I'll take Kewaskum any day.

You got served velveeta in the land where the hills run rich with cheese.

They were sending you a message.

makare

my question is did they have queso on the menu?

if it didn't say they had it then asking for it probably made as much sense as asking for agua.

If it was a Tex-Mex restaurant it should have had chili con queso on the menu. It has no business calling itself Tex-Mex if it doesn't.

LISTEN

I don't quite remember exactly what kind of place this was. This was like 4 years ago.

They gave us chips and salsa. Like instead of complimentary bread, they gave us complimentary chips and salsa. We were like, "say dawg, can a guy get some queso up in this bitch?" and they were like "sure, but we call it cheese sauce and it's terrible" and then my brother paid me a dollar to eat a spoon full.

Like if they took what they had, added some milk and mixed in some salsa it would have at least been something else.

I totally thought it was short hand for "fuck you, gringo"

Man... all those innocent waiters.

When I hear queso i think cheese in general, but I also think quesadilla, because that is something I semi frequently make. Sadly a little less now that I am on 'eating better diet'.
