Rate Romero's Romps

#1

Philosopher B.

His zombie romps, specifically.

I was just thinking the other day about why Diary of the Dead bugged me. One of the things included my inability to believe it was actual documentary footage (something Paranormal Activity got a bit closer to in my opinion), and the other ... well, to be perfectly frank, I don't really remember much of what went on in DotD. Something about a hospital, and a panic room. Honestly, I think the worst offense of Diary was ultimately just being forgettable.

Here's how I would rate the Romero zombie flicks:

1) Dawn of the Dead (while the grey makeup looks silly, this had the best intentional themes and allegory and is in my opinion the most badass movie where dialogue, action and sets are concerned)

2) Land of the Dead (I know a lot of people dumped on this one, but I found it surprisingly enjoyable)

3) Night of the Living Dead (this is a classic ... some of the acting, specifically the blonde woman, isn't to my liking, but the situation and the ending can't be topped)

4) Day of the Dead (this one just feels ... weird to me, as though it did some things right, but some things not quite right)

5) Diary of the Dead (er, yeah)

Honestly, while I hope his next one will be rad (though who knows when it's getting released), the trailers don't do a whole lot for me.

So anyway, yeah, just curious to see how other people rate 'em.

Honestly Night and Dawn are tied for me. Classics and perfect in their own way but drastically different. I don't really give a damn about any of the other ones.

I think Night and Dawn are definitely his most important films, in terms of giving birth to the modern zombie movie and pointing it in the right direction.

Sure, they are important but they are also great FILMS. Land was a rather generic action/horror flick (IMO) and Day was... uh... it was something.

I'm of the opinion that Day was the best one.

I liked Diary. I thought it got back to what made Night scary.

I actually liked his remake of Night of the Living Dead. It was done with better actors, better special effects, and I really liked the change he made in the ending. Most horror purists hate it, but I thought it was, in many ways, a superior film to the original.

See? No point trying to get a direct answer out of anyone on this forum.

For me:

Night (The original, can't beat it, seen it so many damn times and love it every time.
Day (Loved the political dialogue that was never really explored again till 28 series)
Dawn (Mall + Zombies = Awesome)
Diary (I'm not one of those anti-shaky cam people)
Land (It has to be on the list so there you go)

I think they pretty much go in order of when they were released. Except for Land and Diary. Those can be tied for last.

I've only seen "Night" and it was a great film.

I'm with Espy. Night and Dawn are some of my favorite movies period. Just couldn't get into the others so much.
